The American Girl company started in 1986 with the historical trio of Kirsten, Samantha and Molly. In 1995 they introduced the first “Girls of Today” – 18″ dolls that were meant as contemporary friends for girls ages 8-12.
Madelon sent in photos of two early Girl of Today items for today’s Throwback Thursday.
The American Girl jacket came out in 1995 and is like a Letterman Style jacket. The sleeves are black and the body is purple.
On the back of the jacket is the original Girl of Today logo embroidered into it. It came with a matching cap and was discontinued in 2001.
Kit is wearing the 10th Anniversary American Girl shirt that came out in 1996 – the 10th anniversary of American Girl. It was part of a matching set that included a girl sized shirt, too.
I think it is fantastic that some of these early outfits are still around and being worn by the American Girl dolls today.
Thanks Madelon for sending these in and thanks Kit for being such a gracious model!

I have the jacket in a girl’s size XL. I’ll be listing it on eBay if anyone is interested in buying it. It’s a 14-16 I believe. It’s in great condition too.

Cute saying on the shirt . American girl is having a sale 70% off they have outfits for $17 dollars its much better than $34 if anyone wanted to know. Kit looks good in anything
Cute! I like the jacket!
I want to get another american girl doll. I have Mia, Nellie, Chrissa, Kanani, McKenna, and #33(I LOVE her!) I am trying to decide which doll to get.
#46, #47, or #49.
If I get #49 she will be Chrissa’s twin and I will change Chrissa’s story and Create #49′s story to be they moved from Athens, Greece and #49 would be Athena. They would be adopted from Greece. #46 or #47 I don’t know what their story would be. Does #47 have textured hair? If you have these dolls please tell me how they are, and anyone please answer!
Emma: Hmmm, that jacket sounds GREAT. It would be perfect to wear in the winter.
My neighbor gave me her old ag stuff and that jacket looks super cute on my dolls.
I have the proud to be an American Girl shirt in the girls size. I wore it so much when I was little that my mom had to hide it so I would wear other clothes.
I’m proud to be an American Girl lover. My friends even persuade me to add to my collection
