Well, she’s not African American, but she does look kind of cute. But I’ll let January come and then see her in doll form and all that good stuff before I decide to get her. Sometimes whenever a new doll comes out people (me included) get very excited and want the doll immediately. But after a few months, the excitement dies down and not many people want her anymore. This is also why people don’t get their hopes up too high. (I’m not trying to be mean and I’m sorry if I am) So many people thought that Lanie would be AA but it turns out not so many people are disappointed.
I’m disapointed, but I’ve been saying it since we found out the author. Don’t get your hopes too high.
To be honest, I kinda expected AG to give us a white girl. If you look at historial reviews, Ivy, Josefina, Kaya, and Addy (AKA: the girls of color) are much less often reviewed then the white girls. Its good marketing for them to have a white girl.

I’ll have to wait to see the doll before I decide wether or not to buy her though. When I saw the gwen in previews for the movie, I was certain that I would buy her jan.1. But when I saw the doll, I’m like, “oh well. i don’t need her, do I?”
Hey guys, I haven’t been on in a really long time. Ok, so Lanie’s obviously the doll. Do we know anything else about her?
We know she’s close to her aunt and likes gardening. That’s about it. I have heard unconfirmed rumors of a bike and a bunny.
On another note, my cousin seems to have lied. Its not the first time she lied to me, and she knows I frequent doll sites such as this, so thats not very surprising. But she will get my “disapointed in you” look.

I’m thinking green too. Possibly hazel. I took that picture into Microsoft Paint and took a sample from her eye. The eyes are only 4 pixels, but the are a dark green shade.

It looks more like a side part and the longer hair just falls like that when its tucked behind the ear.
I like Lanie’s book cover much better than Chrissa’s. Lanie is so, so cute and I can’t wait till we get to see the doll!

wow! i like her i am not going to get her when she first comes out cause i am getting 1 or 2 dolls for christmas but i think ill get her for my birthday. hopefully she does not have any other dolls with her cause that is just to much money to have to spend to get chrissa’s collection. but thankfully my sister is buying me sonali for christmas so i will have all the 2009 dolls.
I think that she will probably have blue eyes I saved the picture got on paint made it bigger and zoomed in and they looked pretty blue, also they made all of the letters in blue, her headband is blue and she has blue stripes on her shirt, it could be green but I think their probably blue. I think that her hair will just be long and parted to the side, curly like nicki’s and the straight eyebrows.
I’m going to wait till I can see the doll to desied if I want to get her or not but knowing me I’ll most likely get her.

I did the same thing as Lena with the eyes, only I used photoshop. I’m getting green and some brown. I think she’ll have the new green eyes or hazel, but most likely the new green eyes.
I was hoping for an AA girl as well, but I only have 2 dolls with green eyes (Felicity and Mia), so she might make her way into my collection if she has green eyes. I’m also planning a custom that I wouldn’t have to do if she had green eyes. Either way, she’s cute. I can’t wait to see what else her collection and story include.

Well, Lanie isn’t African American or another nationality or whatever-you-call-it, but she is BEAUTIFUL. She looks unique, a feature I value in dolls, (if you look at all the dolls I own, the 9 out of the 10 dolls I have are “unique” and not just really plain.) I will think about her. She is VERY pretty. Love the curlies! Her outfit seems cute too, and not one of a girly-girl. Her hair makes her seem that way, but I hope she’s cute-sporty!

I am disappointed that AG had to make another blond doll, though she might be cute, so I won’t complain. I can’t wait to see the doll, because sometimes the book covers look nothing like the actual doll, if you know what I mean. I think AG could sell the soon-to-be three forgotten better with some better marketing, so I don’t buy that they couldn’t have pulled off a successful AA doll, though it probably is easier for them to release another blond – they already know that they sell well and I guess they didn’t want to take any chances. I really like her hair and the fact that she doesn’t look like she will dress as girly as some of the others before her. She looks like she will wear what kids today wear, and I am excited about that.
Now that I look at her, she reminds me exactly how my character in our School Play, Brittany, would look LOL!

Hi, Sara! I’ve been really busy applying to medical school and studying hard for the graduate level courses I’m already taking. I graduate in May though! I can’t wait to hang the college diploma on my wall!

