Tips for Curling Your Dolls Hair

One of our readers, AGOverseasFan, always submits beautiful photos to our reader photo events and one of the questions she gets asked most is “how do you curl your doll’s hair to it looks so good?” She did a YouTube tutorial to show you how she does it.

I recommend using the Fabric Softener Spray in addition to her technique. I used the spray plus just the wrapping of the curls on our Nicki who was in dire need of hair help and she turned out perfect!

Nicki’s ponytails look like new now and Natalie’s MyAG (#21) doll, Alex has much cuter ponytails now too. I just love how shiny their hair is again!

  15. Anastasia says:

I’ve watched this video on her page before. I’m glad more people will see it now, because it really helped with Alison’s (Lanie’s) hair.

  16. Char says:

Maggie – you can still do the curl technique by spritzing your doll’s hair with water. The fabric softener just makes it softer.

  17. Maggie says:

Oh, thanks, Char! I just couldn’t wait to curl my doll’s hair!!!!!! :) My Kanani doll will be happy she got her curls back!!!!!!! :)

oh thank you so much for posting this! my Lanie hardly had any curls, it was just a frizzy, tangled, and ugly mess! i did what you and agoverseasfan did, added my own little touch to it, and it was PERFECT! thanks you so much! Lanie looks better than when she arrived! thank you so much! i really love how doll diaries shares so many great things.

  21. Hayley says:

Omg thanks so much and I’m gonna use this once
I get rollers for lanies hair because her hair is straight and I’m gonna boil water and once the curlers r in I’m gonna pour the water over the curlers leave them In to dry and once I take the curlers out I’m gonna fix them with this video :) and use the fabric softener :)

  22. Chloe says:

Megan- I think because she doesn’t have curly hair.

  23. Hayley says:

Maggie – I know I need to wait to get fabric softener :/

  24. Megan says:

Hayley~ um are you going to pour the water on curlers while there in your dolls hair? if you are then um i wouldn’t because that might ruen your dolls hair……………

  25. Megan says:

Chloe~ when i got samantha on christmas of 2010 she had curly hair! :/

  26. Char says:

Megan – you can actually do that – it is called a boil perm and I have done it successfully on our dolls before. I dunked just the curler part in the hot water for 30 seconds then let it dry for a few days.

  27. cecille says:

I love this my lanie and rebecca look much better thanks

  28. Hayley says:

Megan -yeah I am :D it’s to restore her curls because I straighten her hair and my friend did that to her lanies hair and to restore the shine I’m gonna use the downy softener spray :D

  29. gymnast4life says:

my kanani doll’s hair is sooo tangled and frizzy i can’t play or brush it at ALL!!! does anybody have any tips for me to fix that problem? thanks!

  30. Char says:

gymnast4life – put a little Downy fabric softener in a spray bottle full of water and spray Kanani’s hair. Then section by section, spray it, comb it out and re-curl it with your fingers. It may take some patience but it can be done.

  31. elise says:

I just have to use this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My doll Briana’s hair is so frizzy… I want her curls back! ( Briana is the AG doll with hazel eyes, medium skin, and brown curly hair)

  32. Maggie says:

Char and gymnast4life-That’s what me and my sister used, and the hair became way smoother! You should really try it, Gymnast4life! ;) ;)

  33. Sarah says:

All her video’s/ idea’s are the best!

  34. Anna-Marie says:

Will this work for dolls that have straight hair? Because I really want to try curling my Springfield doll McKenna’s hair sometime.

  35. aglover says:

no annna marie it does not. but char how can we curl straight hair dolls

  36. Char says:

aglover – you can try to curl straight hair by wetting it first and rolling it in doll hair rollers. Make sure you let it dry for a day or two before you take the rollers out.

  37. Thanks Char for posting this and for the extra tips.So glad everyone is trying it :)

  38. Allie says:

Awesome! Where do you get the fabric softener spray!?!?

  39. Char says:

Allie – you mix 2 tablespoons of liquid fabric softener like Downy in a spray bottle of water. You can buy Downy at any grocery store.

  40. aglover says:

char where do i get doll hair rollers?

  41. Char says:

American Girl sells them but I got ours at Walgreens. Just find the smallest perm rod rollers you can find at your local dollar store, Target, or similar store.

  42. Mara says:
