Reader Showcase: Knitted Hat, Sweater and Toy for Dolls

knitted-doll-clothesI love to see the crafty, creative side of our readers!  One of our readers, Quinlyn, sent in a photo of her Julie modeling some of the items she has knitted. I wanted to know more, so I asked Quinlyn a few questions about her creations:

Q: What patterns did you use or did you make your own?

A: The hat pattern came from Lion Brand Yarn, the ball pattern came from a knitting book I have, and the sweater pattern I got online, but I can’t remember where.

Q: What is the easiest piece to start with?

A: The easiest piece would have to be a scarf. They are pretty but simple!

Q: What would you tell our readers who want to knit things for their dolls but have never tried?

A: Knitting something for your dolls can be hard, but it is very enjoyable and worthwhile. I highly recommend knitting, so go down to your local craft store and pick up those needles, search for a pattern, and sit down and knit. You will feel so good when the thing you have been working on comes off the needles and you put it on your doll.

For more ideas check out all these doll clothes patterns. And as always, we love to showcase our readers dolls and their talents – send your photos to share at dolldiaries.com and we’ll add them here!

hi wow this is my first time on the website and that’s a beautiful outfit!

  6. Lily on July 31st, 2009 5:36 pm

I probably wouldn’t have the patience to knit. If there are My Twinn knit or crochet patterns out there, I might suddenly feel like it :)

  7. Lily on July 31st, 2009 5:36 pm

I love your work, Quinlyn! That’s a very pretty name too.

  8. sunbeemz on July 31st, 2009 6:24 pm

    I love it!

  9. Abby on July 31st, 2009 9:01 pm

Awesome! BTW, I decided I’m getting the………………… drum roll……………….. THE AFRICAN AMERICAN BITTY BABY!! thanks to my fellow friends at Doll Diaries!! I’m still debating whether her name will be….. Esther or Madison??

  10. Abby on July 31st, 2009 9:08 pm

Looky here! I was on ag playthings and look what I found about the Lindsey doll! “Now, sellers in the secondary market are making clones and rewigging other dolls in order to meet the high collector demand of the product. To learn more about clones and counterfeits offered in the secondary market and how to identify them log in to many of the collectors forums avaiable on the web today.” Ugh! I don’t know about you, but to me, that sounds just awful!

  11. Lilly Hazel on July 31st, 2009 9:22 pm

yea, I’v been looking for a Lindsey doll for 4 monthes and only just bought her.
I’v seen some of the clones on eBay that are Nicki dolls with there wigs torn off.

  12. Lily on July 31st, 2009 9:25 pm

It’s kind of funny how on eBay some sellers advertise their $400 Lindseys as never removed from box when the dolls have obviously been played with, complete with messed up hair.

  13. Sara on July 31st, 2009 11:19 pm

Any1 see the new link I posted?

  14. Lily on August 1st, 2009 7:58 am

    No.

  15. Lena on August 1st, 2009 8:24 am

Yes, they do make counterfiet Lindseys. I’ve also seen some fakie Addy’s and any doll with the original mold. Usually, you can tell by the skin being way too shiny and the big buggy eyes.

  16. Lily on August 1st, 2009 10:30 am

Fake AG dolls are dolls are very easy to spot … the counterfeit Lindseys are real AG dolls with blue eyes that are given new wigs an freckles.

  17. Lily on August 1st, 2009 10:45 am

    *and*

  18. Lena on August 1st, 2009 10:51 am

The real one had faded freckles and bangs. Some of the counterfiets I’ve seen had ery dark freckles and/or no bangs.

  19. Lily on August 1st, 2009 11:43 am

Click on my name for a prime example of a “never removed from her box” Lindsey that has gone through the wringer.

If I wanted a Lindsey, I would just find an acceptable blue-eyed doll, remove her wig, and mess her face up enough so that you couldn’t tell that she’s supposed to have freckles, and send her into the doll hospital for a new head.

  20. Lena on August 1st, 2009 11:53 am

No, you couldn’t. The dolls hae some sort of tag on the inside that tells them what doll you have. A wigless, blue eyed, frckled doll will come back with her own wig, not Lindsey’s.

  21. Lily on August 1st, 2009 12:12 pm

Where is the tag? I always wondered how the people at the doll hospital were able to discern which doll is which when a kid has wreaked havoc on the doll. If you rip the tag off . . .

