Easy Halloween Bags for dolls

Continuing with our fall fun theme at our house, today I wanted to share with you two easy ways to turn dollar store items into great doll play accessories.

This time of year my dollar store is packed with so many wonderful and inexpensive craft items. I bought a three pack of little orange treat bags and thought it would be fun to create my own Halloween Treat Bags for my dolls using items such as felt, fun foam and buttons. Hand sewing is a great craft skill to have and this craft is a great way to learn to sew a basic straight stitch.

To create today’s craft you will need:

  • Mini craft bags from the dollar store in any color (I used orange for Halloween)
  • Felt in Orange and Black, or fun foam pre-cut and sticky back or cut your own in orange and black
  • Scissors
  • Thread in black and orange
  • A sewing needle
  • Three small black buttons (they do not have to match)
  • A small yellow and smaller orange button for embellishment
  • A fun foam flower sticker
  • A pumpkin cookie cutter

Peel and Stick Applique:

If you are using fun foam and it is sticky backed arrange it on your treat bag first. Once you like the design, remove the backing and stick into place. If it is not and you are using glue, glue it into place and set aside to dry.

Fun Foam Sewn Applique:

Step 1-If you do not have a pre cut shape, use a pumpkin shaped cookie cutter and trace it on your orange fun foam. Cut it out.

Step 2– If you are sewing into place thread your needle and knot the bottom with the lightest color first and position your pumpkin shape on your bag. Once you are happy with it put your first stitch through the inside of the bag and your fun foam pumpkin shape. Stitch all the way around your pumpkin.

Step 3- Cut out a hat if you wish, two eyes, a nose and a mouth. Glue or stitch into place.

Step 4– Embellish the corner of your hat. Use a fun foam sticker, or sew buttons into place.

Felt Applique:

Step 1– Use a pumpkin shaped cookie cutter to trace out your pumpkin shape on your felt.

Step 2– Cut out the pumpkin shape and position your pumpkin on your bag.

Step 3– Thread your sewing needle and knot the ends of your thread.

Step 4– Begin sewing your pumpkin to your bag in a simple straight stitch as shown in the top photo above

Step 5- Sew all along the edge of your pumpkin, try to keep your stitched all about the same length. Once all the way around, knot on the inside of your bag and trim the thread.

Step 6– Cut out a hat shape from your black felt, I cut mine free hand. Position it where you want it on your pumpkin.

Step 7– Thread your sewing needle with black thread and knot the ends.

Step 8– Begin sewing your hat to your pumpkin, starting on the inside of the bag. Try to keep your stitches the same length. Once all the way around the hat, knott on the inside of your bag and trim the thread.

Step 9– Peel the backing from a small fun foam flower sticker and position on your hat. Press into place.

Step 10– Layer your colored buttons and thread your sewing needle with black thread, knot the ends.

Step 11– Push your sewing needle through the inside of your bag, through the center of the fun foam flower. Then lower your buttons onto the flower.

Step 12– Stitch them into place, a few stitches should secure them. Knot on the inside of your bag and trim the thread.

Step 13– Add your small black buttons for eyes or cut triangles from felt and sew into place.

Step 14– Cut out a mouth and nose from black felt and sew into place. Knot the thread on the inside of your bag and trim. Your bag is now ready to use!

Today I used my American Girl Doll Ivy wearing my Pleasant Company Bitty Baby Pumpkin Costume and my American Doll Room.

I hope you enjoyed today’s craft and I look forward to sharing more craft ideas with you next week.
