Karen here. October is one of my most favorite months, fall colors, pumpkins, candy and Halloween! Every year I am a witch. I love being a witch, a crafty witch that is! I also have a small collection of Witch Hats that I wear on Halloween and dress the backs of our chairs with! This year I made Ivy a Felt Witches hat with a veil like one of my most favorite witch hats from my collection. Today I am going to show you how to make one just like Ivy’s!

To make your own you will need:

  • 2 pieces of Kunin Felt any color! Your hat doesn’t have to be black!
  • Glue Gun or Aleeen’s Fabric Fusion Tape
  • Tulle or Netting Scraps
  • Scissors
  • A Small Plate
  • Pen or white crayon
  • Your Doll

Step 1- Assemble all your supplies.  At the edge of your felt piece place your plate upside down so that the bottom edge is along the middle of the plate. Use a pen or crayon to trace the half circle. Then use your scissors to cut out your half circle.

Step 2- If using your glue gun plug it in and heat it up, if you are using your Aleene’s Fabric Fusion Tape add a long strip along the straight edge of your felt half circle. Press it into place and peel back the backing from the side not touching the felt and press your straight edges together. Your Hat will look like a cone party hat. Set it aside.

Step 3-  On your other piece of felt place the plate this time on the middle of your felt and use your pen or crayon to trace your circle shape. Remove the place and cut out your circle.

Step 4 – Fold your circle in half, and then in half again so you have a point as shown in the photo above. Make a cut about 2.5 inches down from the point. This will create the opening of your hat brim. Try the circle brim on your dolls head if it is not wide enough carefully trim the circle until it fits snugly but nicely over your dolls hair.

Step 5- Hold your cone hat and open it place it on the table. Use your Aleene’s Fabric Fusion Tape and line the bottom rim of your cone hat and then put the hat brim circle over the cone hat as shown above. If you are using hot glue just place the brim over your hat cone and you will glue in the next step.

Step 6- Slide the brim circle up the cone hat slightly to remove the backing of the Aleen’s Fabric Fusion Tape then slide the brim back down and fold that bottom edge of your cone hat under the brim of your now completed hat shape. If you are using hot glue, slide the brim up slightly add a line of glue and slide the brim back down and secure into place with more glue under the brim.

To create the veil for your Witches Hat simply choose twice the length of veil or netting you think you will need and fold it in half.  Then tie a knot in the tulle or netting at the fold, this creates a “rosette” look in the tulle, You can continue to tie a few more knots or add some Aleene’s Fashion Fusion Tape and stick it to your hat where you want it to cover your dolls face as I have. You can create more “rosettes” with left over tulle or netting and glue them into place with your glue gun or Aleen’s Fashion Fusion Tape.

Did you hear that the Doll Diaries Halloween Parade kicks off on Saturday, October 24? There will be prizes – and one of the prize categories will be Best Costume Inspired by a Doll Diaries Tutorial!! I hope I see some of these witches hats in the parade.