  22. Lena on August 1st, 2009 12:21 pm

I’m not sure if its a actuall tag. It may just be a number stamped into the vinyl of the head. I’ve personally never seen this “tag”.

  23. Lena on August 1st, 2009 12:22 pm

Also, they refuse to “operate” on dolls that have been tampered with (eye swaps, wig swaps, etc…)

  24. Lily on August 1st, 2009 12:28 pm

So if you gave Felicity a new wig, but then sent her in for a new head, they wouldn’t do it? Why? In faux-Lindsey cases, I understand.

  25. Lena on August 1st, 2009 1:23 pm

No, they wouldn’t, and how should I know?

  26. Lily on August 1st, 2009 1:32 pm

You seem to know an awful lot about everything. That’s how.

I started selling on eBay! It’s fun to be making money for once. None of my auctions have ended yet, but it’s going well.

  27. Lena on August 1st, 2009 2:00 pm

I sold all my old books and legos on eBay. Your right, making money without haing to do work is fun.

I know an awful lot about everything because I’m a member of an adult collecting site.

  28. Lily on August 1st, 2009 2:10 pm

I’m thinking about making my own My Twinn patterns, sewing outfits and making matching shoes, then selling them on eBay. It might be fun.

  29. Lily on August 1st, 2009 2:11 pm

This site moderates the most random things.

  30. Aaryana on August 1st, 2009 2:48 pm

It makes me sad that people take advantage of the LE dolls like that, but I’m not surprised. :(

  31. pioneerfan04 on August 1st, 2009 3:15 pm

quinlyn! it’s pioneerfan04 from samantha and her sisters’ extraordinary blog! that’s a great outfit!

  32. pioneerfan04 on August 1st, 2009 3:18 pm

abby i think that you should name the bitty baby esther because if you get/own addy then you can make the bitty baby addy’s baby sister!

  33. sunbeemz on August 1st, 2009 5:09 pm

    Thats a good idea Pioneerfan04!

  34. Zoe on August 1st, 2009 5:26 pm

Abby, this is eerie. I was looking at my old post for exactly a year a go and this is what I posted:

“Hey guys. I don’t know about you, but to me, that sounds just awful!”

    SOOO freaky!

  36. sunbeemz on August 1st, 2009 7:03 pm

  37. Lily on August 1st, 2009 7:16 pm

If it makes you feel any better, Sunbeemz, I got my package (Julie, Rebecca, their accessories, Kirsten b-day, Rebecca movies, Julie swimsuit) nearly a month ago and I don’t get to open it until Wednesday.

How hard is it to knit AG stuff? Is it easier than crochet?

  38. Sara on August 1st, 2009 9:50 pm

Yay! I’m so excited to go to the Mall of America with my sister tomorrow! We’re gonna go to the Boutique!!!

  55. pioneerfan04 on August 2nd, 2009 4:55 pm

    al

  61. Sara on August 2nd, 2009 5:19 pm

pioneerfan~ they even have a museum (or part of one) dedicated 2 the show! It sux that Michael Landon had 2 die!!! :(

  62. Sara on August 2nd, 2009 5:21 pm

I suggest Chrissa cause she’s only here 4 a year. U can get Julie anytime.

  63. sunbeemz on August 2nd, 2009 5:23 pm

Lol sorry if I was confusing…..

  64. sunbeemz on August 2nd, 2009 5:27 pm

I suggest Chrissa because I have Julie and shes great for hairstyles and all but I’m not to happy about everything else.

  65. Sara on August 2nd, 2009 5:29 pm

My mom said that Michael came 2 her hometown during his Little Joe fame! Lucky!! She said she wasn’t too brave then 2 go up and try 2 get an autograph!!

  66. Lena on August 2nd, 2009 5:38 pm

My dad met Micheal Jackson in the early 90’s, and Janet Jakson at the Superbowl (he was there for fun)

  67. Lena on August 2nd, 2009 5:39 pm

Al, I suggest Chrissa. I have her (after hateing her for months because she was “too plain”). She’s a very pretty doll in person (Char has pics of her on here, if it helps decide) and looks amaing in everything i’ve put her into.

