Doll of the Day – American Girl of the Year Marisol

The very first American Girl of the Year to join our doll family was GOTY 2005 Marisol Luna. Megan loved her story and her dance costumes. When I look at Marisol, consider how long we have had her and how much she has been played with, she really is in great shape! Her long wavy hair is so much fun to style.

THE BASICS ON MARISOL:

Manufacturer American Girl
Size 18″
Body details Soft body, vinyl limbs
Face Josefina face mold
Eyes Brown sleep eyes
Hair Wigged – wavy brown hair

Where to buy American Girl – retired – available on the secondary market
Recommended for ages 8 & up

Here you get a better look at Marisol’s soft brown eyes and her sweet face. Marisol, along with 9 other American Girl dolls have the Josefina face mold. Without looking it up, can you name all the dolls that use this face sculpt?

Marisol has had a long day and is ready for some pampering. Lucky for her, Natalie has the spa set up so Marisol can relax.

Time to relax Marisol!!

This is a photo I took of Marisol in 2006 when she still graced the top of Megan’s dresser. She is wearing her meet outfit and her cat is keeping her company, too.

Take a look at even more photos of Marisol:

  5. Delaney says:

    Marisol is beautiful…love her name

  6. Elizabeth says:

    Julie has the Josefina mold!

My Julie was bought in 2007 and her head stamped with Pleasent Company. Making me think they put an old Josefina mold on my Julie. Pretty Cool!!

  7. N says:

What a pretty doll! She had a really great collection – it’s a shame I don’t have any 2005 catalogs.

  8. AGirl says:

I am sad that she was the only Puerto Rican girl, the only other Spanish doll is sterotypicly Mexican. REALLY AG!:(

  9. StoryTeller says:

Marisol is one of my favorite GOTYs. : )
Are there really only ten AGs with the Josefina face, including MyAGs? Let’s see… Josefina, Elizabeth, Nellie, Rebecca, Julie, McKenna, Chrissa, Marisol, #28, and #53 (okay, so I had to look at one of the above posts for the numbers of the last two ; )). Hmmm, I guess so. I’m just surprised that more JLY dolls haven’t had the Josefina face– it’s so pretty and versatile.

  10. April says:

Marisol is by far one of the most attractive, and great value, dolls American Girl has made. Her coloring is beautiful and her wig is my absolute favorite! I love her name too. Her book annoys me no end though; my bottom of the list for AG books!

  11. Nina says:

I love Marisol! I love her practice outfit, and her performance outfit!

  12. All the dolls with the Josefina facemold- Josefina, Marisol, MAG 28, MAG53, Nellie, Chrissa, Rebecca, Julie& Elizabeth. Mckenna has the heart-shaped facemold, not Josefina’s

  13. Gail says:

    she was my first goty

  14. Ava says:

Aww. I love marisol and her story.

  15. Alyssa says:

Marisol is BEAUTIFUL!!!! I wish i had got her! then again, i was only 2 at that time…

  16. Rebecca says:

Josefina, Rebecca, Nellie, Elizabeth, Julie, Chrissa, Marisol, McKenna and MAGs 28 and 53! Not sure about Elizabeth though…

  17. Julia says:

What a great doll! I must get her off the second hand market, eBay or my local goodwill!

  18. theresa says:

I think the reactions to her story is why AG no longer makes GOTY’s of different ethnicities. Balance is hard to achieve. Marisol’s story was said to further stereotypes. Disney’s Sofia the First has been criticized for not being hispanic enough (whatever that means). I have a latina friend with blonde hair and green eyes and another with red hair.

  19. Sara says:

I love marisol also but why does the book annoy you?????

  20. Okay lets see… Elizabeth, Josephina, Rebecca, Julie, Marisol, Chrissa, Mckenna… Gahhhh I’m missing two! It’s probably really obvious.

  21. Maddy says:

Marisol looks so cute with her hair in braids!

  22. Cindylu says:

My husband came home from a flea market one day with a nude doll he had paid $2.00 for . Said I don’t know if you want this or not . She was Marisol !!!!! After a good clean up and hair do , she was perfect!!!!!
I’ve been lucky enough to find most of her collection and she is one of my favorites!!! He got a big hug for that treasure !!!!

  23. Char says:

Wow – oh – wow! What a great find!

