Pre-Mattel Kirsten American Girl Doll

One of our readers, Stephanie, sent me some pictures of her dolls. I absolutely love the pictures of her Pre-Mattel Kirsten and American Girl Doll of Today #7.

Pre Mattel American Girl Doll Kirsten

Dolls made before 1998 are considered “pre-Mattel” since Pleasant Rowland sold the American Girl Company to Mattel that year.

Pre-Mattel American Girl Doll

While Pre-Mattel dolls are hard to find, they are still available regularly on eBay and if you are lucky you may find one at a yard sale or even a thrift store.

  3. Hazel on June 30th, 2009 9:40 pm

cool right now have a Pre mattel JLY samantha Kirsten and Josafina but i might have to replace all there heads because there in realy bad condition and i dont want them to fall apart

  4. Lily on June 30th, 2009 9:45 pm

I’m not really a stickler for PM dolls themselves; I just want some of the historical outfits from PM that they retired. Those dolls are in nice condition, considering their age.

  5. Abby on June 30th, 2009 9:53 pm

I’m kinda sad. Char did you get my pictures?

  6. Anne on June 30th, 2009 10:08 pm

    Beautiful dolls!

  7. Char on July 1st, 2009 6:10 am

Abby – I got your pictures and will get them posted. Stephanie’s pictures have been sitting in my inbox for about a week and I try to post in the order received. Give me another day or so – I am swamped with work and my kids have a swim meet this afternoon.

Thanks for sending them in and for being patient with me.

  8. priscilla on July 1st, 2009 7:34 am

    aww,i love pre-mattel doll’s faces,they’re so sweet.

  9. Abby on July 1st, 2009 10:01 am

    Ok! no problem.

  10. Abby on July 1st, 2009 10:03 am

Also I don’t know any Stephanies on here….

  11. Char on July 1st, 2009 10:38 am

Abby -remember that not everyone posts using their real names and not all of my readers participate in the conversation. However, its your lucky day – my kids’ swim meet got canceled for this afternoon and I will have more time to post your pictures.

  12. Ashley on July 1st, 2009 10:42 am

I didn’t know there was such differences between the two companies dolls! This makes me worry about whether I should look on Ebay for Kirsten, instead of going to the Chicago store… All four of my others are pre-mattel. I’ll send in pictures for you!

  13. Lena on July 1st, 2009 10:53 am

There’s not much difference in PM and Mattel dolls. The Mattel dolls are slightly thinner, their cheeks are less chubby, and they have more paint on them. Other than that, they are still the same dolls.

  14. Lily on July 1st, 2009 11:41 am

Ashley, you would probably be happier with a new Kirsten doll instead of someone’s childhood castoff. The differences are minimal and a new doll is more aesthetically pleasing than any used PM doll.

  15. Lena on July 1st, 2009 11:47 am

Ummm…..no. If you buy an old cheap doll on ebay, you can customize her any way you want and make her more pleasing to you. My neighbor made Sarah (Addy’s friend) this way by giving her a new wig.

Personally, I prefer the PM dolls.

  16. Lena on July 1st, 2009 12:23 pm

I like PM dolls better actually. I think they are worth the fuss, even if you don’t customize them.

  17. Lily on July 1st, 2009 12:28 pm

Everyone thinks that the Pre-Mattel days are the only worthwhile days of the AG line. The dolls had a bunch of detailed accessory sets and the quality was great. But think about how many dolls have been released since then. Kit, Kaya, Nellie, Emily, Julie, Ivy, Ruthie, Lindsey, Kailey, Marisol, Jess, Nicki, Mia, Chrissa, Gwen, and Sonali . . . even though we may not like it when Mattel retires old favorites, they’ve expanded the line so much. Before Mattel, stuff was rarely introduced. Now there’s something new 6 times a year. That’s worth it to me.

  18. Lily on July 1st, 2009 12:29 pm

What makes PM dolls better? Just because they bear no relation to Mattel?

  19. Lena on July 1st, 2009 12:32 pm

I never said I liked PC better than Mattel, only their dolls. I miss all the accessories, but I do like some of the new ones (If they weren’t so pastel, I’d like them all).

That said, if all the characters don’t get a best friend, I don’t think that line should exist. If they do get friends…. my poor wallet…..

And GOTYs were in production durring the transitional days (Lindsey came out when Rowling was still president of the company), so I think PC would have still made them.

  20. Lena on July 1st, 2009 12:36 pm

I like thir faces better. It’s called a “presonal preference”

  21. Lily on July 1st, 2009 12:38 pm

Lindsey is my least favorite LE doll. That’s probably just because she had a no collection and her clothes are outdated. She has a sweet face though.

For some of the historical characters, a best friend would be too similar to the doll herself. I wish Kirsten had a best friend (and some more outfits!)

  22. Lena on July 1st, 2009 12:44 pm

Nor nessesaraly. Speaking Rain was blind (different eyes), Mariana would have short hair, Singing Bird is Suiox, Sara has very short hair/Harriet has curls. Only Ana would have an issue. I see Rose more likley because they don’t stress how much she looks like Beckie, and she would be easier to photoshop.

I like Lindsey. That’s what people really wore in 2001, and nothing stops you from dressing her in JLY clothes.

