SCOOP! American Girl GOTY 2010 Information

UPDATE!

I finally tracked down the cover of the book (thanks to a super amazing reader) for Lanie, the American Girl of the Year (GOTY) for 2010, and we know the storylines from her books.

Thanks to a sleuthy reader (Sitara) for sending me the following information.

It looks like the American Girl Girl of the Year 2010 may be African American. The books show up on Amazon without any titles, but the author is listed as Jane Kurtz.

Girl of the Year 2010, Book 1 (American Girl Today)

Girl of the Year 2010, Book 2: Girl of the Year 2010′s Real Adventures (American Girl Today)

Jane Kurtz grew up in eastern Ethiopia and writes for children based on her experiences growing up in Africa. She is also the author of:

Saba: Under the Hyena’s Foot (Girls of Many Lands)

Fire on the Mountain (Aladdin Picture Books)

The Storyteller’s Beads

Based on the fact that we have not had an African American Girl of the Year, we have an African American president who has daughters in the target age for American Girl and the books that Jane Kurtz has already authored, I would put my guesses on an African American GOTY with an interesting story!

  1. Lily says:

The name “Iseult” reminds me of the movie Tristan + Isolde. That’s because Isolde and Iseult are variations of the same name. That movie was so good but so sad . . . I wish it could’ve had a happy ending.

Anyway, Iseult is an excellent name choice, Pioneerfan! I’m trying to come up with the perfect Irish name for a red-headed, green-eyed My Twinn doll that I will be buying for Christmas. I will be making many medievel gowns for her if I can make a nice pattern.

  2. Lena says:

I like Iseult. It sounds pretty.

I recently met a girl names Myfanwy, I’m thinking I’ll name a future doll that. Its a very pretty name.

  3. Lily says:

Ah, so I guess you realized that everyone would be out of town and my stuff would sell for peanuts . . . nice try! :)

Lena summed up high school pretty well. Case and point, it’s awful! But don’t let that discourage you because you might as well go into it with a good attitude if you’re going to be stuck there for four years of your life!

  4. Lily says:

If I wasn’t still banned from buying on eBay, I would go bargain hunting next weekend! Nah, I’ll sew instead with the $60 worth of stuff I bought from the bargain bin at Hobby Lobby. Too bad all of the fabrics have flowers on them . . . well, that’s why they were in the bargain bin.

  5. Lena says:

A my friends older brother said sophomore year’s the best. I kinda agree, freshmen are still scared, juniors worry about SATs, and seniors college.

  6. Lily says:

I’ve heard that sophomore year is the best and junior year is the worst. I personally think that senior year will be the best because . . .

    1. no exams 2nd semester (for my school)
    2. three exam exemptions 1st semester
    3. almost done with HS!!!
    4. no more SAT/ACT junk
    5. don’t have to take as many classes because you have most of your credits
    6. early admissions into college = low stress after that
    7. early release/late arrival aat school

  7. Lily says:

Yeah, I think I will be listing my stuff the week after Labor Day instead. I don’t want to have a holiday weekend taking up three days of my auction durations. Bad stuff.

  8. chrysanthamum says:

i sold the rest of my stuff whcih was just some gameboy color games and a digital toy thing. 16!
i have to take my SAT in oct. im taking a prep class for it.

  9. chrysanthamum says:

a while back my cousin got married and the bride had the prettiest dress on i ever saw. it was white and had like a design near the top and sides and a red sash for the middle that went around her waist and was on the back.
ok, not such a good descripitnon but it was gorgeous. so pretty! i liked the touch of color on the white dress with the red.

  10. chrysanthamum says:

wow. i dont even know how to sew.

  11. Anne says:

Lena, did you/are you taking the SAT’s? With what I’m doing, it doesn’t look like it is necessary for me, which I am happy about. Schools teach how to take tests and not actual information far too often. My aunt, who is Dean of Admissions at St. Lawrence University said schools are leaning away from heavy reliance on SAT scores – she thinks it is because it mostly tells them how much the student was able to be tutored and has little about the intelligence of the student.

Good luck, chrysanthamum. Don’t worry, I can’t really sew, either.

  12. Lena says:

I learned more about school stuff in the last year than I did in real school. Real school was like you said, learning to turn in homeword (nevermind how well its done) and bubbling things in. I have to take SATs to learn I proved something (the district is makeing me), but senior year, I’m home free.

  13. Abby says:

GOOD NEWS! I have enought money for a doll and I’m ordering JLY….. #19! I’m going to name her Gertrude, and she is a guitar player. I’m on this pop strike thing and I get $100 with no pop for six months. I end September 5, but my dad says I can order her early!

  14. Abby says:

The order is placed! YAY!!! 15th doll, here I come!

  15. Taylor says:

That’s awesome Abby!! How long have you been collecting?

  16. Lily says:

Chrysanthamum, what grade are you in . . . ? I remember in junior high there was some program where you could take it early, but you don’t really sound like a high school junior. I get to take the PSAT this year. Not fun!

In other news, I got Kirsten’s dirndl outfit in the mail today (along with another thing or two). For some reason, it is kind of damp wet (in a baggy inside a bubble mailer?) and wrinkled, but nothing a good ironing couldn’t take care of. The fabric is so soft!

