AG Pet Bed vs a DIY Pet Bed

This is Char and I am having way too much fun with Karen’s craft this week! When she sent me the instructions for how to make this cute DIY pet bed she mentioned that she doesn’t have the new AG Pet bed set so she just included the stock AG photo. Well, it just so happens that one of the items my daughter wanted to buy with her own money when we went to American Girl Tyson’s Corner in June was the brand new Pet Bed set. So, our Coconut and the new Pet Bed set get to model right next to Karen’s DIY or Copycat version of the set. I happen to think Karen’s version is super creative and very affordable to make with fun foam and other recycled items you may have at home. We may just have to make a second one for another one of our AG pets.

How to Make Your Own Copycat AG Pet Bed and Accessories

  • 1 piece of fun foam
  • 4-12 inch pieces of 1/8 inch ribbon or string
  • A pencil
  • Scissors
  • A ruler
  • A hole punch
  • 1 piece of felt
  • Stuffing or fiberfill for the cushion

Make Your Own Pet Bed for Small Stuffed Animals

Use your ruler to cut your fun foam sheet to a 10 inch square, then mark your fold and cut lines with a pencil as shown. Next cut the fun foam in at the markings you made as shown. Repeat on all four sides.

Making a doll sized pet bed

Take your hole punch and punch two holes through both sides of the foam – itโ€™s easiest to do it through both pieces at the same time so that the holes match up. Then take your pre-cut ribbons and thread them through as shown and tie them as you would your shoes. Repeat all the way around and you should have your square pet bed. In the photo of the American Girl pet bed they have cut out a small half circle for the front and I did as in my finished product but you can leave it the way it is if you want.

DIY Pet Bed Cushion

For the cushion, use one piece of felt, folded in half and cut so that it will fit easily in the pet bed. Then use a hot glue gun, (you could hand sew or use craft glue) to make a pocket to slide the stuffing in. Glue the opening closed and let it dry then place it in your finished pet bed.

Doll Pet Dish from OJ Lid

Next I made the pet food dish using a lid from my orange juice. I used Tropicana 50 which we had on our vacation and I brought home the lids. You can use any lid really, I just liked the color and size of this one.

I looked for little brown pom-poms at my craft store but they were sold out of brown so I used Styrofoam balls instead. I cut them up and glued them into my dish, then I colored them brown.

There was also a play chew toy in the set from American Girl so I wanted to make a similar one for my doll play set. I used a large plastic bead with a large hole in the center.ย  I used embroidery floss and thread it through the center of the bead in 12 inch strips. After I got about 4 strands through each bead, I tied the strings together in a knot on either end, then trimmed them so they looked like the ones in the photo from the AG set.

As much fun as it was making my own set I still really recommend the American Girl Pet Bed set and have it on my wish list for my next trip down to the Seattle Store.

I look forward to sharing more ideas with you next week. ~ By Karen of Karen Mom of Three