  23. Lily on July 1st, 2009 12:48 pm

I sure as heck didn’t wear that in 2001.

  24. Lily on July 1st, 2009 12:50 pm

And I’m not talking about how the best friends would look too similar; it’s how their lifestyles aren’t very different. Sure, Speaking Rain may be blind, but she’d still be from the same tribe as Kaya.

  25. Lily on July 1st, 2009 12:52 pm

Yes, I know that’s your personal opinion. But some people are freaking out when they read comments about how great PM dolls are. They don’t even know the difference between the two and just automatically assume that PM dolls must be better.

  26. Lily on July 1st, 2009 12:53 pm

I think Kirsten would be a good candidate for having a best friend doll. As long as it isn’t Marta . . . that was a sad part of Meet Kirsten.

  27. Lena on July 1st, 2009 12:58 pm

They not. Well, pre 09 were better, because the 09 dolls have their joint strings tied, not on clamps like they previously were and tend to be very floppy *stares at Helena and Nali* Otherwise, the only real difference is that PM dolls tend to be fatter than Mattel dolls and they have less coloring.

Harriet is rich, Singin Bird is obvious, Mariana is Pueblo indian, and Speaking Rain’s blind and lived with a different tribe for some time.

  28. Abby on July 1st, 2009 12:58 pm

Then thats good news for me! but I’m sure your girls are sad they won’t get to swim today.

  29. Lena on July 1st, 2009 12:58 pm

I doubt it’d be Marta. Speaking Rain or Ana is more likley.

  30. Anne on July 1st, 2009 1:00 pm

I don’t think AG would make a friend that died in the beginning or middle of the first book. It would probably be Speaking Rain, which I would love. I always loved the secret friendship of K and SR, and when SR saves Peter and is welcomed into the Larson home.

  31. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:01 pm

Ana is too similar to Kirsten. I bet it’d be Speaking Rain.

  32. Abby on July 1st, 2009 1:01 pm

Also guess what??? I fixed Kaya’s hair! it was all frizzy and stuff! maybe in a few weeks ill send Char the pictures casue I just sent something in earlier.

  33. Anne on July 1st, 2009 1:01 pm

    I meant Singing Bird.

I hope it’s not Anna. She would look almost identical to Kirsten and she would have to be shorter, since Anna is 7 when Kirsten in 9, right?

  34. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:02 pm

AG retired the straw hat to Kirsten’s summer outfit! :(

I’m glad I already have that outfit. I hope AG gives Kirsten a new lease on life. They’ve ignored her for so long.

  35. Anne on July 1st, 2009 1:02 pm

That’s great, Abby! I recently fixed Kirsten, Samantha, and Nellie’s hair, so I understand how happy you are. How did you fix Kaya’s?

  36. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:03 pm

I meant Singing Bird too. Those Native American names are so strange sometimes!

  37. Anne on July 1st, 2009 1:03 pm

Seriously? Too bad. I liked the hat and it was important in her summer story, but it doesn’t stay on her head very well.

  38. Lena on July 1st, 2009 1:04 pm

Exactly, but they might pull an Elizabeth on us, and height doesn’t matter. I know people who mae the dolls anywhere between 7-13.

I vote for SB, but she’s unlikley as she’d have what Kaya has, and kaya doesn’t sell well.

  39. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:04 pm

I wonder what the next doll to be retired will be? My guess is Felicity. AG has decimated her collection so much there’s not much left to retire anymore, so I hope it’s her next.

  40. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:05 pm

Where did you hear that Kaya doesn’t sell well? I could guess that just because I was a very repulsed 8 year old when she was a released . . . “An Indian! She doesn’t have any pretty clothes!”

  41. Lena on July 1st, 2009 1:06 pm

    Archived.

    Molly i bet.

  42. Lena on July 1st, 2009 1:07 pm

Lily, you and pretty clothes. It’s an opinion, and IMO, yes, she does.

  43. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:07 pm

I’ve warmed up to Kaya some. I like her face mold, but I doubt I’ll buy her soon. Ahead of her is Emily, Julie, Ruthie, Addy, Chrissa, Josefina, and GOTY 2010.

  44. Anne on July 1st, 2009 1:07 pm

But AG has retired most of every girl’s collection (Kit and Molly currently have the most items remaining, I think). Then again, Lissie has been around a long time and she does have a movie and a BFF. I wonder. I’m glad I just got Lissie. I won’t get Lizzie, though – I never wanted her.

  45. Lena on July 1st, 2009 1:08 pm

You don’t even know who GOTY 2010 will be

  46. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:08 pm

That was from an 8 year old’s point of view, remember? I don’t have any qualms about Kaya now, and she has had some nice outfits. I loved that dress with the red cape. I hope it’s available for cheap on eBay.

  47. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:09 pm

    I always like the GOTY!

  48. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:09 pm

    Why Molly?

  49. Lena on July 1st, 2009 1:10 pm

Because she was one of the original three, has a very large collection, and a best friend, and a movie.

  50. Anne on July 1st, 2009 1:10 pm

    Yeah – why Molly?

  51. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:10 pm

Emily is #1 on my list. I’m not going to be caught off guard when AG announces Molly’s archival and I still don’t have half of the cute outfits.

