One of our Doll Diaries community members, Kristen, was lucky enough to get Julie’s Egg Chair the day it came out and has been kind enough to take photos and send her review to us to enjoy!

When I first saw this chair online, I couldn’t wait to see it in stores (and to have Ivy to lounge in it). Recently I went to the BeForever launch at the American Girl Store in San Francisco/Bay Area (Palo Alto). They had this on display and Ivy really enjoyed it. I was given permission to get this, (and Ivy was thrilled), so here is the review!
Julie’s egg chair set comes with the chair, the ottoman, a sheet of stickers to decorate, and the cable to play music from a music player or music playing device. You can see Ivy sitting in it (with my phone plugged in), the chair & ottoman, and the backside of the chair, decorated with the sticker sheet.
In this collage you can see the inside of the chair, with a soft bright orange polyester material, and velcro on the cushion (detachable). The speakers are on either side of the doll’s head (sitting down).
This is a closeup of the back with the battery compartment (takes 3 AA batteries, not included), volume adjuster, and the socket for the cable (to connect).
The ottoman is an orange plastic, with the same soft bright orange polyester material. It has feet on the bottom to stand.
In case you were wondering, the chair is about 6.5 inches in depth and 17 inches tall.
Overall, the this set is a bit overpriced ($100), but it is a great piece of furniture to add to any dollhouse/room/space. On the scale of 1-10, I would rate this a 9.

Thanks again Kristen! Does anyone else have this piece already? What do you think of it? If not, is it on your wish list?
I want to get it, but it’s not on the top of my list, so it’ll have to wait for a while.
I wanna figure out a way to make this, (maybe paper mache’ over a giant balloon). Although I love the piece, there are 2 things I don’t like about it. 1) The price: $100 seems a little high for a glorified speaker, and 2) I don’t like that it has to be hooked up to an IPod or MP3, or smart phone. I don’t have any of these devices, but even if I did, I don’t think that’s very historical. I thought the idea for this stuff was to teach girls something about history. Well, there were no digital devices in the 70s. I think it would have been better to put several buttons on the back that you could push to play various 70s songs. Hey, they did it for the record player, right? And I guess they’re gonna phase out Julie’s sound accessories, b/c why would she need a stereo egg chair, and a record player and a tape player? Anyway, that’s my take.
I think it’s cool, but I won’t get it at the $100.00 price! Why does AG put those big tags right where it’s visible? I have the Nola desk and if the doll is not sitting in it, It sticks out like a sore thumb. I just bought Julie and the giant tag is attached to her shoe in a way that looks like she visited the ladies room and left with toilet paper stuck to her shoe!
@ Linda Reynolds : LOLOLOLOL!
Sharry, I also was thinking of making the egg chair but I’ll let you do it and you can show us how!
Our owner likes this chair a lot, but it does seem a bit overpriced..

@Sharry , you can plug it in to anywhere you can plug in headphones, like your computer or TV or old-school Walkman. If you go older-school, like a record player, you might need some sort of adapter, but Radio Shack can hook you up.
Around Easter, might there be Styrofoam or floral foam egg shapes, that could be carved to be the egg chair and covered in something (duct tape, maybe?) to give it the chair look? Craft stores are bound to have something around then.
@ Marjorie, not all jacks are the same size. A walkman might work, (but you’d have to take it w/ you to the store to find out. I may do this, just to inform anyone who is as old school as I am). But really, for the money you’re paying, why should you have to hook up anything at all? In my opinion, it should be all inclusive.
It’s way to expensive, just like EVERYTHING American Girl these days.
Super cute! I personally would have no use for it, but I think it is adorable!

I love Julie’s egg chair and I have added it to my collection. I love Julie and I can relate to her because I wore the same clothes in the 70’s. I have most of her collection, so when I saw the egg chair, I bought it. That said, I do agree that it is a bit pricey. Also, as said previously we did not have digital devices in the 70’s. With the introduction of beforever we moved away from everything being historical and put a modern touch on it by connecting a digital device. I think that this was added to increase sales. Since a Walkman was popular during the 70’s, I think it would have been better if Julie had non-working headphones like the Walkman had. Then Julie would look 70’s and young girls today could still listen to their music.
I agree with Sharry. Until Mattel stops marketing BeForever as “historical”, for me, BeForever will forever be wrong.
I want to make it clear, that it’s not that I don’t like BeForever. In fact, I do like it. But it’s not w/o its faults. The egg chair is one of those faults. To me, you may as well have a plain egg chair and play your digital music player in the dock in your room, b/c it serves the same purpose. If you can play whatever music you want in the egg chair, it’s not really 70s. If AG could get the licenses for record player songs, then how much harder would it have been to get licenses for KC & The Sunshine Band or Barry Manilow (as mentioned in the Journey book) and put that music in the chair?
I think Julie’s egg chair is totally awesome! Would love to have one in adult size! : )
Kristen, thanks for the review and photos.
Thank you very much, Kristen, for your comments and photos—I reallly appreciate being able to see the new products this way.
I think that the egg chair is a cute idea, but like Sharry’s idea of having buttons on the back that would play 70’s songs—that would be groovy!
I’m also glad to see that the Beforever line is producing some furniture pieces for the historical line—I had been afraid that these would disappear altogether. Not that I really have room for more doll furniture. However, having said that, I wonder does anyone have Samantha’s bicycle and, if so, what do you think of it?
Search internet for “Ikea bowl doll chair” for how to make a chair like this. It was for 14″ fashion dolls, so bowl must be at least 12″ in diameter for seated 18″ doll. Going to dollar store to measure bowls & see what they have for a base. Michael’s may have had a picture frame with a similar base. Wish me luck!
I need that chair!
This piece is cool, but a little too bulky and expensive. I also think the speakers look weird, so no, it’s not on my wish list.
I have this chair, and I love it! Using a $10 off $100 coupon helped!
Cute, but not really my thing.I like her bed better.
Its cute but to expensive for my taste, great review!
Thanks for the feedback! I actually got it that Saturday, since I was too busy Thursday and Friday.
Sharry- Thye probably did that because well, most 9-12 year olds don’t like seventies music and want their dolls to lsiten to their music.
I would rather pay $100 for a real egg chair that I could lounge in. Great review, though 🙂
I don’t have it, but it’s definitely at the top of my wish list! Thanks for the review, Kirsten. =)
Interesting Irene. That’s something to consider.
I first thought it looked like Mork’s egg spaceship from Mork And Mindy:P.
I like the way you think, Irene, Kristen and Sharry! I’d love to see what you all create.
I think it’s horribly overpriced, I think it would have been better to have made it as just a chair and lowered the price. AG is getting a bit out of control with the prices of things, this is a great example. Not many people can afford some of this stuff.
ROFL @ the toilet paper visual Linda Reynolds!
I could use one of these chairs for me! But where would I put it……. 🙂
Wow AG. Too many tags! Lol besides that I love this egg chair, thanks for the photos Kristin!
I would love to get this set because I have Julie and want to try and get as much as I can from her collection
It looks awesome, but it’s too expensive for me.
