Pre-Mattel Kirsten American Girl Doll

One of our readers, Stephanie, sent me some pictures of her dolls. I absolutely love the pictures of her Pre-Mattel Kirsten and American Girl Doll of Today #7.

Pre Mattel American Girl Doll Kirsten

Dolls made before 1998 are considered “pre-Mattel” since Pleasant Rowland sold the American Girl Company to Mattel that year.

While Pre-Mattel dolls are hard to find, they are still available regularly on eBay and if you are lucky you may find one at a yard sale or even a thrift store.

Hmm . . . what’s extra goth? Do you drag out the heavy eyeliner?

  2. Lena says:

They do make sense to me. I’d still go with Jules though.

  3. Char says:

Natalie – if you put Chicago in the search box at the top of the page (in the black bar under the header graphic) you can find a list of all the posts I have done about American Girl Place Chicago – complete with plenty of pictures. Its beautiful and I would love to go back and take my girls with me this time.

  4. Lily says:

I try to dress like a little kid when I go, but at 5’8″, I feel out of place no matter what. The place is packed with a bunch of screeching 8 year olds and their parents.

  5. Abby says:

My guess wearing black, blue, and purple.

  6. Lena says:

No, lots of black, and lace. And black lace. And roses. Don’t ask.

  7. Lily says:

I don’t think I’ll be able to get my parents to buy a doll for me. They’re putting the stuff on their credit card, so when they see $425 for all 3 dolls, they’ll go ballistic. They’re already giving me a month’s advance on my birthday money and I don’t want to be in the hole.

  8. Lily says:

Mmm . . . Hot Topic. Say no more. ;)

  9. Abby says:

    Bored….. bored….. BORED!

  10. Lily says:

Besides, $425 is a heck of a lot of money to spend on dolls in one sitting. I couldn’t live with myself.

  11. Lily says:

Does anyone else feel like they’re getting shortchanged with Chrissa’s meet outfit? Compare her with any other historical doll, and her outfit looks way plain.

  12. Lily says:

I still like it, but for $95, it doesn’t seem like a whole lot.

  13. Georgia says:

When I went to see the Little Mermaid on Broadway, I wore Kit’s meet outfit(which i bought in LA) Not realising that there would be people there that would know who I was dressed as. There were lots of kids there going “Mommy look, it’s KIT!” it was funny!

  14. Abby says:

    I’m here! :)

  15. Abby says:

    LOL!

  16. Taelyn says:

chrissas meet outfit is… interesting! i know its suposed to be for like a ten-year-old girl, but i dont see many ten-year-old dressed like THAT. i think that if they really want to make it modern she should be wearing jeans and a baby t with words across the front and come w/ a cell phone lol

  17. Lily says:

    That is funny, Georgia!

One time in Elementary school, we had to dress up as Revolutionary War people, and some girl was wearing Felicity’s meet dress!

  18. Lily says:

Yeah, Chrissa’s outfit doesn’t seem terribly representative of what people wear today, from what I’ve seen, atleast.

  19. Taelyn says:

lol, georgia! i had to work at this art fest thing w/ my mom and there was this girl carrying aorund nicki and i turned to my friend gabriella and said “omigod! it’s NICKI!” and she looked at me like i was crazy (which i am =})

  20. Taelyn says:

we had pajama day at this summer acting camp i went to and a 7th grader wore samantha’s nighty! i have nothing against her, she’s a nice girl, but you could totally see through it!

  21. Abby says:

One time, I was walking out of my classroom to use the bathroom when a second grader came strolling down the hall with the star hoodie.

  22. Abby says:

    I meant “Wearing” the hoodie.

  23. Selena says:

I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing that to.. anywhere!! And I haven’t seen many ppl wearing dresses to school lately, have you?? Actually, maybe they do IDK, how should I know!!! I just know that my bros don’t wear dresses ;)

    *watching Valkrie (??spelling??) *

hehe, that’s funny, I make ppl stare too when I go to AG…

  24. Stephanie says:

    Abby,

My dolls’ hair is a bit frizzy – they could probably both use a “downey dunk,” but I’m kind of afraid to do so. I’ve had Kirsten since 1995 and #7 since about 1996/1997. I do have another doll now, a Felicity, which I got for Christmas 2008. I sent her pics to Char too, but they didn’t get put up.