  52. Anne on July 1st, 2009 1:10 pm

    Hehe – you already answered.

  53. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:11 pm

Well, Felicity has a best friend and a movie also.

  54. Abby on July 1st, 2009 1:11 pm

Anne – It toke a while but my mom washed it, combed it all out, and then used a straghtner on low and she looks brand new!

  55. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:12 pm

But where did you hear that Kaya is a poor seller? Is she the worst?

  56. Anne on July 1st, 2009 1:12 pm

I wish AG didn’t archive any historicals and I hope that they never will again,, but that seems unlikely.

Where are the “AG Archives” that Sam, Nellie and their collection(s) was moved to, anyway.

  57. Lena on July 1st, 2009 1:13 pm

I assume so because like you said, the target are range doesn’t think she’s “pretty”.

  58. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:14 pm

It’s figurative. They probably just saved the production plans for the dolls and their outfits that they archived.

  59. Anne on July 1st, 2009 1:14 pm

But she wasn’t one of the original three, Lily.

Kaya is one of the “Four Forgotten,” a group of dolls (Kaya, Josefina, Kirsten, and Addy) that don’t sell as well as the others. Shame because I really like all four of them, especially Kirsten and Addy.

  60. Lena on July 1st, 2009 1:15 pm

They don’t exist. Sam is only a memory now, probably a Sam on display in the AGPs, but that;s it.

  61. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:15 pm

I think the best way to figure out why AG does what it does it to think of yourself when you were 8-12. Or look to a current 8-12 year old. Take my cousins, for example. They love Chrissa so much that they bought 2 Chrissa dolls.

  62. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:16 pm

Is AG intent on getting rid of the original 3 or something?

  63. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:17 pm

As long as we get a good warning and a great doll replaces the archived one, I don’t mind archivals that much. Sam was great, but she was old and she made room for Rebecca.

  64. Anne on July 1st, 2009 1:18 pm

Wow, I just searched for the archives on AG’s site and it turns out that it does exist, sort of. I got to it by putting “farewell, Samantha” in the search box at the top of the page. They certainly don’t have it out for all to see, though. My name should be a link to the page. Chick it out.

  65. Anne on July 1st, 2009 1:20 pm

I discovered AG when I was about 8 1/2 and I loved Kirsten and Kirsten only. I guess most girls in that age range today like the today girls, the GOTY’s, or the dolls with pretty, fancy clothes (used to be Samantha, now Lissie, I guess – her clothes that are currently available look like the clothes Sam would have had if she lived back then, but you know how I feel about those outfits).

  66. Abby on July 1st, 2009 1:20 pm

I think Kaya is really pretty and I really like her because she doesn’t have “buck teeth” like the other dolls.

  67. Anne on July 1st, 2009 1:21 pm

Check it out, not chick it out :)

  68. Anne on July 1st, 2009 1:22 pm

When I smile like the dolls, I look so hideous (just being completely honest) but it doesn’t look that bad on the dolls. I agree with you, though.

  69. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:23 pm

    I think I’ve discovered AG’s archival technique.

    1. beef up the collection with a movie, BFF, etc.
    2. wait for the hype to die down
    3. start retiring the extra movie stuff
    4. archive the doll

  70. Anne on July 1st, 2009 1:23 pm

    Seems about right.

  71. Stephanie on July 1st, 2009 1:24 pm

    Lily,

I don’t think my PM AGs look “slightly grubby” at all. I’ve had them since childhood and have always taken very good care of them. Please keep such negative comments to yourself!

  72. Anne on July 1st, 2009 1:24 pm

OK, I’m leaving to walk my neighbor’s dogs. $2.50 and the two cutest greyhounds ever await me.

  73. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:26 pm

Felicity is in late phase 3. Molly is in early phase 3. Kit just finished phase 1 and is entering phase 2. Samantha has completed phase 4.

  74. Lena on July 1st, 2009 1:31 pm

I very much doubt Kit will be archived.

You don’t now they’re pattern. Only one doll has been archived so far, and you need at least 3 for there to be a pattern.

  75. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:34 pm

That was just a hypothesis. Now it’s time to see if it’ll hold true.

  76. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:35 pm

Give it two years, and I’ll bet that either Felicity or Molly will be gone.

  77. Lena on July 1st, 2009 1:38 pm

Yes, some one will be gone, but you don’t know who until it happens. Mine was just a hypothesis based on Sam.

Please excuse me, but I’m on an old keyboard and the K key sometimes won’t work. I know I miss spelled a word, it’s not my fault.

  78. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:51 pm

I’m still not sure if I should get Julie or Chrissa. They both have cute swimsuits, Chrissa is plainer, and Julie is more expensive. I’m pretty sure I’ll get Emily and her and Molly’s swimsuits.

  79. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:55 pm

If I got all 3 dolls and all 3 swimsuits, the total would be around $500 . . . waaaaay too much at the moment. So either Chrissa or Julie has to go.

  80. Lily on July 1st, 2009 1:58 pm

And I need to save some so I can buy a few handmade My Twinn outfits.

  81. Lily on July 1st, 2009 2:10 pm

Has anyone seen Julie or Chrissa in person? Choosing between them is so hard.