  68. sunbeemz on August 2nd, 2009 5:44 pm

I loooooooooove michael jackson! And he was very cute when he was still dark!

  69. sunbeemz on August 2nd, 2009 5:48 pm

I won’t be on for a while so by for now!

  70. Sara on August 2nd, 2009 6:13 pm

I was talking about Michael Landon. Sry if that sounded mean!

  71. sunbeemz on August 2nd, 2009 6:25 pm

Yea I know you were talking about Michael Landon You didn’t sound mean.

  72. Sara on August 2nd, 2009 8:07 pm

Thnx. Everyone was talking about Michael Jackson. That’s why I said that.

  73. Hayden on August 2nd, 2009 8:26 pm

OMG IM SO TOTALLY HAPPY RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, so I was on eBay and I saw a Josefina. she was cheap so I watched her. P.S. srry same message I had my friends name on!!

  75. Lily on August 2nd, 2009 9:08 pm

In my opinion, Bitty Babies and Twins are overrated. I know some people beg to differ, but I mean, they’re for 3 year-olds. C’mon. Congrats on getting Josefina, Abby! She’s one of the next dolls on my list, somewhere around Addy and the GOTY 2010 (if I like her).

  76. Lena on August 2nd, 2009 9:26 pm

Meh, Bitties are OK themselves…. its the clothes I love. And the girl AA twins hair.

  77. Lily on August 2nd, 2009 9:35 pm

I don’t want an AA Bitty. I want an AA GOTY. The MT I’m getting right now is a gorgeous AA. She’s perfect! That’s a lot of acronyms right there :P

  78. Lena on August 2nd, 2009 9:47 pm

I just want that wig. Too bad Bitty wigs are too big for regular 18inchers….

  79. Lily on August 2nd, 2009 10:08 pm

I guess you think of American Girl dolls in term of wigs and eye colors, huh? That’s how I am with My Twinn since they’re the ultimate customizable doll. For American Girl, I like to keep them in their original forms because of their books and such.

I got my ancient sewing machine to work! It’s from the 1960s but it runs great. Now I’m going to buy patterns so I can sew outfits for the Twinns and maybe my 22″ Apple Valley doll.

  80. Lena on August 2nd, 2009 10:13 pm

No, I don’t. The characters themselves I think of as the character…. unless I have the doll and think the book doesn’t look like the doll and I got her early enough that I didn’t get used to calling her by her “real” name. If this makes sense.

Now, JLY…. lets just say I wish they were more like MyTwinns.

  81. Lily on August 2nd, 2009 10:42 pm

Yeah, that makes sense. That’s why you were calling Chrissa “Emma” on the day you got her. I like the name Emma much better than Chrissa. It’s a classic. And Gwen should’ve been Lily. I think those are great names for this year’s trio: Emma, Lily, and Sonali!

Yes, I also wish JLY dolls were more like My Twinns. It’s probably a good thing that they’re not because then My Twinn couldn’t compete. They’ve gone out of business twice in the past 6 years and each time it takes awhile for them to get back up on their feet again. Their new website should be up tomorrow with new products … the first in an entire year. I’m rooting for them.

The creativity you have with Twinns is a nice change from AG, where each doll has a specific story, name, and wardrobe. JLY doesn’t even count. They have no-name looks and the choices are very limited when you buy directly from AG.

  82. Lena on August 3rd, 2009 7:05 am

If I ever get a JLY, she’ll be historical. Even the 25 I had was always wearing Kit’s clothes.

Know what’s sad? We came up with better names for Chrissa and Gwen than AG did. Or at least I like them better.

  83. Abby on August 3rd, 2009 8:34 am

    Umm….. kinda ignoring me here…..

  84. Abby on August 3rd, 2009 8:35 am

Throw it at meh. i will hear the names.

  85. Abby on August 3rd, 2009 8:36 am

Ohhh Lena I just saw that post… thanks.

  86. Lily on August 3rd, 2009 8:42 am

I completely agree, Lena. Lily and Emma are much better names than Chrissa and Gwen. You never see 10 year-olds with their real names. Ever.

  87. Abby on August 3rd, 2009 8:51 am

O nvm, emma is a great name. when I think “Chrissa” I think “Clarisse” which is old fashioned. and sometthing with her dress I don’t like, her hairstyles nice, I like her chracter but thwt dress? to…. plain? to short?