  25. Lily says:

When I go to AG, I feel like the giant in Jack and the Beanstalk.

  26. Selena says:

really??? even though I’m 5’2 (or 5’3 or somethin’) they are usually tons of ppl taller than me…

    bouna notte!

  27. Anne says:

Oh, I would be ok (I hope) at 5’0. Never been to one, though.

Stephanie, do you prefer PM or M dolls, being that you own both?

  28. Selena says:

    ok, real guick,
PM dolls were sorta better. Then since M started taking over, the quality isn’t as good. I can literally squeeze beckie’s arms!
    ok, leaving!

  29. Lily says:

    I’m 5’8″ . . . taller than most people at AGP:

  30. Stephanie says:

    Anne,

I don’t prefer one entirely over the other, but rather different aspects of each. I like Kirsten and Kaitlyn(7)’s squishier PM bodies and limbs, and Felicity’s brighter Mattel face-paint and silky hair.

  31. Anne says:

I agree with you. I just got Lissie for my birthday (June 25) and she is gorgeous. I also have Kirsten(2003), Samantha(2005), and Nellie(2006). Kirsti, Sam, and Lissie all have the “classic” mold, but each one is different as the dolls (and their molds) further evolved over time. Also, my newer dolls have more face paint then my older ones do. It is neat to see the progression of the Mattel dolls over the span of 6 years.

  32. Taelyn says:

    Selena, I’m 5’3”! yay!
Good Morning Everyone! It’s 4:36! I have to go w/ to take my sis to the airport. Gosh I’ll have to watch her dog all week =[ it can be a pest!
I saw a pic on istockphoto of a girl with the ag star hoodie! i’ll have to send you guys the link!

  33. Taelyn says:
  34. priscilla says:

that’s cool taelyn! btw-i love your name! p.s.how tall are most of the people at ag place? iv never been there,i’m 4’6″,so would i be shorter or taller? i’m just wondering…

  35. Lily says:

There’s a bunch of little kids and a bunch of their parents, so you’d be fine. I just feel weird when I go because I’m taller than most everyone – including the parents.

  36. Sara says:

Same here. But, I kno some one who is over 7 feet tall!!!!!!

  37. Taelyn says:

Pricilla- thanks. Not many people have my name =]
Yeah, when I went to AGP, most people where shorter because their was a lot of little girls there, mostly like 7-9 year olds.

  38. Taelyn says:

    sara- wow! thats really tall!

  39. priscilla says:

    thanks taelyn. sarah,whoa! 7 feet?

  40. Sara says:

    Somewhere around there!

Taelyn~ what dolls do u have? Don’t ask me, it’ll take a while! I have about 20 counting the Bittys!

  41. Taelyn says:

its easy for me to count.
    1- julie
lol! i’m going to agp (or is it bb) in miniapolis three weeks from now, so we’ll see. i might get a jlu.

  42. Zoe says:

i live in tx. isnt there an agp there? i dont know why we dont just go there… of course this miniapolis trip isnt just for ag =]

  43. Taelyn says:

whoops! im w/ a friend so i posted as her on accident. wowz. i slept over so yeah. she told me about this site. ^^

  44. Selena says:

    who??? Zoe???

ya, there’s one (bistro) in Downtown Dallas, near the airport. I go there when I can but it’s like 45 min away… That’s were I got november!! (AKA beckie)

  45. Taelyn says:

yes. i was at her house, but now im back. shes kinda disconnected from ag right now.

im gonna take pics of my doll for the 4th

  46. alli says:

    whateverzezzzz

  47. Gracie says:

They should make a girl of the year doll who’s issue in her books is she is too self concious. At about the age of eleven girls start hating themselves and I think that American Girl should help girls find thier solution.

  48. Katie says:

I have a pre-mattel Kirsten, too. I got her on Ebay without even knowing she was P-M.
I also got a few of her pre-mattel outfits with her. Very nice!!!!

  49. Al says:

I don’t have one, but my brother-in-laws sister does and she lets me see them all the time the are really cool! I love this website it’s sooooo cool!