My cousin said Lanie may be a girl of color. I’ve though about it, and maybe there were some prototypes of color. She couldn’t say much on the subject anyway.

Here’s a hint Beth: type in GOTY 20?? (name) (what you are looking for). Be willing to go through many pages. I think I went through about 50 before I found her book summaries.
I am a bit disappointed that AG did not make an AA doll. But I am more disappointed that AG did not try to diverse the type of doll. If you look at the pattern of GOTYs (with the exception of BFdolls and Marisol) AG has created a blond hair blue eyes doll mold and then a brown hair, brown eyes mold. I think that AG needs to be more creative in their doll molds and types. I would love to see an AA GOTY as well as any caucasian type of doll with different types of skin tones, eye color and hair types (curly, highlights, straight, bangs, wavy.)
She is cute though, despite the lack of creativity on AG’s part.
Jess was also half Japanese and had her own special mold.
She’s really adorable! I’m surprised that AG didn’t make an AA doll, though, becasue this has been a special year= first AA president, first AA disney princess. It would’ve been cool to have the first AA today doll as well. Oh, well, storyline should come first and I hope hers is awesome!
I think Lanie is creative enough. You know who wasn’t? Chrissa. I think this is a big improvement. But like I said earlier, at least she doesn’t have blue eyes!
Face molds aren’t really American Girl’s specialty. It costs a ton of money to produce new ones. I like My Twinn and AG for opposite reasons. My Twinn has good faces/customization options while AG has wonderful stories and outfits.
I think it’s possible AG avoided a black GOTY doll because of our new president. Even though it would’ve been untrue, people would say AG is kissing up, etc.

I’ve been swamped because finals are next week. Each night this week, I got no more than 5.5 hours of sleep because of multiple tests and quizzes everyday. Crystal light energy helped me out, but I’m about to keel over from exhaustion. I wanna sleep!!!

I agree with Lily, I didn’t think that Chrissa was very creative, it is sad that AG didn’t make an AA doll, but I can’t deny it, Lanie is pretty cute. It looks to me like she has either blue or green eyes. The thing is with AG, they make so many blond hair, brown eyed dolls, when in real life, it is very rare to have brown eyes and blond hair, same thing with blue eyes and black hair. I mean, think about it, how many people have you ever met with brown eyes and blond hair or blue eye and black hair, it just doesn’t happen that often, although it is very pretty. I’m considering the thought of getting Lanie, although I would re-name her something like Leah or Leila. I think I look a lot like her.

I remember hte days when I read the old historical character books and wished that I was as old as them (at least their ages in the books….I could never be exactly as old they are since I’d have to be dead two hundred years to achieve that)…now I’m almost half a decade older than them. Crazy!

My family all has black hair and hazel blue eyes (blue grey) but I agree it is pretty rare.

I don’t have children, and I help take care of my little nieces and nephews (3, 6, and 9) so they keep me feeling young… until I take someone’s prescription and they are an adult and I ask their birthday and they say 1989- the year I graduated high school- and I realize that I could be the mother of a 19 year old. A grandmother, even! More white hairs of shock sprout up.
Then I go to visit my nieces and nephews, and I feel young again

^^Keanna, that’s just what I was thinking, LOL. She’d make a good Luna, except it looks like her eyes are green or brown or both. Luna had gray and blue in the book and movie.
I don’t know, I’ve never used it. But it looks like a system where they bill you next month instead of this month (example), so that if you don’t have the money this month and you’ll get it next month you can still have the doll or whatever now.
Wow, Chrissa and her friends would have been the last GOTY’s to be born in the ’90’s. Mia would have been born in the same year as my brother and Marisol and I would have had the same b-day year (she was 2004, right?).
I am older but, like Lily, am too young to have a real job (half a year away) or get my license (1.5 long years away, because of where I live).
My parents look old next to Julie and Ivy, too. My mom would have been 16 in 1976 and my dad would have been 22!
And I haven’t been on here in a while because of school, too. Finals are coming up fast – next week!