  82. Lena on July 1st, 2009 2:16 pm

I saw Julie in person. I like her over Chrissa.

  83. Char on July 1st, 2009 2:30 pm

Stephanie – i think your dolls are gorgeous and I thank you for sending in the pictures!!

We have Julie and Chrissa – they are both beautiful and I’d have a hard time picking between the two.

  84. Lily on July 1st, 2009 2:33 pm

Unfortunately, the prospect of spending $425 is making me choose between the two :( . . . I could spend it, but I’d be broke, and my parents will most definitely object. Julie, Chrissa, Julie, Chrissa . . . Emily? Ugh, this is exhausting.

  85. Lily on July 1st, 2009 2:40 pm

    SOS :(

  86. Lena on July 1st, 2009 2:50 pm

Haha… SOS doesn’t stand for anything. It’s just a general distress signal

    My vote’s for Julie.

  87. priscilla on July 1st, 2009 2:55 pm

i have julie,so i’d pick her. but i love chrissa’s story…maybe you can get chrissa and julie’s mini doll. i think the next doll to retire will be kaya or molly.

  88. Lena on July 1st, 2009 2:57 pm

Doubt I’ll be Kaya. She’s not white

I had an idea for a doll: a Metis girl. One with an Native mother and a French father, that way, she could have both Native clothes and French clothes.

  89. priscilla on July 1st, 2009 3:01 pm

why would she not be retired because she’s white?!? p.s. what is metis?

  90. priscilla on July 1st, 2009 3:02 pm

anne,i like tat arciva site, its pretty cool.

  91. priscilla on July 1st, 2009 3:03 pm

oops! i meant to write *that* and *archival*.

  92. priscilla on July 1st, 2009 3:04 pm

today i went to see a free movie,it was alvin and the chipmuks.(i know, you dont care…)

  93. Lena on July 1st, 2009 3:04 pm

Metis means half Native, half French.

Political Correctness. There would be a huge backlash at Matel if they did archive Kaya, Josefina, or Addy.

  94. Sara on July 1st, 2009 3:19 pm

    Me too.

I have both Chrissa and Julie. Hair wise I prefer Chrissa cause it’s easier to take care of, outfit wise Julie. So they’re both winners. Sry if that doesn’t help!!

  95. Abby on July 1st, 2009 4:43 pm

I would get Chrissa because she’s only here for a year. but on the other hand, Julie’s hair is beautiful and you can do way more styles. P.S. Char, sorry to bother you again but its around 5:45 here so is are my pics gonna be posted tomorrow?

  96. Abby on July 1st, 2009 4:45 pm

oops! sorry Stephanie! I didn’t believe in you…

  97. Abby on July 1st, 2009 4:50 pm

Stephanie – It look like your dolls hair need help! very frizzy. how many years have you had them? do you have any more?

  98. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:00 pm

Archiving Kaya, Josefina, or Addy wouldn’t necessarily be an issue of political correctness; the backlash would be as a result of people pulling the race card. People were going after AG for arbitrary things like Marisol’s Hispanic neighborhood and the fact that there was no Jewish dolls. I don’t think it’s right that those dolls are protected just because they’re a certain race. Even if AG replaced, say, Kaya, with Singing Bird, people would still go after them with knives.

Thanks for the advice, Priscilla, but I don’t buy the mini dolls. I’ll just have to decide between Julie and Chrissa. It’s going to be a hard decision . . . or a hard dent in my pocket!

  99. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:01 pm

I would love a Metis doll. She could replace Kaya (since she’s a poor seller).

  100. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:07 pm

Not before I see a Kaya movie.

  101. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:08 pm

The colored dolls haven’t been around as long as the whitee dolls. Kirsten, Molly, and Lissie all came before them, and I’d rather have them archived first.

  102. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:10 pm

A Kaya movie probably wouldn’t be much of a success, for the same reason her collection isn’t. I’d like to see Kaya’s face mold on a new doll.

  103. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:11 pm

There were rumors that Elizabeth would have her mold. Sadly, no.

I would see it. And I don’t think it fair that only white dolls have movies.

  104. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:11 pm

I’d like Felicity gone first. As long as I have a sufficient chunk of each doll’s collection, archive away!

  105. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:12 pm

Molly first. Just because she’s so whiny.

  106. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:12 pm

The movie might appeal to us, but to 8 year olds . . . not so much. They’d be wondering where all of the pretty outfits are, etc.

  107. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:13 pm

Molly is a lot like me, I think. I love her books and the WWII setting.

  108. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:13 pm

Before they get rid of Kirsten, she needs a best friend and some new clothes. Then, let a rip!

  109. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:14 pm

Yeah, I remember seeing Elizabeth rumors on the “Complete Guide to American Girl Doll Collecting” website. I liked her appearance then. The white Kaya mold was cool.

  110. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:15 pm

The forgotten four need movies and friends. I’d done with irsten’s collection, so unlike Sam, I’ll be sad, but not as much.

  111. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:18 pm

I still need Kirsten’s b-day, school, and winter outfits before I’m completely satisfied. Her outfits are always on the back burner because there’s always another doll I want.

