When it comes to decorating, I have a new favorite accessory – pillows. I am not sure why they didn’t really “speak” to me until recently, but they didn’t. I decided to take this new love of pillows to the dolls and with a scrap of white bandana fabric, some Aleene’s fabric tape and my Tulip fabric markers, I was off creating. This is the first of a few pillow projects I am working on for the dolls – it is also the most basic.
The finished product! Simple text plus a few little details make this a fun addition to the doll bed. This doll bed and bedding is from My Doll’s Life.
- A doll sized pillow for your guide (technically this is optional)
- Fabric scrap – I used what was left from a white bandanna I had picked up at Joann for 99 cents
- Tulip Fabric Markers and other embellishments
- Aleene’s Fabric Fusion fabric tape
- Poly-fil batting or lots of cotton balls
Place a doll sized pillow on the fabric to get an idea of what size you want your pillow to be. You do not have to do this step at all and can just make your pillow what ever size you would like.
Fold your fabric in half, right sides together and place the Fabric Fusion tape along two sides (one long side and one short side – the other long side will be on the fold). Peel off the paper and fold your fabric in half to seal up the seams. Turn the pillow case inside out and if you want to, you can get a grown up to help you iron it before you start decorating.
Once you have made the pillow covering, it is time to start decorating! Place a piece of cardboard or thick paper in between the layers of the pillow case and get creative! I wrote the words Sweet Dreams, but you can also slip a picture of something different in between the layers and trace something more fancy. Draw, color, use buttons or gems, pieces of ribbon or what ever else you have on hand to decorate your one of a kind pillow!
Once you have finished decorating, stuff your pillow with batting or lots of cotton balls and use the fabric tape to seal off the end.
Put your finished product on your doll’s bed or sofa. These are quick and easy to make and I bet you can’t just stop at making one!
Grace loves that this pillow matches her favorite pajamas (from Carpatina, but I do not think they are still available).
The Tulip Fabric markers are so much fun to have on hand – you can use them to add a special touch to so many items for you and your dolls!
