Today I thought it would be fun to show you how to make your own Valentine hair bands for your dolls using scraps of felt and elastic you may have around your house. The hair band I am showing today can also be glued but this is a great beginning sewing project and I am sure once you get started you will end up making them for all your dolls!
You will need:
- Felt in any color (I used red and white)
- needle and thread
- 2.5 inches of elastic (I used 1/4 inch elastic from my sewing box)
- a button
- a ruler
Step 1 – Measure an 8 inch by 2 inch strip of felt
Step 2 – Measure 2.5 inches of elastic (you can use a pony tail holder see alternate directions at the bottom of this post)
Step 3 – Wrap the ends of your felt around one end of the elastic as shown
Step 4 – Secure your elastic with a needle and thread, as many stitches ad you feel you need to hold down all the edges. I used 10 stitches.
Step 5 – Repeat on the other side
Step 6 – Stitch your hair band (or glue it closed) on the inside. The flaps should fold over each other.
Step 7 – Cut out some heart shapes from scraps of felt, try to make them slightly different sizes so you can layer them.
Step 8 – Layer the hearts on top of each other and attach to your hair band using a needle and thread.
Step 9 – add your button to secure your hearts in place, I stitched mine on with 6 stitches.
Step 10 – put your hair band on your doll!
***Now if you do not have elastic as shown in your sewing box you can make a wonderful hair band for you doll the way my friend NikiG showed me.
For this version you will need to cut your felt thinner.
You will need:
- a strip of felt that measures 8 inches by 1 inch wide
- a pony tail holder
- a glue gun (white glue will work but takes longer to dry)
- scrap felt to make hearts for the hair band
Step 1 – Cut your felt
Step 2 – loop your pony tail holder so there is a knot in the middle, as if you were tying your shoe. Make bunny ears and loop through.
Step 3 – heat up your glue gun or get out your white glue
Step 4 – Feed the end of your felt through one of the loops of your elastic and secure with a bit of glue
Step 5 – Repeat on the other end
Step 6 – when it is dry you can put it on your doll
This is my new favorite way to make hair bands!
Here is what it looks like from behind!
I hope you enjoyed today’s craft and that you enjoy your Valentine’s day!