  112. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:26 pm

Felicity, on the other hand, is as good as gone since most of her outfits that relate to her stories are retired. Now she only has that fancy junk that I either already have or don’t want. I’m really hoping she’s next.

  113. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:26 pm

Winter’s all i need of Kirsten and Kit’s, and i’ll be getting that this winter. Sam’s I need birthday, summer, and winter, then I can move on to Molly & Lisse.

Actually, i think I’ll get Sam’s things as I manage to find them cheap on ebay, in between the other girls.

  114. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:28 pm

I doubt she’s next. Smaller collection = less space taken up in wherehouses.

I really dislike her “new and improved” dresses.

  115. Taelyn on July 1st, 2009 5:28 pm

oh my gosh! they are so sweet! i love old dolls! i dont have any pm though. just my julie =]

  116. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:29 pm

    Um…. Julie can’t be PM.

  117. Abby on July 1st, 2009 5:29 pm

    I’m bored.

  118. Taelyn on July 1st, 2009 5:30 pm

Yeah, i don’t like it when they make the dresses and stuff all shiny and new and use brighter colors. like i doubt someone in those times would have a neon pink dress like elizabeths

  119. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:30 pm

I like her lavender dress (it looks great next to Elizabeth), but I wish there was a modified version of the rose garden gown. I didn’t like that print, but they could’ve just changed the color. Remember AG’s target age group, though! A pretty purple dress is quite appealing to an 8 year old!

That gala gown was overkill. How many galas and parties is a middle class colonial girl going to go to?

  120. Taelyn on July 1st, 2009 5:30 pm

no, i mean julies my only doll

  121. Taelyn on July 1st, 2009 5:31 pm

lol, so true about that gala. dont they have like 3? let me check

  122. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:32 pm

One. The royal govenor’s ball in the christmas book. Then the parties stopped.

  123. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:32 pm

In Elizabeth’s book, her gown wasn’t such a vivid pink; it was a dusty rose color (much more releastic). I personally like Felicity and Elizabeth’s meet gowns, but it’s not because of their historical authenticity. The colors look nice together.

  124. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:32 pm

    4 counting Elizabeths.

Yeah, i though of that after I submited the comment.

  125. Taelyn on July 1st, 2009 5:33 pm

only one. lol i must be combining all the dolls together!

  126. Taelyn on July 1st, 2009 5:34 pm

does anyone who is one right now have the llama?

  127. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:34 pm

If Felicity is archived, I’ll buy the riding outfits and the gala outfit (just because I love that color of red). I won’t waste my money on those plain nightgowns (even if they are historically accurate).

  128. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:34 pm

No, there are four party gowns.

    Lissie & Lisbeth;s Christmas, Lizbeth’s meet, Lissie’s gala.

  129. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:35 pm

No, I don’t have the llama. It’s very cute though! I want to get it, but I’d probably regret it since that $25 could’ve bought an outfit.

  130. Taelyn on July 1st, 2009 5:35 pm

true. i didnt count christmas. i love felicity. shes so unique. especially her eyes

  131. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:35 pm

Lily, WASTE your money? What if someone likes the outfits? It’s not a waste then.

  132. Taelyn on July 1st, 2009 5:37 pm

omg the honey pajamas are so cute! im a sucker for pjs!

  133. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:37 pm

    I don’t have a llama. But i want it.

  134. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:37 pm

With all of these retirements, Felicity’s collection is way out of whack. All of her everyday outfits have been retired so now there’s the formal stuff, tea gowns, and nightgowns. Lissie needs to be put out of her misery.

  135. Taelyn on July 1st, 2009 5:38 pm

i have to read 30 min a day. which ag books do you suggest?

  136. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:39 pm

Personal preference, Lena :) A waste for one person isn’t a waste for another.

  137. Taelyn on July 1st, 2009 5:39 pm

i love the llama! i might get her( him?) when i got to the minnesota bb

  138. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:40 pm

LA next week! Deciding is tough.

  139. Abby on July 1st, 2009 5:40 pm

    Addy’s and Samantha’s book.

  140. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:42 pm

Personal preference is “I don’t like”

    “waste” is dowright rude.

Any of them, especially Kaya, Josefina, and Addy’s.

  141. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:44 pm

And pointing that out isn’t rude? . . . just saying.

  142. Abby on July 1st, 2009 5:44 pm

    LOL :D

  143. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:45 pm

And it wouldn’t necessarily be a waste for me beacause I think they’re hideous or something; they’re just white and look like plain shifts.

  144. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:45 pm

Not really. Your offended, but I’m sure no one else on here is.

  145. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:46 pm

Hey, Abby, how do you do the big grin with emoticons?

  146. Abby on July 1st, 2009 5:46 pm

    like this…

    : D
    :D

  147. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:46 pm

Hey, fight fire with fire . . . and you were just rude again

  148. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:47 pm

    :D

  149. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:47 pm

    That would be their charm.

  150. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:47 pm

    Your You’re There Their They’re

  151. Abby on July 1st, 2009 5:48 pm

    Hehehe….

  152. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:48 pm

No, I was simple pionting something out, there is a difference.

  153. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:49 pm

And we’re right back at personal preference!

I wish Chrissa’s meet outfit was a little more detailed; next to say, Julie, she looks like a stripped down doll. Surely it costs more to make Julie over Chrissa.

