Time for a thought provoking question!!Β
What do you look for in a doll?
In other words, what qualities are you looking for in a doll before you are willing to part with your hard earned money for her? Is it her face? Her size? The way she can move? The price? The quality? Or something all together different?Β
There is no right answer – and that is the BEST part. The answer is different for everyone. But, I am curious, what is it you like?
That’s a touch question!
For 18″ dolls like AG (and H4H, though they’re smaller) I look at their face and hair. I like expressive, sweet faces that have lots of character and nice, style-able hair.
For fashion dolls, in addition to the face and hair, I look for another major factor: articulation (poseability). I LOVE fashion dolls that can strike all sorts of cool poses, which is one reason I like Ellowyne, Monster High, and Liv (I miss Liv!).
I also like dolls that are unique and/or diverse, which is one reason I love H4H. Monster High is definitely unique as well, and one reason I was drawn to Ellowyne was her quirky character in addition to her lovely face.
I love 18″ dolls, mostly AG dolls. I think they are good quality and have a good proportions. I love to play with there hair and also a lot of companies make 18″ inch doll stuff o it is easy to get cheep things for them. I really just like how the clothes and such are not to big but not so small and cheep and plastic clothes. That is kind of what i look for in a doll π
what i look for in a doll is me seeing it and being like i love this doll
i like dolls resembleing me like saige likes art i like art to and i <3 fashion dolls so i love them.
What do I look for in a doll?
Well, I usually go for a doll that has personality traits similar to mine. I don’t really focus on looks, I just go for whoever is my favorite character or which one I can relate to the most.
Although, that is not always the case. I do like variety, so sometimes I will go for a doll that is completely different from me (looks and personality wise). π
i look for: good quaility hair, pretty eyes, and of course a BEAUTIFUL face mold!!!!!
I look for cuteness, good hair, nice facemolds. Articulation doesn’t really matter to me, just as long as the doll can move somewhere!
Aside from good quality, nice hair and eyes, that certain x-factor: The doll must “speak” to me somehow. AG seems to be “right on” when it comes to that!
The face really sells me but if they come with cool stories, double points. It also doesn’t matter if they’re new or used and I like dolls based off of licensced characters like Madame Alexander’s Wizard of Oz collection. Also if they’re good quality overall, then their price doesn’t matter(preferably under $200).
The doll has to draw me in, something about it had to grab my attention. It doesn’t matter if its the hair, the outfit, or the size it just has to get my attention. As for AG dolls I collect all the historicals because I love history. The Ellowynes its all about the face, and I really like the ones with rooted hair. I just go for whatever speaks to me.
What I look for in a doll is the way they look, the way their personality is to me, and also the playablity of the doll. Does it look like I could come up a great adventure for her? Would she look good in a photo? How would I be able to dress and style her? That’s what I look for. And loveableness.
I like all kinds of dolls! But I love AG dolls the most because of their size and I love the historical clothing. Good hair for hair play is important too!
I agree with tony. Historcal outfits with cute hair is a must!
@Jazzie- me too.
i look for dolls that look realistic
For me, the doll has to speak to me through facial expression. I guess that makes me a face person. But, I will not purchase a doll with hair that doesn’t cut the mustard either…so that makes me a hair person–ha ha! I love clothes, but, I would buy a nude doll and buy seamtress made clothing for her because it is all about the doll.
@Tony- I definitely agree with you on that because I style my dolls’ hair constantly.
I am easy going. I collect all sorts of dolls, but I get the most buzz out of 16-20 inch dolls. I look for a feature which my collection doesnt have, for example, my Kate (Saige), looks a lot like my Journey Girl Kelsey, but I don’t have a doll with freckles, and she has the exact hair as me and the same personality. So I got her based on those reasons. I don’t like limiting myself to one doll type, because that’s boring! I have Collector Barbies, Monster Highs, Laa Dee Das, Novi Stars, Brave Dolls, Liv Dolls, Bratz, Only Hearts Club, Barbie Skipper, Stacey and Kelly dolls, Rag dolls, Amerian Girl, Australian Girl and Journey Girls in my collection. Say you can’t afford an American Girl doll, you can always collect some of the least expensive ones as a time filler.
