Doll Customization – Adding Freckles

One of these days I am going to find a well loved AG in need of rescue and do some customizing! I know quite a few of you have done custom face ups on your dolls and are very good at it, too. Vivienne shares a simple way to add freckles to any doll – and the best part is that the freckles are do not have to be permanent.

***

Hi! My name is Vivienne and today I’m going to show you how to freckle your dolls. Before you do this project, PLEASE ask your parent/guardian for their permission.

Doll customization - how to add freckles

Start by gathering your supplies. I used a dry paper towel, a paper towel with just a little water on it (for mistakes), a soaking wet paper towel, a Super Tips Washable Crayola marker, and my Just Like You doll #27, Cassidy.

Start be deciding where you want to start. I have started on her left cheek. Wet that area with the soaking paper towel. **Be sure not to get any water in her eyes though!

Now with the marker make small dots. They don’t have to be perfect.

With the dry towel, dot excess marker and water off. Continue on the nose and other cheek.

To wash off the freckles, just rub off with a wet paper towel. Your doll now has freckles!

I freckled all of my dolls, for fun, and washed them off but I snapped some pictures before taking them off.

I hope you enjoyed learning how to freckle your dolls.

Will you do this? If so, which doll would you do? If not, which doll do you think would look good with freckles?

  3. myag says:

Wow! I’m going to use this when I get Myag 52.

  4. kananirulz says:

I think Felicity would look cute with freckles(she does in the story but not in the doll)

  5. Freckle Face says:

Whoops I meant I would do that, not I would that.

  6. Delaney says:

I do this all the time! I think I saw a YT vid on it. I love McKenna with freckles, and Emily! I’ll be gettign some redhead MAG dolls, and the ones that do not have freckles I will be adding freckles to.

  7. Such a fun idea, we might give this a try!

  8. Sunny smiles studios says:

    SOOO cute!!!!!!!!

  9. Vivienne says:

Thank you for posting this Char! I am SO glad you all like it! I think Cassidy looks like a longer-haired Kit with freckles, which is adorable. Thanks again, everyone!

  10. I always thought it weird that AG’s freckles never were on the dolls noses.

  11. Lauren says:

This is so Awesome! I know someone from AGTube who did this with paint and then if she didn’t like it she removed it with non-Acetone nail polish remove. I’m going to try this too because I just got a doll from Craigslist who has green eyes and honey blonde hair and she needs just a little sprucing. I fixed her hair and am going to but more color on her cheeks and finally some freckles!

  12. StoryTeller says:

That’s a great idea! Thank you, Vivienne!
I’m not sure I’m brave enough to try it myself (unless I find a doll on eBay or at the thrift store), but I think McKenna and Elizabeth would be really cute with freckles.

  13. Bethany says:

So the freckles can be removed after you keep them on for a while?!?! That is awesome!
Lol, the first picture looked like you were preparing for surgery!

  14. Bethany says:

Speaking of adding stuff to your doll that is removable, if you put a piece of transparent tape over your doll’s mouth, then trace over her lips with a permanent marker, she can have lipstick!!!! :-) AND when you want to take it off, you just peel off the tape! (plus when the tape is over her mouth she can’t complain about it. Ha ha!)

  15. Vivienne says:

Storyteller- I have an old Springfield doll that I use to test the freckles on and left them for a week, and they still came off. I put freckles on McKenna, and she looks GREAT!
Bethany- The first picture does kinda look like that.
Lauren- I bet she looks great! I’d love to see her!

  16. Vivienne says:

Also, Cassidy’s hair is cut. She is in the process of being customized.

  17. Nina says:

    Love this technique!

  18. meghan=) says:

    Sweet!

  19. sabrina says:

For some reason, I think Molly would look cute with freckles. Or a MAG.

  20. Adorable! Another idea, (the one I’ve used) is brown eye liner. :) It doesn’t come off AS easily, but yeah.

  21. Tony says:

Vivienne – Too cute! Thanks for the tips! : )

  22. Emma says:

    cool!

  23. Lindsey :) says:

    Cute! LOL Bethany !
    :D

  24. N says:

    That’s clever!

  25. Heather Leabman says:

I love this – it’s way better than the AG freckles ‘cuz they’re too perfect – this looks more like the My Twinn freckle painting – custom – and you can do it to match yourself in the mirror.

  26. Bailey13 says:

I love that it’s not perment. It looks porfessional!

  27. Rachel says:

    Very cool.
Does anyone else go to Bass Pro Shop? In the one near me they have their own 18″ dolls! They are Gotz and they have this cute nature stuff and an adorable denim skirt and camouflage shirt.

  28. iloveag says:

Cool! I might do this if i find a doll at goodwill. I’m to scared to do it to a new one. I think #33 would look good with freckles though.

  29. Julia says:

I will SO do this! I will probably do this to my #33, or a doll I find at my newly-found goodwill. I’m glad its not permanent, in case I change my mind.

  30. Maddie says:

Chrissa looks nice like that :)

  31. Sydney says:

    Cool! This is awesome!

  32. Vivienne says:

Ellen Rose is #33, if you kept them on, she could be Nickis twin.

  33. Juliet XD says:

this was the same thing i did on one of the recsues i did! sometimes i add more or take some off!

  34. Natalia says:

I think I might do that just for a little while on my Chrissa…

  35. Sparkie says:

I think Marie-Grace would look awesome with freckles!

  36. GEM says:

Thank you so much for posting this I have always wanted freckles on my MAG twenty-one (me too)!!!

  37. emmy says:

    you should do felicity!!!

  38. Mimi says:

Cute! I’d do it, but over half my dolls have freckles so I’m good there xD

  41. Lindsey :) says:

Ellen Rose is a cutie with freckles !

  42. Sparkie says:

I just did Marie-Grace, and she looks so cute with freckles!

  43. Makenzie says:

I might try this! But I’m Not sure I’m brave enough…

  44. GEM says:

Makinzie- You must do this it looks so cute and remember it is removeable.

  45. Emily says:

Cool! I might do this, if I do I will do it on my My AG doll to make her look more like me! :)

  46. Katie says:

Don’t do it, girls…my mom said American girl dolls faces WILL absorb some and so a few freckles might not ever come come off…..I would never do this, not even on a rescue doll! Wait till the next day to see if you STILL want to do it. Chances are, you won’t.

  47. Vivienne says:

It is, of course, always best to use your own discretion when doing anything to your dolls. However, I can say that I did leave it on a doll for a week and had no problem getting it completely off with only water. I would definitely not recommend leaving them on as long as I did just to be careful. But, if you do want to do it and take a few pictures you can always test it in an inconspicuous location, i.e. back of the neck, bottom of the foot, first to see if you can wipe it completely off after a few minutes. (Keep in mind that different markers can react differently on surfaces so it is always best to test them first.) If it does not come off very easily, then I would suggest not trying it. Again, though, I had no problem getting it off after a week.

  48. Miriam says:

I used colored pencil when I did a doll that looks like me for my daughter. Looks more natural than marker, and easy to clean off if you make a mistake, or no longer want her to have freckles.
Looking at our AG dolls… AG did not get Emily right. Redheads have freckles – period. May have to add some on her!

  49. Miriam says:

Even washable markers stain doll skin – I wouldn’t use marker – try colored pencil. If you have a marker stain – try benzoyl peroxide 10% for a few days (or weeks if it is an old stain) Don’t use on painted areas.

  50. Kayley says:

Chrissa looks amazing like that! I’m usually not a fan of Chrissa in general, but she looks great with freckles!