  154. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:50 pm

How are we back at personal preference?

  155. Abby on July 1st, 2009 5:50 pm

JULIE is perty so I would pick her. my opinion.

  156. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:50 pm

I’m starting to kind of tilt toward Chrissa, though.

  157. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:51 pm

Let’s let that topic rest a bit.

  158. Abby on July 1st, 2009 5:51 pm

if you like long hair you won’t be dissapointed with Julie. and she has one of the cutest faces.

  159. Natalie on July 1st, 2009 5:51 pm

Hey guys click on my name to check out this cool blog!

  160. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:52 pm

    Whatever Lily.

  161. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:53 pm

I don’t really like the Josefina mold on Julie. The only dolls I like it on are Becie and Fina

  162. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:53 pm

The reason why I’m kind of favoring Chrissa at the moment is because I don’t want to get the 2009 doll of the year when it’s almost 2010. I’d like to display her in her swim team outfit next to Molly and Emily.

Julie, on the other hand, has a great meet outfit and that long, silky hair. She also has a swimsuit, but it’s $52 for the complete outfit . . . ouch!

  163. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:55 pm

The reason why I said we’re back at personal preference is because you said the charm of the nightgowns is because they’re plain and white . . . atleast , that’s what I thought you said. But we’re not here to argue, and I need help deciding between Chrissa and Julie!

  164. Abby on July 1st, 2009 5:55 pm

    ya… pretty expensive….

  165. Natalie on July 1st, 2009 5:56 pm

I love Julie! She has the best hair for styling! She has really good books too…

  166. Abby on July 1st, 2009 5:56 pm

    I like Julies PJ’s over Chrissa’s

  167. Lena on July 1st, 2009 5:56 pm

    Julie, as i’ve already said.

That was my preference, yes. I though you meant about you being rude and me pointing it out.

  168. Natalie on July 1st, 2009 5:58 pm

That’s a hard decision, Lily. Remember Chrissa won’t be here for as long as Julie will.

  169. Char on July 1st, 2009 5:58 pm

Taelyn – we have the llama – very cute!

Lena, Lily and others – please keep things nice or I will start moderating all comments and that will really slow down the conversations.

  170. Lily on July 1st, 2009 5:59 pm

But Julie’s meet outfit is so cute she wouldn’t need her summer outfit right off the bat.

  171. Natalie on July 1st, 2009 5:59 pm

If I were you, I’d think about all the things I like about them both. Then whoever has the most things I like, I’d get.

  172. Georgia on July 1st, 2009 6:00 pm

I know this was mentioned long ago, but SOS stands for save our souls. Just putting it out there.
I would definitly choose Julie because she is so beautiful. But then I’ve never seen chrissa in person so I don’t know what she’s really like.

  173. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:00 pm

I’m sorry, Char. Sometimes you type something and you don’t realize that it offends someone else.

  174. Natalie on July 1st, 2009 6:01 pm

I think I’d still get Julie though, because I just like her more.

  175. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:01 pm

    And then little spats start.

  176. Georgia on July 1st, 2009 6:02 pm

Julie’s hair however is very silky. It looks nice in most styles but is very hard to braid because it is so slippery.

  177. Natalie on July 1st, 2009 6:03 pm

When are you going to get Chrissa/Julie?

  178. Lena on July 1st, 2009 6:03 pm

Georgia, no it doesn’t. SOS in morse code is very simple and no one can mistake it for anything else.

    . . . – - – . . .

That’s SOS. It has no meaning.

  179. Natalie on July 1st, 2009 6:04 pm

I don’t mean to be nosy, but what were you fighting about?

  180. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:04 pm

Okay, if I get Chrissa and Emily plus 3 swimsuits it’ll be $297 before tax.

If I get Julie and Emily plus 2 swimsuits, it’ll be $288.

  181. Lena on July 1st, 2009 6:06 pm

I’d get Julie. BTW, Chrissa’s wig is very thin, and Julie’s is thicker.

  182. Natalie on July 1st, 2009 6:06 pm

I’m going to the American Girl Place in Chicago for the first time soon. Has anyone been there? What is it like?

  183. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:07 pm

I’m going to Los Angeles next week on a family vacation, and we’ll be stopping by the AG Place there. I’m wanting to stock up there so I don’t have to pay shipping charges.

The arguement was about some doll outfits. I said that if I got them, it’d feel like a waste, Lena called me rude, I called her rude for calling me rude . .

  184. Lena on July 1st, 2009 6:07 pm

i know Char’s been. I’ve only been in NY, so i can’t be of any help.

  185. Abby on July 1st, 2009 6:07 pm

Kaya is so pretty I recomend her to anyone who has no idea what AG to get.

  186. Natalie on July 1st, 2009 6:08 pm

I’m getting Rebecca and things for her and things for Julie

  187. Abby on July 1st, 2009 6:08 pm

Natile Ive been to the one in Chicago in December.

  188. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:08 pm

If I don’t get Julie now, I’ll get her for Christmas. If I get Chrissa now, I will have to buy less of her collection at Christmas, thereby freeing up room for historical stuff.

  189. Lena on July 1st, 2009 6:08 pm

What Lily said. We’re over it, and hopefully friends again. Truce?

