Today American Girl will announce that Samantha Parkington, one of the original American Girl historical characters, will be archived or as some call it, retired.
Doll Diaries has partnered with American Girl to let readers and Samantha fans from across the globe say farewell. The upper right part of the Doll Diaries page contains a special message area where you can read farewell messages to Samantha and then if you click on it, you can go to the American Girl site and leave your own message.
Tell your friends or post about it on your favorite American Girl message board – but this is your opportunity to send Samantha a special message and let American girl know how much she will really be missed!!

So people have been talk you know about if or who might go next and here’s what I think. Look, AG has started making movies and they’ve learned that these are really successful and they can bring in TONS of money both from the movie sales and all the addition outfits and of course the best friends doll. Then, of course like Selena said there was Julie, again ton of money. BUT probably AG can not go on forever adding dolls at that pace. SO, here’s what they figure (I’m guessing). From there point of view their through with Samantha, true she is the most popular, but she’s already got her movie and now sales from that have gone done back to normal. So of all the dolls to get rid of, they chose Sam because if they got rid of Josefina now or something, then they miss out on making a movie (which I’m sure they’ll get to eventually) and making more money, but see they’ve already made their money off Samantha.
Oh yeah, and think of how much money they’ll be making this Christmas. Everyone’s gonna panic and buy Samantha stuff before she leaves for good. Probably as much off Samantha now as they did the new doll Julie last year. Even though I really want some Samantha stuff I almost don’t want to buy it because of this I don’t want to support AG anymore because they don’t care how we feel. IDK maybe I’ll find what I want on ebay instead.

OH NO!! That would mean Felicity is going next!!! She was my first doll! I got the old version!! I love her and Elizabeth!! My poor BFF dolls would be retired!! They would be retiring ALL my dolls!! And start making new historical dolls!! They REALLY liked the result of Julie, since everyone was SOOO excited about a new doll (including me!hehe) …. Ahha!! That’s why the next historical doll movie is hers!!

Dear American Girl,
First of all I’d like to say how much I love American Girl dolls and how inspiring and helpful their stories are. Reading American Girl doll books powered my love of reading. (most of them I’ve read twice!) When I heard you were retiring Samatha, I got a little teary, see now I’m thirteen and Samatha was my first doll. My mother even loves Samatha. Now I know there must be many important reasons why you are retiring Samatha, she may not be selling and there is the economic crisis that is taking place, but I urge you not to do so. Firstly, Samatha inspired me to help others and be a good friend. Her outfits are beautiful like she is, but it’s more than that. I live in a very close knitted neighborhood and the little girls I know babysit (thanks to American girl babysitting guide for help!) love to play with American girl dolls, they are finally old enough and now they will not be able to experience Samatha like I did. Samatha’s stories aren’t enough she shouldn’t be remembered through her books infact she shouldn’t have to be remembered at all. I think you should keep Samatha, don’t just keep her stories alive but her beauty and old fashioned apparel too. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way. Can’t you see from all the letters about Samatha on her farewell part of the site how much we all love her, can’t you see how horrible it would be to get rid of her? Please American Girl let Samatha’s legend live on, let millions of other girls experience Samatha like I did. Thanks you, I know you will do what’s right because American Girl is a wonderful company fueling the growth and spirit of millions no billions of girls.

Oh Samantha I just became an American Girl fan and wanted to buy you and Nelly! But it’s too late. What moments we could of shared, such memories we could make… All those dreams are down the toilet I guess… until they make another doll like you ( and Kirstin too! ). I will remain a loyal fan till the very end! Yet for all the people who wrote good-byes, keep in mind a new doll shall one day emerge from the American Girl inc. She may be like Samantha, and she may be different

Aw! You’re all so sad. Don’t worry little ones! I really don’t think it has anything to do with the economy. I think AG is just running out of ideas. There are only so many hair and eye combinations to give a doll and they haven’t had a brown hair/brown eyed doll, with the exception of Marisol, out in a long time. I bet the new 2009 doll Chrissa looks just like Samantha!
Or maybe they’re coming out with a new historical doll with a time period close to Samantha’s. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there was an 1894 doll coming out, with dresses almost like Samantha’s?
Also, Has anyone noticed that if you unbraid Molly’s hair, she’s the same doll, only with blue eyes?! You could buy her and pretend she’s Samantha.
