Last week I was in Hawaii and Sabrina made a request in the comments that I show how to make floral leis for your dolls. So I thought it would be fun to show you two ways you can bring the feeling of the Hawaiian Islands to your doll play adventures using items you may already have at home or can pick up easily at your local dollar store.
To create Hawaiian inspired floral leis using method #1, you will need:
- Construction Paper
- 14 inches of ¼ inch elastic or elastic yarn
- A pencil
- A ruler
Step 1– To create a paper lei for your doll you will need to draw a flower or butterfly shape on a piece of paper and cut it out – this will be your pattern.
Step 2- Choose your paper colors and trace your flower shape on the paper, cut them out. (I cut out 21 flowers for my lei.)
Step 3– Use your pencil tip to poke a hole in the center of each flower and put aside.
Step 4– Cut a straw in to seven equal pieces; these will go between your flower groups on the lei.
Step 5- Cut a piece of ¼ inch elastic or stretchy elastic yarn to 14 inches or longer.
Step 6– Thread a cut up straw on to your elastic.
Step 7– Thread your first three flowers on to your elastic and then repeat step 6 and 7 until you are out of flowers and straw pieces.
Step 8– Once all your flowers and straw pieces are on the elastic, tie your ends into a knot. Then place the lei over your doll’s head and enjoy!
To create Hawaiian inspired floral leis using method #2, you will need:
- A dollar store lei
Step 1– Purchase a lei from the dollar or party store and remove it from the package. Each store bought lei will make two doll sized leis. Find the center of the lei and spread the flower petals apart and use a pair of scissors to snip it apart. Remove the straw from the string. Tie a knot on the ends of each string you have just cut.
Step 2– Hold one end of the lei and find the center again and make another cut. Tie a knot in each cut end. You will now have two strings of flowers.
Step 3- Take one string of the two flower strings you have created and tie the ends together, this will make your doll sized lei. Repeat on the other string and you will have two leis for your dolls.
I had fun in Hawaii but I am so happy to be home here in Canada creating again for all of you. I hope you enjoy today’s craft and I look forward to sharing more crafts with you again soon!