    *Offers hand*

  190. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:09 pm

I’ve been to New York and Dallas (2006 and 2008).

  191. Natalie on July 1st, 2009 6:09 pm

I’m really excited, but I’m not sure what to expect.

  192. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:09 pm

    Accepted.

  193. Natalie on July 1st, 2009 6:10 pm

Do you guys hang out here alot?

  194. Abby on July 1st, 2009 6:10 pm

Um, I’m sure its changed alot since Ive been there at Christmas time.

  195. Abby on July 1st, 2009 6:10 pm

    Yes, I do alot!

  196. Lena on July 1st, 2009 6:11 pm

I do. I’m homeschooled and have nothing beter to do (not that that’s a bad thing)

  197. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:11 pm

It’s a lot of fun the first time. For me, it’s kind of stressful because I’m always with a parent who doesn’t want to be there and thinks a kid my age shouldn’t be there, I have to decide what stuff I’m going to get, etc.

  198. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:12 pm

Yeah, I’m here alot. I even got on at school one time.

  199. Lena on July 1st, 2009 6:12 pm

It’s very stressfull for everyone else in the store. Why? Because I dress extra goth when I go there, just for the fun of them staring.

  200. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:14 pm

I know most of you like Julie better, but do you think my reasons for getting Chrissa first make sense? Don’t get me wrong, I’m still strongly considering buying Julie.

  201. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:15 pm

Hmm . . . what’s extra goth? Do you drag out the heavy eyeliner?

  202. Lena on July 1st, 2009 6:15 pm

They do make sense to me. I’d still go with Jules though.

  203. Char on July 1st, 2009 6:16 pm

Natalie – if you put Chicago in the search box at the top of the page (in the black bar under the header graphic) you can find a list of all the posts I have done about American Girl Place Chicago – complete with plenty of pictures. Its beautiful and I would love to go back and take my girls with me this time.

  204. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:16 pm

I try to dress like a little kid when I go, but at 5′8″, I feel out of place no matter what. The place is packed with a bunch of screeching 8 year olds and their parents.

  205. Abby on July 1st, 2009 6:16 pm

My guess wearing black, blue, and purple.

  206. Lena on July 1st, 2009 6:17 pm

No, lots of black, and lace. And black lace. And roses. Don’t ask.

  207. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:18 pm

I don’t think I’ll be able to get my parents to buy a doll for me. They’re putting the stuff on their credit card, so when they see $425 for all 3 dolls, they’ll go ballistic. They’re already giving me a month’s advance on my birthday money and I don’t want to be in the hole.

  208. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:19 pm

Mmm . . . Hot Topic. Say no more. ;)

  209. Abby on July 1st, 2009 6:19 pm

    Bored….. bored….. BORED!

  210. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:20 pm

Besides, $425 is a heck of a lot of money to spend on dolls in one sitting. I couldn’t live with myself.

  211. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:22 pm

Does anyone else feel like they’re getting shortchanged with Chrissa’s meet outfit? Compare her with any other historical doll, and her outfit looks way plain.

  212. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:22 pm

I still like it, but for $95, it doesn’t seem like a whole lot.

  213. Georgia on July 1st, 2009 6:25 pm

When I went to see the Little Mermaid on Broadway, I wore Kit’s meet outfit(which i bought in LA) Not realising that there would be people there that would know who I was dressed as. There were lots of kids there going “Mommy look, it’s KIT!” it was funny!

  214. Abby on July 1st, 2009 6:25 pm

    I’m here! :)

  215. Abby on July 1st, 2009 6:28 pm

    LOL!

  216. Taelyn on July 1st, 2009 6:30 pm

chrissas meet outfit is… interesting! i know its suposed to be for like a ten-year-old girl, but i dont see many ten-year-old dressed like THAT. i think that if they really want to make it modern she should be wearing jeans and a baby t with words across the front and come w/ a cell phone lol

  217. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:30 pm

    That is funny, Georgia!

One time in Elementary school, we had to dress up as Revolutionary War people, and some girl was wearing Felicity’s meet dress!

  218. Lily on July 1st, 2009 6:31 pm

Yeah, Chrissa’s outfit doesn’t seem terribly representative of what people wear today, from what I’ve seen, atleast.

  219. Taelyn on July 1st, 2009 6:31 pm

lol, georgia! i had to work at this art fest thing w/ my mom and there was this girl carrying aorund nicki and i turned to my friend gabriella and said “omigod! it’s NICKI!” and she looked at me like i was crazy (which i am =})

  220. Taelyn on July 1st, 2009 6:33 pm

we had pajama day at this summer acting camp i went to and a 7th grader wore samantha’s nighty! i have nothing against her, she’s a nice girl, but you could totally see through it!

  221. Abby on July 1st, 2009 6:37 pm

One time, I was walking out of my classroom to use the bathroom when a second grader came strolling down the hall with the star hoodie.

  222. Abby on July 1st, 2009 6:47 pm

    I meant “Wearing” the hoodie.

