UPDATE 5/14/2012 - American Girl posted on their Facebook page today that the new historical character for 2012 will be named Caroline Abbott along with the image below:

And here is the cover of her craft book:

Obviously no photo of her but the flower basket is interesting.
UPDATED: We have a possible new clue… It has been rumored for a while that the new American Girl historical character will be named Caroline, but we have no official confirmation of that yet. According to the website, Goodreads, her name is Caroline. Again, we don’t know if they are just using a code name still, or what, but it is good to see some new clues.
Updated!! It’s official. There will be a new American Girl Historical character added in 2012. Like previous historical releases, the new doll looks like she will be debuting around September 1, 2012.
We now have the book titles for the American Girl Historical books by Kathleen Ernst.
- Meet Caroline! Book 1
- Caroline’s Secret Message – Book 2
- A Surprise for Caroline – Book 3
- Caroline Takes a Chance – Book 4
- Caroline’s Battle – Book 5
- Changes for Caroline – Book 6
Love those Doll Diaries sleuths – like Jenny – who find the coolest clues to American Girl scoop going!! Thank you.
According to the Transatlantic Literary Agency website, Kathleen Ernst has a set of 6 books in the works for American Girl to be released in 2012. How interesting!! And they are supposed to be historical – even more interesting!
Kathleen Ernst has authored many of the American Girl mysteries and has written other history-based stories for young adults. Some of her titles include:
- The Runaway Friend: A Kirsten Mystery (American Girl Mysteries)
- Danger At The Zoo: A Kit Mystery (American Girl Mysteries)
- Clues in the Shadows: A Molly Mystery (American Girl Mysteries)
Now, we just have to patiently wait for more clues as to who the new girl will be!