  24. AGInParadise says:

Marisol is a beautiful doll. I wish they still sold her. Because if she was today is my bday and I’m going to AG and I would get her :D

  25. Alexia says:

    I have Marisol.

  26. Lena says:

Marisol was Mexican. And McKenna had the Josefina mold, not the Marie-Grace.

Josefina, Nellie, 28, Marisol, Elizabeth, Julie, Rebecca, Chrissa, McKenna, and 53 all have the Josefina. And as much as I complain they overuse the mold, I own 3 of those dolls and they are my favorites.

  27. StoryTeller says:

AGLovestudiox– There were two different versions of McKenna, but both had a Josefina face– you can tell by looking at the nose and (especially) the lips. I suspect that two different factories may have slightly different versions of the same mold. My McKenna definitely has the Josefina face– she’s like a twin to my Elizabeth and Nellie dolls.

  28. Bethany says:

She DOES have the Josefina face mold, but other than that, she looks exactly like Kanani!
Cindylu- a NUDE doll! Oh my goodness! You know, i feel sorry for a lot of boy barbies. Often they have to sit in a box or on a shelf with a bunch of nudes. Poor guys. Shield you eyes! lol

  29. McKenna doesn’t have the Josefina face mold. They look similar, I know, but I’ve seen a side by side review. You can definitely tell the differences. McKenna has the heart-shaped face mold. Not to be mean or anything. Sorry if that came out wrong.

  30. I really don’t want to sound mean. please don’t take my comment the wrong way

  31. sabrina says:

McKenna, Julie, Josefina, Chrissa, Nellie, #28, Marisol, #53, and Elizabeth. I think there’s more.

  32. sabrina says:

    And Rebecca and Marie Grace.

  33. sabrina says:

@AGLovestudiox McKenna DOES have the Josefina face mold, her face is almost identical to Marie-Grace’s who also has the Josefina face mold.

  34. sabrina says:

@Lena Marie Grace doesn’t have her own face mold, she has the Josefina mold.

  35. Tony says:

Marisol is so pretty! I love the Josefina face mold, its my second favorite behind Marie-Grace’s. : )

McKenna does have the Josefina face mold. Marie-Grace is the only one that has her face mold so far.

  36. Super Saige says:

She is so cute!!!!!!!!!!! Julie Crissa Nellie McKenna Josefina Elizebeth Marisol and some My AGs

  37. StoryTeller says:

    AGLovestudiox– : )
According to the American Girl Wiki, McKenna has the Josefina face: http://americangirl.wikia.com/wiki/McKenna_Brooks_(doll)

There isn’t a face mold specifically called “heart shaped.” The closest one is Marie-Grace’s, but that one is unique to her (so far):
    http://americangirl.wikia.com/wiki/Face_Mold

I’m not denying that there are variations in different McKennas– AGoverseasfan showed a picture of two of her McKennas that were different, but the overall shape of the lips, nose, eyes, and face was the same– which leads me back to my theory that different factories have slightly different molds. : )

  38. Lena says:

^They do. My McKenna and Chrissa, who other that wig are exactly the same, have slightly different molds. Chrissa has an old one stamped PC, and McK has AG,

    StoryTeller’s right about molds.

  39. AGInParadise says:

    @sabrina
What about Marie-Grace’s pointy chin though? There has never been a doll with a pointy chin before her…

  40. Mimi says:

Josefina, Rebecca, Julie, Chrissa, McKenna, Nellie, Elizabeth, Marisol… err, there might be more!
I also know that #53 and #28 both use it. Probably other MAGs also.

  41. Tarynn says:

Marisol is a sweet doll. I got her off of eBay last summer, because I got into American Girl late 2007. I love her, especially her heritage and the fact she’s a dancer.

  42. Makenzie says:

Marisol is really pretty! I love her collection too!

  43. Amara says:

Marisol is so beautiful. And Rascal is so cute!

  44. Emily says:

    so pretty!

  45. Maddie says:

Marie-Grace is currently the only doll with that heart-shaped (M-G) face mold. McKenna has the Josefina.

  46. Gioia says:

In tha AG place the doll my daughter really want was Marisol, sadlly she wasn’t on sale, she love all the dolls with the Josefina face mold, except Mckenna

  47. Abby says:
