Doll Craft: Easy to Make Doll Sized Lasagna & Salad

I love the attention to detail that the American Girl Delicious Dinner Set has – it is absolutely amazing! So I decided that this would be our next DIY or copycat craft based on an American Girl catalog item.

copycat craft, diy doll lasagna

I have to say one of my favorite parts of this set is the lasagna and when I was in the dollar store I found this fantastic dollar store gem, a set of two ramekins that look just like my own lasagna dish! These ramekins are 3 inches long and 2 inches wide and the perfect doll play bake ware dishes. The package cost $1.25 and I bought the round ones that looked like quiche dishes or flan dishes as well.

doll sized dishes

I have lots of fun foam and felt on hand so I thought this would be a great way to use it and create my own doll sized lasagna.

How to make doll sized lasagna from fun foam and felt:

Cut out 2 – 1 inch by 1 ½ inch rectangular pieces of fun foam and felt to fill the lasagna pan.

To create my Lasagna I used:

  • tan fun foam and cut 3 rectangles
  • red fun foam and cut 2 rectangles
  • orange felt and cut 2 rectangles
  • white felt and cut 2 rectangles

Layer tan, white, orange, red, tan, white, orange, red and then tan.

Next carefully cut each piece it in half, so you can serve the dolls each a large piece for their dinner. Then glue each layer to the next to create two separate pieces. When it is totally dry place each piece back in the dish.

DIY Doll Lasagna craft

Next I thought it would be great to serve a side salad with my doll sized Lasagna.

To make the salad, cut 6 leaf shapes out of two colors of green felt or you can use fun foam if that is what you have. Then cut some red tomato circles out of the red and some orange felt for carrots. I alternated the leaves and topped it with the “tomatoes and carrots” and glued all of it into place.

If you have not come across a great doll play plate set for your dolls you can easily use fun foam to create a reusable plate. I created these by tracing a juice glass and cutting out the circle. You can also glue your salad to the plates you made if you would like.

Doll Diaries DIY Doll Lasagna

Well I think my dolls are really enjoying their homemade Lasagna and salad. I think I may go make my own family Lasagna for dinner!

I look forward to sharing more ideas with you next week. ~ By Karen of Karen Mom of Three

I love making doll food out of craft foam. I have been making things for a while. So far I have done eggs, pizza, bacon toast sandwiches salad and a lot more. I also have steaks and apple slices from Doll Dining Book. Thanks for this idea! I love your crafts! Oh and tissue paper works great for lettuce. I buy the multi color tissue paper packs at the dollar store and use the green for lettuce. It gives it the right texture! Try it out sometime!

  22. olivia says:

Karen- heres an idea for the Chinese resturaunt. Little take out boxes! they have doll sized printable take out boxes on they are kinda small though so you will have to enlarge it. 4evragz on youtube has a video showing how to make it. (i would explain it myself but its hard to describe without actually showing you how to do it.)

  23. olivia says:

I would like to see a Chinese shop. Whenever I get Ivy I could pretend its her grandparents resturaunt the happy panda! : )

  24. olivia says:

I mean restuaunt!!! (i just now noticed my mistake 4 hours later) LOL!!!!

  25. Karen – my girls are in love with that AG set, but I totally balked at the price. $58?? Outrageous! Although it IS really darn cute. If you used decorative scissors for the “noodle” pieces, you could give them curvy edges like the real noodles. And you must have the most awesome dollar stores near you. You always have great finds. And I’m going to follow Annie’s suggestion from above and check out what’s new at Target.

  26. I’m thinking the extra thick craft foam could be used to make the garlic bread for this too.

To anyone who has the actual AG set – are the pieces all plastic?

  27. Jessica H. says:

Wow, thank you so much for this great idea! I am always looking for ways to give my girls things to do with their dolls (and unfortunately I cannot afford AG prices!). This is fantastic! You really show how you can look at items from the dollar store in a whole different fashion! Thank you so much!

  28. Jacsan says:

I will try this soon. Thanks for the idea!

  29. Yasmine says:

Karen, i live in ottawa (canada), and they are turning ALL the zellers into Target! Also, can you do something for dessert, breakfast, lunch & dinner? No rush, though. You have FANTASTIC ideas!

  30. Hello Everyone, Thank you all so much for your kind words! I have been so busy making all your suggestions, I hope you like the next few weeks of posts! I do have great dollar stores near me and I bet you all do too. You just have to remember to look at things you already have and things you may see in a store in a different way!
I am so excited to share with you all the items i have been working on, I better get thinking about a Chinese Restaurant! Jessica, I understand completely about wanting to add to your doll play collection with out breaking the bank. So I hope that I can show you here and on my own blog some truly affordable and fun ways to do that.
Looking forward to next weeks post only three days away,

  31. Karen, this is so cute!

  32. Suzanne says:

  36. Laura says:

Great ideas! My youngest daughter is really into American Girl now and wants me to make all kinds of stuff. Last weekend I made a doll kitchen for her out of 2 cardboard boxes that paper reams come in. It turned out so cute. If I can figure out how to attach it I will send it along. I ended up putting a frig, sink, stove, cupboard and microwave in it. Now to add food. :) THis idea for the italian set is great since we were just at the American Girls shop and I told her we would figure something else out.
