It’s been duck tape wallet mania at our house. My 12 year old daughter has mastered the craft and we had a group of friends over to make some just for fun! I leaned over the table and watched them create endless combinations of colors and personalize their own with little ideas they came up with on the fly. They were so cute and I thought to myself, I am going to make a doll sized version! And my own twist on it will be that I will make it big enough to hold doll money and small enough to fit in the doll purse we made a little while back (remember…out of a gum package:) )!
So with a little experimenting I designed a duck tape wallet that folds in half with a closure tab that holds it shut.
Join the duck tape wallet fun and make one for your dolls!
Let’s see what we’ll need.
- duck tape
- self adhesive jewels
Cut 4 pieces of duck tape 3 1/4” long. An easy way to measure and cut duck tape is to stick it to the edge of a ruler at the measurement you want. Here I stuck it to the ruler at 3 1/4”. Then trim the duck tape at the bottom edge of the ruler.
Take 2 pieces of duck tape and lay them down with the sticky side up. Stick the 2 pieces together along the 3 1/4” side, overlapping them 1/2”. Repeat with the next 2 pieces of duck tape.
Now you have 2 sections of duck tape that are nearly square. Lay one down with the sticky side up. Take the second one and attach it to the first, sticky side to sticky side. Now you have 1 square of double sided duck tape. This is the foundation of the wallet.
Making a Pocket
Next we are going to prepare the strips that connect the wallet together.
- Cut a 2” strip of duck tape. Along the cut edge make 1/2” snips.
- Hold the duck tape on either side of the snip. Tear the duck tape into a strip.
- Repeat with the rest of the 2” strip. Pictured is the 2” strip torn into 1/2” x 2” strips. There was a tiny strip left over.
Take the double sided square of duck tape and fold it in half. On either end, position half of the tape strip on the edge. Fold it over onto the back.
Trim the extra tape strip off. Now you have a little pocket.
Making a Closure
To make a closure for the wallet cut a strip of duck tape 1 1/4” X 1”. Fold it in half on the 1” side so it measures 1 1/4” X 1/2”. Center this double sided strip on one end of the pocket. Overlap it onto the wallet about 1/4”. Use a scrap of duck tape left over or cut a piece to 1/2” X 2”. Secure the closure tab with the strip of tape. Trim any tape that hangs over the edge.
We are going to add a little bling to the closure tab! Don’t hesitate to add anything fun to decorate the closure tab. What ever you like! What ever you have on hand! Buttons, flowers, stickers are a few fun possibilities! I lined up a few self adhesive jewels.
Now flip the wallet over and add a little “roll” of duck tape. Fold the wallet in half and fold the closure tab over. Ta-da! All finished!
Your wallet may be finished but don’t forget the cash! Mine is a free printable that you can download after you sign up for a free purse pattern from Doll Clothes Patterns. Doll Diaries also has some fun doll play money you can print.
For fun I had to slip in a couple mini coins from Kit’s and Julie’s AG Accessory sets!