True, there are a ton of African-American girls in the US. That’s why American Girl offers so many African-American girl dolls and Addy. I’m not trying to do racial profiling, but the majority of girls who are in American Girl’s target socio-economic group would identify more with a fair skinned, blond doll. American Girl has a marketing department to decide what will sell well, and that’s how they decided on Lanie.
Ashleigh, I agree that just because Lanie is white doesn’t mean she’s un-original. What makes her original is her hair and outfit, which are what 10 year-olds today would wear. Chrissa is the exact opposite.
Anne, finals are next week for me too and I’ve been going to bed close to 1 AM everyday this week. That stinks that you can’t drive until you’re 17.
Actually, Chrissa’s outfit was close to what girls in 2009 were wearing. 40 year old girls. My mom bought a bunch of dresses with flowery 70’s patterns.

I’m 11 and in the 5th grade, and I do sometimes wear dresses and skirts to school usually with leggings underneath and they are very fashionable and nice anD nowadays-looking.
It actually does look cute…. with jeans and a turtle neck under it, and a headband. So basically not what was in Chrissa’s collection.
I actually loved Chrissa’s dress. I got her and Sonali sometime in october and its very pretty.

I wear dresses all the time and so does my sister, my mom says I’m a tomboy compared to her, but we have worn dresses a lot for our whole lives so it is not unusual. What I’m saying is that we don’t wear dresses for just special occasions.
I don’t think anyone said it, but I do agree with Lani on it being a polo dress. I think that blonde wore one in High School Musical.
I do wear skirts w/ leggings when I go out most of the time. Occasionally I will wear pants, and I’m somewhere between a tomboy and a girly girl. I like rock and know how to skate and defend myself, but I also do ballet and like frilly things.
I think it’s a polo dress too. Dresses are cheaper to produce than jeans, shirt, etc. I cannot wait to see her in doll form!!!
I wish Chrissa would’ve come with the turtleneck like in her movie. Her meet outfit was just too plain without it.

Gardening stuff. And a fully functional garden. No? Fine. Just gardening stuff will make me happy.
There are two things I dislike about archivals . . .
1. Resellers buy up all of the stock before everyone else can get what they want
2. people on here go crazy about being mad, internet petitions, “they can’t do this!”
It gets old. On the bright side, I bought Kirsten’s school outfit ($35) and red boots ($10) this week. That’s still expensive, but cheaper than eBay.
I just hope that her entire collection won’t revolve around gardening. That would be a little boring. But I’m sure AG will throw in some fun outfits and furniture sets.
Waiting is awful right now. Waiting for exam week. Waiting for Lanie. Waiting for Driver’s ed.
I really like her, even though I look nothing like her AT ALL.
I did want to say something about the ethnicity “problem” though. First off, let me just say, we’re all one race anyway, so the only real difference between us is the amount of pigment in our skin. Some have more melanin, some have less. I feel that sometimes we, as an American people, in general try SO hard sometimes to make sure that there is a “white” kid, an “AA” kid, an “Asian” kid, a “Native American” kid, and a “Hispanic” that we forget that there are THOUSANDS of people who are a mixture of a lot of different countrys and cultures, and oftentimes they aren’t “represented”. And we are all, regardless of cultural background, Americans, we shouldn’t have to refer to ourselves as “African American” or “German Americans” or “Turkish” or “Armenian” Americans, we are all Americans, we are a melting pot! It seems to me that sometimes we over-represent the minorities. Don’t get me wrong, I mean this in the utmost respectful way, I myself have a tiny bit of Native American heratige, but have mostly a German/Irish/Bohemian/Russian/French/Polish background, but I have often been mistaken for Hispanic or a full blood Indian. I would never wish to hurt someone else’s feelings on this subject. Just read over what I’ve written and think about it.
Quite frankly, I don’t care what the color of your skin is, whether you be doll or human, in fact you could have purple skin with green polk-a-dots, and I wouldn’t care a bit. If you and I have things in common, if we like similar activities or have like-minded goals then we will be friends, not because I have to have a “Caucasion” friend, an “AA” friend and so on….
Anyway, that’s my two cents….

