Anna here!  There are a few best friends among the American Girl books and dolls.  Do any of your dolls have a best friend?  Today I have a fun and easy craft to make your dolls a pair of best friend necklaces!

Each friend wears half of a heart.

Yes, best friends forever!

I’ve included a printable to make it quick and easy!

You can decide whether to make it plain or add a little pizzaz with glitter!

Let’s take a look at what you’ll need!

I wanted these little hearts to be customizable, so they are plain white with a black outline.  You can print it on colored paper or use markers, colored pencils or crayons to decorate it.

Print out the Best Friend Necklace Printable and glue the necklace charms to cardstock.  The pattern will make two necklaces.  I’ve added labels to distinguish between necklace 1 and 2.  Each necklace has a front and back piece.  In my example the light purple pieces are the front and the pink pieces are the back.  While cutting out the pieces, keep necklace 1 and necklace 2 separate.  The jagged edges are different on the two necklaces.  If you mix up the pieces from necklace 1 and necklace 2,  the jagged edges will not line up.

Let’s add a loop to the necklace charm.  Make a small loop in the wire.  Twist the loop and cut off the extra wire.  Make two loops altogether.

Glue the looped wire between the front and back piece of one necklace.  I used hot glue to attach the wire.  If you allow time for it to dry, you could use Mod Podge to attach the wire.

Repeat with the other necklace.

To make it more durable, coat one side of the heart with Mod Podge.  When it dries, turn it over, and coat the other side.

I had to add a little bling to my necklaces!  If you would like a little sparkle, paint Mod Podge, using a little paint brush, around the edge of the necklace.  Sprinkle the edges with glitter.  Paint and glitter one side at a time and allow it to dry.  Don’t worry about brushing off the extra glitter on the necklace until the glue dries completely.

To prevent the glitter from coming off, paint a little layer of Mod Podge on top of the glitter on the edge.  Allow it to dry.  Repeat with the other side.  That way you can have all the sparkle without the mess!  When it is completely dry, rub off the loose glitter.

Place the charm on a piece of elastic chord and tie the elastic ends.  My elastic was 8 1/2″ long to start with and when it’s tied it will stretch  easily over the dolls head.  Before you cut the elastic, try it on your doll to make sure it will easily come on and off.