The story could honestly work for any time post-WWII, Cami.
Personally, I want a 1700s early 1800s girl.
Lena- they are pretty hard to find but I was lucky enough to find one at a consignment shop along with Felicity’s original clothes press.
Okay, so then if it is that unlikely because of Molly, I’m hoping for a 1960′s girl then. I still think she might be from the 50′s because of that story about the Closer Look Into AG.
I’ve been thinking about that. AG has been remaking old halloween costumes, right? What if the poodle skirt is a remake?
They should have adoll that lived threw 9-11. That also lost a family member.
^ That’s too recent.
Do they ever release them early in the stores? I am planning a trip for the last week of August so that would really stink if I miss it by one day?
Lisa- Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. MG and C were, but I don’t think Rebecca was.
after some research i think her name will be saba. i think think because saba was recently trademarked under doll, doll clothing, doll accessories. saba was a girl of many lands doll and Cecile was to, so maybe they will name another historical after a girl of many lands doll!!!!
I doubt it will be Saba. It doesn’t sound ‘American girl Historical’ to me.
And besides, the name Caroline is already at the first extension phase.
Jenny- What do you mean first extension phase?
Jenny- What do you mean first extension phase?
—————-
I don’t know what that means either, but it’s the current status on the name ‘Caroline’.
Maybe they’re doing something else with Saba?
Cami, I love the idea of your girl from Nashville who moved to Colorado (one of my favorite places). Great Idea! If that isn’t one of your best, I’d love to see the ideas you think are greater because they must be even more awesome
Dolls I have:
Katherine Jane (my first 18″ doll, Gotz)
Felicity Anne (Felicity)
Mary Elizabeth (Elizabeth)
I once had Jess and Molly, but I sold them both. I would really love a Josefina and would probably nickname her a colonial/ Jane Austen name like Josephine.
I also have heart to heart Delilah Caroline (Dell) and Nahji and some porcelain dolls.
I started collecting as a small child with Barbies and had over 300 before I started selling them. I probably have about 150 now.
Also from my childhood are handmade cabbage patch kids from my Granny, Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, Morton salt girl (my surname), Hollie Hobbie, Rainbow Brites, Jem dolls, and many more dolls I can’t remember!
Names of my porcelain dolls:
Welsh: Arianna Faith, Scottish: Flora Bella, Irish: Megan Kathleen, English: Charlotte Nichole, country doll: Jennifer Melissa , 4 ft tall brunette: Isabella, 2 ft tall brunette: Susannah
I also have two unnamed fairy porcelain dolls
Names of my 3 homemade and one original cabbage patch kids: William Joseph (Billy Joe), Amanda Grace, Leeanna Maria, and Nathan Christopher
I also have a very old doll given to me by “Auntie” that babysat me and I named her Sarah Rebecca, a baby porcelain named Sharon Elizabeth, a very old crying baby doll named Audrianna Rose, and an old vinyl doll on a stand I named Guenevere Rosamond. My walking dolls I had as a child I named Jane and Sally after the Dick and Jane book series.
I seemed to go through phases as a child and young adult: I liked country sounding names, Biblical names, romantic names, and names different countries.
Now, I like names from favorite stories: Emma Josephine because of Jane Austen’s Emma, Felicity Anne because of Anne of Green Gables, Mary Elizabeth because of my sister Mary and Mary Lennox of Secret Garden and so many more (and Elizabeth is a favorite name of mine and the name of Austen heroine Elizabeth Bennett), And Katherine Jane named after Jane Austen (and I’ve always loved the name Katherine).
I think that’s all of my named dolls, there may be more hiding around my cottage that I can’t remember at present.
i found a pic of mckennas dvd
I’ll try to think of a new idea soon to add.
*is still waiting for the century to reveal itself*
I know right Jenny! I really hope she is from the 1950′s or 1960′s.
I just hope she’s more ‘historical’ than MG and C!
Sarah I.- What site? I cant find it…..
Sarah I.- What site? I cant find it…..
It’s on the AG website. You go to the play section, then GotY and then you go to the McKenna page, and scroll all of the way down.
I am soooo excited for the new historical character to come out!!!
I’m so excited!!
I loved the Kirsten mystery, so her books will probably be really good too.. I’m really happy now.
can anyone tell me, if the doll is probaly coming out septemberish, do you think there will be more information released before that, or do we have no idea until the day she is released? thanks
Amie – I’m sure we will get hints along the way.
Yeah. We’ll most likely get more hints as time goes buy
I just hope she is unique! I WILL SCREAM IF WE GET ANOTHER DOLL THAT LOOKS JUST LIKE ANOTHER!!
I hope maybe Green or grey eyes, there are like no grey eyed dolls in AG anymore,
I’m sure she’ll be different.
I saw book release dates for 1 September 2012 listed online (which someone may have mentioned already). I have pre-ordered the books and mini doll through http://www.bookdepository.co.uk as the have a great price and free shipping.
I’m just hoping it will either be Cold War (1984) or War of 1812 (1814).
Rogue – I can’t confirm anything, but I have heard a few reports of 1812 – no way to substantiate it, just what I have heard.
I have too heard 1812, but mostly in the form of rumors.
As much as I think 1980s are too recent… a Cold War girl sound amazing. Actually, the Cold War started in the late 40s, but I do not want a 50s girl.
Since my younger girl is named Caroline, I am really hoping these rumors are true. I’m willing to order her sight unseen if that’s her name.
I searched up when the name was most popular. The numbers are where Caroline was ranked on the lists.
2001 (62), 1880 (75) and 1893 (99). All the rest of when Caroline was a popular name was in the 2000′s.
I kinda want a Medieval doll, or the Renaissance doll.
I love that name! i bet she’ll be a 1950′s doll this time:)
The problem with looking up names is that they only started cataloging them in 1880. So we have no way of knowing how popular it was before then.
I hope she’s either early USA or colonial.
I want a titanic doll. Her story could tell before the titanic during and after.
Can’t wait!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope the doll is super pretty!
Personally, I hope she’s from the South. There’s not a doll from deep south states like Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, or even Texas. It’d be pretty neat for a Civil Rights doll from a place like Montgomery, AL. But I prefer one from like early 1800s, or late 1700s.
^Louisiana is deep south. And Lissie is technically from the south, as Virginia is considered that. I’m hoping for a Floridian girl though, or an AA girl in the 50s from Alabama.
It’d also be nice to have a farmer type girl. As a girl from the south myself with a farm, it’d be very nice.
^That’s not a bad idea. With Kirsten gone, there’s no one to represent life on the farm
I forgot about Kirsten! It would be a good fit. Early 1800′s life on a farm would be very nice.
Holly – I was thinking the same thing with a farm girl but it’d probably not be in late 1800 bc the MG & C is from 1853 and Kirsten (retired ) is from 1854 and I always thought JOSEFINA ( sorry for all
Caps in the name it’s my iPod it won’t let me spell her name because of autocorrect will change the name to other words ) was a farmer because she lives on a rancho
Josefina’s family mainly dealt in livestock, while Kirsten’s family grew grains and veggies. I was thinking veggie farmer, since people who raise livestock are not usually called farmers.
Autocorrect is the bane of my existance. Not only because a pet peeve of mine is spelling it “Josephina” but also because I can’t use big words or type in other languages.
Lena – good point she does raise live stock but I think farmer doll
Is great because of kirstens retirement in 2009
I agree. Even you call Josefina a farmer, that’s still 2 of 12 (counting friends its 2 out of 18) are farmers, when 90% of the population pre-1900 (actually WWI) lived on farms.