Savannah, I agree. There is no telling what mix of French, Scots-Irish, Cherokee, Eastern European mix I am because it does not matter. I’m an American.
I agree that there is too much emphasis on race and culture in this country. People try so hard to seperate themselves. If you’re a citizen of this country, you’re an American. End of story.
That is why I am not disappointed in the least by Lanie. She’s cute and that’s all that matters. I’m not going to go after American Girl for anything. They’re diverse enough. Just look at Josefina, Kaya, Addy, Marisol, Jess, Ivy, and the plethora of JLY dolls.
Lily & Savannah, the thing is that we get the whole “American” thing, but little girls who are actually in the target group want to feel special by having a doll that looks just like them and has her own special story.
I love Lanie’s looks so far, and I’m happy with it. I just wish there was more diversity in the GOTY line. Because 3 out of 9 does not equal a representation of Americans. But…. here’s looking forward to ‘11.
I think it would be interesting if AG decided to sell seeds with Lanie’s gardening stuff (assuming she’ll have gardening accessories, which she most likely will). Also, they could have a set just for girls like small tools, dirt, flower pots, and seeds so they could grow their own things. That would be cool!
I am not a girly-girl at all. And I can’t remember when the last time I wore a dress/skirt was.
Not that wearing dresses/skirts makes a girl “girly” but I’m just saying.

I hate to bust your bubble, but that’s pretty close to 6 out of 9, or 66.7%. Unequal racial representation, aye?

That doesn’t change the fact that little girls want dolls that look like them and have a story they can relate to.
I understand both of you Lily and Lena. I know many girls would like to get dolls that look like themselves, but not all of them. I have 3 18′ dolls and one blond, one’s got black (almost black) hair (she looks vagugly like me, sort of, she’s more pretty!
) and a brown headed curly haired one.
I think as sad as it is to say, this was a purely commercial move. I too would love more variety in the dolls, but just don’t make such a big deal about the whole “let’s have everything perfectly fair”. ‘Cause like my Momma always says, “Life is not fair.”

There’s Addy and then all of those just like you dolls. African Americans are 12% of the population and even a lesser percentage of AG’s target socio-economic group, so … yeah, it couldn’t hurt to have a black GOTY, but it’s not a big deal.

That’s 7 out of 15 . . . almost half. I’m really wanting Kaya, Josefina, and Addy now. All of my AG dolls are white and I want variety. Come to think of it, all of my dolls are white. Even the 10 My Twinn dolls. Whoa. I think AG should’ve paid more attention to their minority dolls so more people would buy them. As a 10 year old, none of them appealed to me.
I just found Kaya’s fancy shawl outfit for cheap (my favorite AG outfit ever) so I can’t wait for Kaya. And Lanie! And the 2 new historical dolls!

St Lucia is a holiday the begins with the oldest daughter waking the household for breakfast of coffee and buns on the darkest day of the year (December 13 used to be the solstice in the Julian calander), and it begins the a day of merrymaking. The daughter traditionaly dresses as St Lucia in a white gown with a red sash and a wreath of greens and candles on her head. I can’t believe I know this from memory.

I went to see the Nutcracker ballet two years ago. I loved it but my mom hated it and held that over me for a long time. I wish I could dance! I tried on pointe shoes one time and it was fun. They didn’t quite fit and half my feet stuck out, but I enjoyed being on my toes.

I’m doing pointe next year. I take the pink leather slipper ballet now, but since I’m strong enough they’re gonna let me do pointe. You could ask your mom to dance, you know.
I could never find the time for dance and I can’t drive myself yet. Besides, I am just now getting out of a sport that I absolutely hate.
Ice skating and ballet are two sports I would love to do but I know I would be awful at. I’m that uncoordinated. Maybe in college!

i wanted to take ice skating lesson when i was younger but i grew out of it but i never grew out of wanting to take ballet. i have had to take a break on ballet for a year because i was always getting hurt but i hop by the spring to be able to get back in it. i had very strict teachers but they taught me so much and i learned fast that it was a break from reality which i need so badly in high school cause every one wants something from me! i love the nutcracker. i wanted to go this year but we are going to see the Rockettes instead.
I love the Rockettes, but I can’t see them this year. I’ll be in Poland when the show comes here.
You need to know the basics of ballet for pointe (some schools make you do both ballet and pointe) and very strong ankles.
I took ballet lessons when I was two or three but never really liked them, so I quit.

