UPDATED! It’s official – Kirsten IS being archived!! If you visit the Kirsten page on the American Girl website you see her archive announcement:
While I have not been able to substantiate this rumor completely, supposedly some people have already received letters from American Girl stating that Kirsten will be archived soon. Funny, this is about the time we found out last year that Samantha was being archived.
Now I have my own theory. I think American Girl is archiving some of the original historical characters now so that come time for the 25th anniversary of American Girl, they can re-release special 25th Anniversary editions of the dolls.
I’m sure we will get more details over the next few weeks. If you had started Kirsten’s collection, you may want to work on finishing it up now or look to get the missing items from your Kirsten collection on eBay later.
If you have received a letter from American Girl or have seen real evidence that American Girl is retiring Kirsten – at least for now – please send it in! You know the email: share@dolldiaries.com.
Here is the letter that was sent out:

We’re writing with important news about one of the original American Girl Dolls- Kirsten Larson® . We wanted you, one of her biggest fans, to be among the first to know that soon, Kirsten’s complete collection will be moving into the American Girl Archives. Like you, countless American Girl fans have found a friend in this brave pioneer girl since her introduction in 1986. Bringing Kirsten’s world to life- from starting at a new school in a strange land to celebrating her family’s time-honored traditions on St. Lucia’s Day- has been a journey we’ve enjoyed sharing with you.
As we bid Kirsten® a fond farewell, we do so knowing her departure will make it possible to introduce new characters and time periods for our customers to enjoy.
Watch for more information in our catalogues and at americangirl.com. In the meantime, don’t miss the opportunity to purchase items from Kirsten’s collection before it’s too late. Thank you again for your continued support.

Keanna you can look into some of the non AG doll clothes sites. Many of them sell cowgirl outfits. Or you can try eBay. I’ve seen some adorable OOAK cowgirl outfits on there.

I’m so excited! My parents aniversy is tomorrow! I’m so happy!
Uhhhhh just as I was thinking that mattel was doing a good job with ag they go off and archieve Kirsten. She was the next doll I want!! Know I want her and all of her stuff and I doubt that’ll happen cuz last Christmas I got Nellie and all her stuff and the stuff I didn’t have for Samantha, that was left. I really don’t like mattel taking over. At first I was okay with it. Then in 2006-2007 they started to retire like half the stuff from all of the historicals, especially the forgoton four. I really wish pleasant rowland hadn’t sold ag to mattel, or to anyone for that matter. I understand she wanted to do other stuff but she should have a say in what mattel does and not just sit back and watch what they are doing. They shouldn’t have to retire a doll to come out with a new one. I just don’t get mattel, the historicals are suppost to be the heart of ag (as pleasant rowland said and I totally believe her and agree with her cuz THEY WERE, the historicals were the big thing, now it’s the JLY and I don’t like it ) and mattel still says it is but I think that is soooo not true. If the historicals were still the TRUE HEART they wouldn’t be retiring them left and right. They have like 40 JLY and only have 12 historicals (including friends, not including Samantha, Nellie and Kirsten), it would be 15 if they didn’t retire Samantha and Nellie and don’t retire Kirsten. I’ve been collecting for ten years and as the years go by I just get more and more dissapointed. I’m getting to the point where I think I might stop collecting, even though I love the dolls soooo much, mattel is just ruining it and making me soo angry. They shouldn’t ever archieve the historicals. The only thing that’ll make me change my mind about not collecting anymore, is if they focus more on the historicals (yeah right but I REALLY hope they do), come out with more outfits and accessories for the historicals (not just the popular ones), come back out with Samantha and Nellie and Kirsten, and I want their stuff to be good quality again. Uhh I REALLY miss the old ag. If you guys read this thanks cuz it’s really long lol.
I was really hoping they would come out with a bf for Kirsten (her Indian friend, I feel so bad cuz I can’t remember her name right now) and more stuff like a big collection for her like Molly and Kit have. I’m just kinda dissapointed that I didn’t get more dolls YEARS ago, but that’s not totally my fault cuz my mom said that one was enough, so I had to stick with just Samantha for a looooong time. Uhh I wouldn’t be surprised if next year they decide to retire Molly and Emily. And I want both of them tooo!! What is mattel doing with ag??? Oh they are pretty much ruining it and it seems like they are doing this as fast as they possible can. It just seems like they are just dieing to get rid of the original historicals and that just makes me even more mad at them.

1. There is a difference between “retire” and “archive”. I’ve been hearing rumors that Sam will be back, both from official and non official sources.

As far as Kirsten being archived, I think there’s a big difference between “Retiring” and “Archiving”. Regardless, I don’t like that they’re archiving Kirsten, and that they’ve archived Samantha, because I think some of the older dolls teach important lessons, and the newer generations focus on some less important issues.

Ana, the only part of surgery I find scary is when your in the operating room when they put the ”sleepy medicine” in your IV. But other than that, it’s not scary.
