I’m working on a few doll sized gifts for the holidays.  This quick and easy project is a no-sew handbag.  It is made with Phoomph.  Phoomph is great for crafters because you can raid your fabric stash and make cute little doll sized projects!  Phoomph is sticky on both sides and bonds to fabric.  It makes your fabric stiffer and keeps the fabric from fraying.  My flimsy fabric is now a stiff and smooth little handbag without a stitch to be seen!

This handbag has big style and a little room to hold a few essentials.

If you don’t have Phoomph, give felt a try!  You could probably make the whole thing out of felt and glue.

Let’s take a look at what we’ll need for this project!

  • fabric scraps in up to three patterns
  • ribbon
  • Phoomph
  • glue

First let me touch on a few cool things about Phoomph,

  • Phoomph is a product that makes your fabric stiff.
  • The fabric sticks to the adhesive that is on both sides.
  • Once in the adhesive, the fabric and Phoomph are easy to cut together.
  • The edges of the fabric don’t fray

With these qualities in mind I set out to make a little handbag for dolls.  Come along and let’s make one together!

Cut a piece of Phoomph to 3 1/4″ x 3 1/4″.   Cut the inside lining fabric (the roses) to 3″ by 3″.   The outside fabric (the chevron) needs to be 3 1/2″ by 3 1/2″.

Peel off one side of the paper lining of the Phoomph.

Place the sticky side down on the wrong side of the outside fabric.

Peel off the the second paper lining on the Phoomph.

Center the fabric lining on the adhesive.

Cut each corner off at an angle.  Fold the overhanging fabric around the edge and press it into the adhesive.

Closure Flap

Cut a strip of Phoomph, and fabric to 3/8″ by 1 1/2″.  Place the fabric on one side of the Phoomph and trim the two pieces to the same size.

On the back side of the strip place a piece of fabric to cover all but 3/8″ of one end.

Closure Loop

Cut a strip of Phoomph 1/4″ by 1 3/4″.  On one side place a piece of fabric in the center.

Place a strip of fabric on the back.

Press the closure flap on the top edge.

Press the closure loop along the bottom edge.

Cut 2 strips of Phoomph and place one on each side.

Place a loop for ribbon 5″ long in the adhesive on one side.

With a second little strip of Phoomph, place it over the ribbon ends.

Fold the square in half and seal the edges together.

Below I’ve demonstrated how the closure tab and loop work together to hold the handbag closed.

Decorative Edge

If you want to add a decorative touch, cut a rectangle of Phoomph and place it on a accent fabric.  Cut it into strips, 5/8″ wide and 1/4″ wide.

Prepare the strips to fit along the edges of the handbag.  On the sides, the strip will wrap around the edge, front to back.  The sides are 3/4″ x 1 3/4″.  On the side of the handbag with the ribbon, cut a line in the center, about 3/8″ down.

The decorative strips need a little more adhesive to secure them in place.  Place a little glue and the strips on the sides, and then cut and place the strips on the top edge.

Here is the front and back of the little handbag.

Saige loads up her little handbag and holds it in her hand (with the help of a few glue dots!)  She can also slip the ribbon over her wrist to take it along with her!

Whether you use some fun fabric and Phoomph or try this craft with plain felt and glue, this is a quick and easy craft!