Well, I think Lanie’s awesome! She’s really different to the existing dolls. I have Mia and Rebecca. I admit I was really really really really dissapointed with Chrissa-her clothes are really plain and her face was boring. I did like the movie, but still…Sonali and Gwen were more interesting. My cousin told me about Lanie, except, of course, she though Lanie would be AA…she also told me that Lanie would have a best friend called Bess, who is AA…and apparently the book is all about conserving the planet and global warming and stuff (its about time!). Now I can’t wait until the new historical character comes out!!! It was too bad about Samantha and Nellie going, but I never was a huge fan of Kirsten’s in the first place…

It wasn’t. I think she is a blonde because the historicals that we have gotten proof of aren’t going to be blonde.
I don’t think there will be a new historical. Rebecca was not made to replace Samantha. Rebecca had been brewing for years before Mattel even thought of Samantha’s retirement. However, because of money issues and the recession, making them have to cut down on dolls and make room for more. Samantha and Kirsten’s times are least important in history, and already heavily covered in other American Girl times. So they didn’t have a problem getting rid of er, and creating another brunette in the GOTY, and another Nellie look-alike BF doll (Chrissa and Gwen).

^I’m not sure what you mean because they already do both. Kirsten was born in Sweden, Nellie was born in Ireland, Emily was in the US temporarily from England, Elizabeth was born in England, and Josefina was from New Mexico but before it was part of the US, at that time it was part of Mexico.

yeah i am getting her the day she comes out and i am going to the American girl store in Dallas on January 1 to get her. i have gone to AG Dallas every Jan 1st since they have opened (3 yrs. including the one coming up) i bought Mia the first day and i went to American girl the day Chrissa came out but i had to wait till i went to New York to get her and i will be geting Lanie her first day. i got Nicki the first the American Girl store in Dallas opened November 3, 2007. i cant wait to see all of her collection! even if i don’t like it i will still get it but i know i will love it!

Actually, your comments before really put things into perspective for me.
But take a moment and reflect on what previous historical dolls Best Friends are there for…
Felicity: Elizabeth did have to do with the plot in some parts of the story-with her whole ‘different opinion thing’, and Felicity learns that disagreement is a part of friendship that you can overcome.
Molly: Emily exists because she’s an utterly new doll from a new culture for Molly, and she was created into a doll so little girls had an ‘exotic’ doll from a different country.
Kit: Personally, I think Ruthie was only created because of the movie coming out. She wasn’t a huge influence over Kit’s story plot except that her father was rich and Kit’s father lost his job. other then that, Ruthie didn’t have much to do with the plot.
Samantha: Nellie is the one doll I think had to do with the storyline the most, after all, she brings out the generosity in Samantha and teaches so many lessons…
Julie: Has Ivy, and In my opinion Ivy was just there so more money could be made off Julie’s collection. Julie was a huge hit-her long hair and her more modern clothing…
So, I think that every year Mattel, or whoever makes these dolls add a little extra to these GOTY dolls. Chrissa’s story was probably molded around the idea that best friends should begin to be included with GOTY dolls. More money can be made that way. And if you look at the summaries Lani provided us with, you can see that this girl, Lanie’s best friend, has influenced Lanie by kindling a jelousy: Lanie wants to go on adventures too…which has to be important as it clearly sets Lanie rocketing off into the natural world.
You don’t have to believe me-I am probably wrong anyway, that’s just my opinion on the entire matter. the historical best friends didn’t have as much to do with the plot either, but that didn’t stop them from making them.
And by the way-no, Kirsten isn’t all sold out yet, not completely
I’m also surprised that Chrissa is sold out and Sonali and Gwen aren’t.
Out of the three of them Sonali has sold many more dolls then Chrissa and Gwen have, after Sonali is Chrissa and she sold mostly on the first few days of her release and the last few days of her availability. Gwen sold the least out of all of them, but she was more popular at the beginning then Sonali was. I think that the whole ‘homeless’ issue really brought her down a notch…that’s too bad, ’cause out of all of them I think she was the prettiest.

I don’t think any GOTY except Lindsey had a specified religion. They tend to shy away from that with GOTYs so that parents don’t get upset about the doll being a certain religion.
