Last fall one of my son’s closest friends was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 14. She is such an amazing young lady who plays soccer, volleyball, swims, acts and is super smart, too. It was one of the hardest things ever to see someone so young having to deal with all the treatment, losing her hair, and fighting her battle against cancer. When I went to Toy Fair in February, I was able to visit the MGA showroom and got to see their new line of True Hope Moxie and Bratz dolls up close. The True Hope line of dolls is MGA’s answer to the public’s request for Mattel to make a Barbie who is hairless. MGA acted on the public request where Mattel shut them down.
In May, our friend completed her chemotherapy and two weeks later she was playing in a soccer tournament. She is truly one of the most amazing girls I know! So, when I found out that the True Hope dolls were going to be available at Toys R Us in June, I pre-ordered a few. I ordered one for Katie, one for my dear friend who treats cancer patients every day, and two for our doll collection.
Meet Avery! She is one of the True Hope Moxie dolls. She comes with two outfits and a little knitted cap to keep her head warm. One of the things our friend Katie did so well as she was fighting cancer, was to embrace her new look. She is stunningly gorgeous anyhow, but she wore different hats and scarves and sometimes wigs almost everyday and she rocked each and every look.
Here is Avery without her hat. She is such a cutie!! Oh my! We just adore her. My friend is going to take her Avery doll to the radiation center with her when she goes to work. She knows her patients will love it.
And if you are wondering where Avery got her cool car, we had lunch at a restaurant called Cheeburger Cheeburger yesterday and the cars came with the kids meals. It is the perfect size for Avery and her friends.
Stay tuned for more photos and I will introduce you to True Hope Bratz doll Yazmin later in the weekend.

Firstie!!!
That is awesome! It’s so sad that mattel turned down a request like that.
sencondy!!!
how nice i saw those at toysrus i think thats great that they are making those!!
I’m glad they make dolls like that.
Aww…That’s so cute and kind! I have the Avery doll (But the normal one with hair), and I can tell that she would look beautiful in any king of look! Char – May I take a picture of my Avery doll and send it to you?
Of course Maggie
thats so sad
i hope that we can fight cancer. i have a scary story. when i was in 1st grade i had a knee problem. i couldnt walk for weeks or even go to school. i went to this special hospital and they had thought i had cancer. i was practicaly screaming my head off- being scared. finally they did this expiriement. i didnt have it- i had this virus. a very odd one they had never seen before. i dont know what its called but its weird. i have somthing wrong with my belly- but i dont like to talk about it. thios is very kind to make these dollls because all of us are diffrent!
Saw these at the local TRU yesterday and they are so cute. I think it’s a great thing they are doing to raise awareness.
cool!!!! :0)
I’m actually kind of annoyed about these dolls. Yes, I appreciate what MGA is doing in raising awareness, but was only 1/3 of the campaign to get a bald doll. There were 2 other diseases, one of which I have, that are not as represented in media as cancer that also cause baldness. I’m disapointed they are only focusing on the one everyone knows about.
That said, I own a May, to honor a friend who had cancer.
Lena – I agree that MGA did not hit the mark 100% however, they were much more willing to move on the concept than Mattel was and brought a product to the market in a short amount of time. While our friend was in the hospital they gave her a Make a Wish Barbie that had super long blonde hair – this was one week after her own hair started falling out. She says she can relate to the True Hope Yasmin much more and it is a symbol of what she has conquered.
^I can agree with that. Mattel repeatedly refused, and though I can understand why no bald AG (they have a flat portion of head under the wig), no bald Barbie baffles me. I think what MGA is doing is great, and the next time I vistit Poland I plan to bring my grandma (who collects dolls) one of these since she has cancer and her hair is falling out.
That is so sweet. To tell the honest truth, I actually like the Moxie dolls better without their hair. Also, I have gone to that restaurant before! It’s really cool. I love seeing the huge hambuger that you can eat to get your picture on the wall.
she is so cute amd im glad that mattel made these dolls.
These dolls are much cuter without the hair!
Oh, and I’m on my moms phone so my gravatar is different.
I lost my mom to stomach cancer almost 3 years ago. I’m glad these dolls are being made to ease the pain of little girls going through similar experiences!
My mom was part of the act on facebook where you posted things on Mattells page for cancer dolls. It’s a great doll for a great cause.
Though, I’ve never heard of Cheeburger Cheeburger.
i really like that they are doing this. last year my second grade teacher died from cancer. i really like that they are thinking about all those cancer people. sometimes it gets annoying when people go on and on about their hair. hair really isnt THAT important.
Sharry~i am really with you. also, my second grade teacher had a 10 year old girl. it was a really sad time for her, and still is.
and my aunt passed away a few weeks ago from cancer.
agisthebest- I’m sorry about your aunt and everyone else who has been lost to cancer. A few months ago, my mom’s uncle died to cancer. Also, the teacher who had taught me in the school play was diagnosed with cancer and died within a week. These are great dolls, and I am ashamed that Mattel won’t make a bald Barbie.
Oh and I LOVE Cheeburger Cheeburger!
emma-thank you for being so kind. i am also ashamed that mattel wont make a bald barbie. that really depresses me.
So beautiful! My friend’s sister was diagnosed with cancer a while ago she had sugery and survived but lost her hair. She was in 3rd grade! It’s beautiful MGA is doing this!
Also, I LOVE CHEEBURGER CHEEBURGER!!! We have like 5 cars from there that I put my barbies and bratz in!
Also agree, such a shame! Seriously Mattel, would it be so hard to make a bald doll! Cabcer is real and children need to be aware of it!
So wait in 2002 mattel makes a pregnant barbie and gets negative attetion for it ( very small wedding ring on the doll ) but there becomes a whole facebook page for a bald barbie for which if they made would recive good attetion and they don’t! what is up with that !
If anyone wants a bald 18 inch doll the website sewable has them and they have dolls the removable legs because “they where in car acidents” the even have 18 inch boy dolls
oh moxie girl dolls that avery doll must be the cancer version of the avery doll i have that has hair.
I just checked out the pregnant barbies on ebay and now i don’t understand why pregnant barbies recieved bad attention, maybe back then people didn’t like dolls that looked wierd
What if American girl made a girl of the year that had cancer does anyone think she would
Serena and Alicia, i hade the pregnant Madge doll when I was little. I had no idea thete was an uproar about it. I had her husband and son though, along with grandma and grandpa (they also had wedding rings) I loved her and she was one of my favorites.
So sweet
This is so inspiring.
KT, I dont think AG would…
but we can always hope
Kt- They might, but they’d probably have her have really short hair instead of being bald.
This is really sweet and I’m glad they did that!
what was that doll line of 4 dolls called that you could buy at justice
Ashely – there is a new set called Novi Stars coming out.