  17. sunbeemz says:

    Hi guess what!

  18. Taylor says:

    What?

  19. sunbeemz says:

I got the hippie outfit for my dolls!

  20. Taylor says:

Awesome!!! I love that outfit, I wish they never retired it!!

  21. sunbeemz says:

    I know..

  22. Sara says:

    Wat’re we talking bout?

  23. chrysanthamum says:

im going into my senior year lily

  24. Lily says:

Ohhhh . . . I guess the “chat speak” kind of threw me off. I’m sorry! I was wondering why you picked a name that is so difficult to spell. Silly me!

  25. Lily says:

. . . and I wish I was a senior too. I’m going to get early release that year so I can leave school at 12:45. But again, that’s a good two years away. I have to get through my classes this year then AP US History, Pre-AP Pre Cal, AP English Lang, Pre-AP physics, etc., etc. . . it never ends!

  26. Taylor says:

Wow Lily you have a lot of AP classes.

  27. chrysanthamum says:

i only have a couple honors classes this year. and i i will have one release 2nd semster. thats fine. idk why i picked the name. i guess because it was a flower oh and i think its the title of a young childrens book.

  28. chrysanthamum says:

is my name even spelled right?

  29. chrysanthamum says:

i’m in the 3rd year of German, first year of japanese this year and i already had ASL.

  30. Taylor says:

The only honor class I have is Spanish 3.

  31. Lily says:

I’m not in any of those AP classes yet; that is what I will be taking next year. Right now I’m in 5 advanced classes, including Spanish 3 (like you).

That’s neat that you’re taking German and Japanese. I take Spanish because it’s useful and easy to learn, but I would like to know an interesting language like German, French, or some other language from around there.

  32. Lily says:

BTW, the first paragraph was for Taylor and the 2nd for Chrysanthamum.

  33. Taylor says:

I choose to learn spanish because it is most commonly spoken (compared to the other languages at my school) and German is easy to learn (so far) so I just learn it on my own. And I’m not that interested in French. I might take Japanese in college but idk.

  34. Lily says:

I looked it up and it’s spelled “Chrysanthemum”

I could take AP Spanish Lang and Lit, but why make life harder than it has to be?

  35. Lily says:

Well, I have a ton of HW, so bye! I really wish I could stay longer.

  36. Sara says:

Nite Nite!!!! Soccer game 2morro!! Yay!!!! Wish us luck! We’re facing a very good team!! Yikes!!!!!

  37. Lily says:

Good luck, Sara! :) How do you do that toothy teal emoticon?

  38. chrysanthemum says:

    good luck sara

  39. Sara says:

    thnx!

: mr green : without the spaces.

  40. Lena says:

I called a little bird today… she said new stuff thursday…..but did not give me details :(

  41. Anne says:

New stuff Thursday…cool! I can’t wait to see what they come out with!

  42. Lena says:

She did say new JLY stuff (only hinted at dolls), Rebecca and Julie stuff, but didn’t say what.

  43. ros says:

why dosnt he compny have blond hair brown eye bitty babies or brown hair blue eye or red head or blond hair green eye bitty babies? they should . they have it for the other dolls.

  44. Lena says:

Ros, they just got multi racial dolls last year, you can’t expect everything at once. Wait a little, they’ll likley be other BTs.

  45. Lily says:

Thank you soooooo much for the info Lena! That will give me something to look foward to after my 1st Algebra 2 test of the year!

  46. Lily says:

I am very excited for the new Julie and Rebecca stuff (since I got them a month ago) but in the meantime, I have tons and tons and tons of homework to do. If I want to go to bed before midnight, I better go. Bye!

  47. Anne says:

I spent the day cleaning out my room even more, and just getting ready for school. My brother starts school on the third. I’m surprised about how early he is starting this year (it’s usually the 4-8 for our district) because he got out really late for summer vacation (June 24 or 25 and we usually get out the 21 or the 22). My classes don’t start until September 9 but I also have to start the classes that aren’t formal classes soon. I have started hockey and figure skating (gym), and am starting my online science on the third. I’ll start book group and art the second week of September and book group in late September. I’m not sure what I’m doing abut Spanish, but the class I think I’m taking starts pretty soon. And I have to start violin, like, now.

I remember the days when the only twins available were blond hair and blue eyes. AG has come a long way since then, but they still need to do more, as Ros pointed out.

I am also excited for the new Rebecca stuff. I’m getting her for my birthday in 2011.

  48. Bella says:

Julie is coming out with a kitchen table, 2 new outfits and a bike. they are also coming out with stuff for Chrissa, Rebecca and JLY(4 new dolls!)

  49. Lena says:

Ohh… I got my cataloge today too.

    Rebecca:
    hanukkah set
    purple Hanukkah dress
    Rebecca winter coat
    costume chest,
    a settee
    phonograph

    Julie:
    bike
    fondue set
    kitchen table
    2 outfits

Chrissa gets snow outfit and gear

I don’t care much for JLY, so I’ll leave that to someone else.

  50. Lily says:

I fell asleep while doing that insanely long homework. Oops. Time for a coke zero!

Thanks for the info, everyone! Maybe I should go downstairs and see if there’s a new catalogue . . .