  223. Selena on July 1st, 2009 9:20 pm

I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing that to.. anywhere!! And I haven’t seen many ppl wearing dresses to school lately, have you?? Actually, maybe they do IDK, how should I know!!! I just know that my bros don’t wear dresses ;)

    *watching Valkrie (??spelling??) *

hehe, that’s funny, I make ppl stare too when I go to AG…

  224. Stephanie on July 1st, 2009 9:25 pm

    Abby,

My dolls’ hair is a bit frizzy – they could probably both use a “downey dunk,” but I’m kind of afraid to do so. I’ve had Kirsten since 1995 and #7 since about 1996/1997. I do have another doll now, a Felicity, which I got for Christmas 2008. I sent her pics to Char too, but they didn’t get put up.

  225. Lily on July 1st, 2009 9:39 pm

When I go to AG, I feel like the giant in Jack and the Beanstalk.

  226. Selena on July 1st, 2009 9:46 pm

really??? even though I’m 5′2 (or 5′3 or somethin’) they are usually tons of ppl taller than me…

    bouna notte!

  227. Anne on July 1st, 2009 9:49 pm

Oh, I would be ok (I hope) at 5′0. Never been to one, though.

Stephanie, do you prefer PM or M dolls, being that you own both?

  228. Selena on July 1st, 2009 9:55 pm

    ok, real guick,
PM dolls were sorta better. Then since M started taking over, the quality isn’t as good. I can literally squeeze beckie’s arms!
    ok, leaving!

  229. Lily on July 1st, 2009 10:37 pm

    I’m 5′8″ . . . taller than most people at AGP:

  230. Stephanie on July 1st, 2009 10:44 pm

    Anne,

I don’t prefer one entirely over the other, but rather different aspects of each. I like Kirsten and Kaitlyn(7)’s squishier PM bodies and limbs, and Felicity’s brighter Mattel face-paint and silky hair.

  231. Anne on July 2nd, 2009 12:10 am

I agree with you. I just got Lissie for my birthday (June 25) and she is gorgeous. I also have Kirsten(2003), Samantha(2005), and Nellie(2006). Kirsti, Sam, and Lissie all have the “classic” mold, but each one is different as the dolls (and their molds) further evolved over time. Also, my newer dolls have more face paint then my older ones do. It is neat to see the progression of the Mattel dolls over the span of 6 years.

  232. Taelyn on July 2nd, 2009 4:37 am

    Selena, I’m 5′3”! yay!
Good Morning Everyone! It’s 4:36! I have to go w/ to take my sis to the airport. Gosh I’ll have to watch her dog all week =[ it can be a pest!
I saw a pic on istockphoto of a girl with the ag star hoodie! i’ll have to send you guys the link!

  233. Taelyn on July 2nd, 2009 4:42 am
  234. priscilla on July 2nd, 2009 9:34 am

that’s cool taelyn! btw-i love your name! p.s.how tall are most of the people at ag place? iv never been there,i’m 4′6″,so would i be shorter or taller? i’m just wondering…

  235. Lily on July 2nd, 2009 10:03 am

There’s a bunch of little kids and a bunch of their parents, so you’d be fine. I just feel weird when I go because I’m taller than most everyone – including the parents.

  236. Sara on July 2nd, 2009 3:00 pm

Same here. But, I kno some one who is over 7 feet tall!!!!!!

  237. Taelyn on July 2nd, 2009 6:10 pm

Pricilla- thanks. Not many people have my name =]
Yeah, when I went to AGP, most people where shorter because their was a lot of little girls there, mostly like 7-9 year olds.

  238. Taelyn on July 2nd, 2009 6:10 pm

    sara- wow! thats really tall!

  239. priscilla on July 2nd, 2009 6:36 pm

    thanks taelyn. sarah,whoa! 7 feet?

  240. Sara on July 2nd, 2009 6:47 pm

    Somewhere around there!

Taelyn~ what dolls do u have? Don’t ask me, it’ll take a while! I have about 20 counting the Bittys!

  241. Taelyn on July 3rd, 2009 8:58 am

its easy for me to count.
    1- julie
lol! i’m going to agp (or is it bb) in miniapolis three weeks from now, so we’ll see. i might get a jlu.

  242. Zoe on July 3rd, 2009 9:00 am

i live in tx. isnt there an agp there? i dont know why we dont just go there… of course this miniapolis trip isnt just for ag =]

  243. Taelyn on July 3rd, 2009 9:03 am

whoops! im w/ a friend so i posted as her on accident. wowz. i slept over so yeah. she told me about this site. ^^

  244. Selena on July 3rd, 2009 11:44 am

    who??? Zoe???

ya, there’s one (bistro) in Downtown Dallas, near the airport. I go there when I can but it’s like 45 min away… That’s were I got november!! (AKA beckie)

  245. Taelyn on July 3rd, 2009 6:06 pm

yes. i was at her house, but now im back. shes kinda disconnected from ag right now.

im gonna take pics of my doll for the 4th

  246. alli on July 7th, 2009 8:33 pm

    whateverzezzzz

  247. Gracie on July 11th, 2009 9:38 pm

They should make a girl of the year doll who’s issue in her books is she is too self concious. At about the age of eleven girls start hating themselves and I think that American Girl should help girls find thier solution.

  248. Katie on July 14th, 2009 8:34 am

I have a pre-mattel Kirsten, too. I got her on Ebay without even knowing she was P-M.