I think the big trick is the diversity and the way the doll is marketed. Also, the ones with high reviews always suck me in.
Do any of you out there own Ivy (ag)? I am thinking about asking for her for my birthday will you share what you think of her?
I look for good qualitie and uniqness in a doll .
Cuteness and prettiness.
I look for great quality, great doll brands, and whether or not I have a doll like it in my collection. Most of the time, I look for American Girl dolls because they are good quality and worth buying. I prefer dolls that are well made and not covered in plastic like Barbies. Even though American Girl dolls are expensive, they are worth the price and that is what I look for in a doll.
Since i make my dolls, I can’t really answer this well, but I won’t make a doll if I don’t like the face.
I look for diversity in a doll. When I see a doll i like from another company, instead of getting a doll from a company that sells dolls i already have, I will get a doll from another company. (I like to see diversity in my collection.) I also looks for dolls that look like me! There is not a lot of dolls that look like me. ( I have brown eyes, dark brown hair that is straight and has bangs). Myag doll Yvette looks like me, I saw an ellowyne doll that looks like me( i don’t have an ellowyne doll) so that doll is perfect. Have to get her. π
I also look at the quality.

Elly – try sending it again – we had maxed out our space on the server. I have fixed it now and everyone should be able to send me email again.
I normally look at the doll line, then the characters and narrow down to the ones I like.
I normally look at the combination of colors on the doll and the hair length. I also look at the face mold and if necessary, the articulation. Sometimes the background and concept help(or not) me choose my doll. I like Julie because I have a similar life story to her.
Tough question. I look at the face and question the doll’s beauty and after I stop playing with her, how will she look among my other dolls on my shelf? With American Girl, when I picked mine out I looked at the clothes but now I look at the ease of their hair care and do consider their personalities…even though it’s not a big deal for me. With Monster High I look at their overall look AND most definitely their characters because it helps me design clothes for them. As for my latest desire, La Dee Da’s, I am looking mainly at the hair and makeup since that is what is prominent on them.
I love ag so what I look for in a doll is a doll who’s story I like is cute and one that doesn’t look like a doll I have ( like I have saige and then getting felicity ) also a doll whose haire I won’t have to spend hours and hours doing because I play piano and violin and do tennis plus school so the doll can’t be like. Kaya or josafina

It really depend, I like doolls that are bendable. I historicals and goty or any charcter doll if have to like that story in other dolls it’s price how they move how they look and what their meet outfit is
I like 18 inch dolls.I love them with strait hair so you can style them you’r own way.
I LOVE MONSTER HIGH DOLLS Its just something with there style it is so cool.I alsow likethewm in there own way how they each have diffrent personalittys and voices and looks its like be uniqe be yourself be a monsteer thank for listing its nice to see and tell our opinion
I look for the face especially the eyes and then the hair and then the articulation… I know I’m going to be bashed here.. but hte AG dolls eyes are not realistic looking.. I love the eyes to look so real you are drawn into them… I also believe that the joy of dolls is making your own personality for them.
I look for dolls with interesting faces through which the “doll’s personality” can be seen. I don’t like too broad smiles or definite face mimic, or, on the other hand, bland face expressions. My favourite size is 14″-16″, because I can easily pack them into my bag and go outside to take photos. And the doll must stand well on her own and pose nicely for the pictures. And I appreciate articulated arms and legs and the head that can be tilted. At the moment my favourite doll lines are Hearts for Hearts girls and A Girl for All Time. They are closest to my ideal doll.
I judge dolls by looks sometimes, story others. For example,I like Monster High Rochelle (still don’t have her though :-/ ) because of her cute large eyes and other things about her looks, but I want AG Emily because I love her personality (well,I like her in her book anyway, haven’t read Happy Birthday Molly yet).
I ordered Maru yesterday! I love her collection, i am also going to say, I love 20inch dolls too.
I look for a doll who has certain traits like mine, such as hair, face, and eyes. I also looks at their face, I’m big on those adorable looking dolls with the face you just want to sit there saying “awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww” all day!
i prefer the ag/maplelea dolls because unlike the spring field doll they are made of better quality and are more durable than most barbies
i really like ag dolls because they smile and have cute little pets! π