Anyway, I’m so excitid that Josefina could be here by Wednesday!!! ok, and know for the best part I’ve been dreaming of….. drum roll……. I HAVE ALL 4 FORGOTTON 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and I’ve only been saving money for a week LOL!!!

And here comes the bad part. I’m just gonna hrow it at you. I…..USED……MY…… OWN MONEY………… my wallet is starving.

I love Josie and she’ll brkng joy and the cukture of the hispanic to my American girl family furever!!!!!

  88. Lena on August 3rd, 2009 8:57 am

Hehe… Josie. I think that’s funny sounding if you use the Spanish way of saying Josefina.

Also, her dress isn’t very short. Its actually knee length.

    Congrats on her though Abby.

  89. Holly on August 3rd, 2009 8:59 am

Elizabeth should be here today!!! Yay!!

  90. Abby on August 3rd, 2009 9:09 am

    Thts gud!

  91. Lily on August 3rd, 2009 9:28 am

I guess you have forgotton to brkng your gud grammar. Ah, furever 12 year-old cukture ;)

  92. Lena on August 3rd, 2009 9:52 am

Hey, grammar on here matters not. If she want to use chatspeak, she can!

  93. Sitara on August 3rd, 2009 10:32 am

What’s wrong with the name Gwen? (sorry if it sounds mean, but I like the name). I like Emma a lot though. If I had an Emma her name would be short for Emmeline though ;) which would defeat the purpose of being modern, but my moderns often time-travel.

  94. Lena on August 3rd, 2009 10:47 am

I know a little gril named Emmaline…. that’s what Chrissa’s new name is, Emmaline du Buois.

I like the name Gwen, but it doesn’t really sound like something a modern 10 year old would be called.

  95. Lily on August 3rd, 2009 10:54 am

Exactly. Gwen is not a modern name at all. I’ve heard of the name, but I’ve never met a kid with it. On the Social Security Administration’s website, Gwen hasn’t been one of the top 1,000 popular girls names since 1981, wheras it made the list every year from 1901 – 1981. What does that tell you? IMO, it’s not even a pretty name. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: it sounds like an old lady with a bunch of cats. No offense to anyone who likes it.

  96. Anne on August 3rd, 2009 11:46 am

Hi guys! I haven’t been on in some time because I had no access to a computer on the first and the second. My vacation has officially started! I am at my aunt and uncle’s house now. Sorry for any spelling mistakes…

  97. Anne on August 3rd, 2009 11:46 am

I didn’t know that Gwen used to be such a popular name.

  98. Lily on August 3rd, 2009 11:51 am

It never really was that popular. If I remember correctly, it was only ever about the 350th most common girl name.

  99. Sara on August 3rd, 2009 12:08 pm

I agree that Chrissa and Gwen are old fashioned names, but I still like the dolls. No offense 2 any1!

  100. Lena on August 3rd, 2009 12:24 pm

I’m in love with my Emma, but Gwen’s pretty average. She looks just like JLY 12.

And Chrissa I believe is a modern name.

  101. Lily on August 3rd, 2009 12:25 pm

I never said it was an old lady name like Gwen ;) (which there is proof of)

  102. sunbeemz on August 3rd, 2009 1:34 pm

I found QVC but I don’t know the right time to watch it!

  103. Holly on August 3rd, 2009 4:06 pm

    Ugh, Elizabeth still hasn’t came. I guess tomorrow… :(

  104. Lena on August 3rd, 2009 4:15 pm

Hey, Holly, did you test for yellow belt yet?

  105. sunbeemz on August 3rd, 2009 5:14 pm

Sonali should be here Wednesday! I just finished doing an cute hairstyle on Julie it looks like a fishtail.

  106. Shannon on August 3rd, 2009 7:12 pm

  109. priscilla on August 3rd, 2009 8:32 pm

i knitted a pink scarf one time for my barbie doll, but i’ve never tried it for my ag dolls,i’m gonna try it! :)

  110. Anne on August 3rd, 2009 8:59 pm

Is there another Anne on here?

  111. Holly on August 5th, 2009 3:04 pm

  112. Sara on August 5th, 2009 8:57 pm

    Good luck Holly!!
