I am so grateful that I have finally had time to get some sewing done and work through some of the patterns I have had downloaded for over a year now. In my stack of fabric there was a pretty pink and brown flowered print that just called Kanani’s name! I flipped through my patterns and found the Hawaiian Pa’u Hula Outfit Pattern from Liberty Jane Patterns and got started.
This pattern is SUPER easy!! And when I say that, I mean it is the PERFECT pattern for beginners as it consists of sewing 6 straight lines and threading 4 pieces of elastic.
This whole outfit took less than an hour for me to make – and I am sure that when I make another one it will be even quicker. I took a shortcut by cutting the fabric so the bottom hem did not need to be hemmed up – it is the selvedge edge. I did not give the top straps, but the next time I make this I will add the strap – just to help Kanani avoid any embarrassing moments.
Gwen’s sandals work well with this outfit, too! Super cute.
If you are looking for easy patterns to start with, I highly recommend the patterns from Liberty Jane Patterns and if you want to learn the very basics of sewing, Rosie’s Doll Clothes Sewing Course is very thorough and affordable.
Happy Sewing!!

That’s really pretty! and, I think it would be pretty easy to adapt for Carpatina girls, too. Yay for sewing time!

I made the same one for my daughter’s doll. It was a huge hit! http://crafty-lynn.blogspot.com/2012/04/hawaiian-pauu-hula-outfits.html
They look great Lynn! Thanks for sharing the link, too.
Good to be aware of another beginner sewing pattern. I’m in the process of gathering easy patterns for grand #2 who’s expressed an interest in learning to sew for her Elizabeth. We’re giving her a child’s sewing machine next month for her birthday and I wanted to include a number of simple patterns and some materials too. This one will be added. Thanks also to Lynn- I checked out your site and followed a link from there to the easy denim-jean skirt. Kudos to both of you ladies for sewing and blessing the girls in your lives; and sharing with us too!
Granof4 – the sewing machine I used to sew these outfits is a Brother XL 2610. It was reasonably priced and it so easy to use. We were going to get my daughter a child’s sewing machine, but after reading a bunch of reviews, we decided it would be better for her to learn on a real machine and take it with her when she goes off to college.
Yeah, I hear you. My daughter and I have debated pros and cons of child or real machine. I taught her when she was 8 or 9 on my machine (gotten back in ’78 and I’m still using it today) and she did just fine with it. Loves to sew to this day. I worried at first about her hurting herself, but she never did. She prefers to teach her girls on a child’s machine. I will look up the Brother XL you mentioned just out of curiosity. I do appreciate your imput.
I recently went to Oahu and I got a very pretty Hawaiian dress. It came with a head lei and a normal lei. It was only 10 dollars! I found it at the flea market and someone hand-made it, too!
