One of my favorite party games is the “Egg and Spoon Race”.  Did you know that the Egg and Spoon Race was a game played by people in Victorian times? The first ever recorded usage of the term “Egg and Spoon Race” was written in The Daily News Paper September 8th 1894 according to Wikipedia. This garden party game quickly became very popular and it is still played today! This week  we celebrate Victorian times I have made an Egg and Spoon Race Craft for dolls.

To make your own you will need:

  •  Silver or Grey Sculpey Clay
  • White or Brown Sculpey Clay
  • Sculpey work and bake mat or brown paper/parchment for baking
  • Baking sheet
  • Sculpey tools or plastic craft knife
  • Ruler

*Oven preheated to 275 degrees  and parental guidance in the kitchen

Step 1- cover your work space and assemble your supplies. Have an adult preheat the oven.

Step 2- Roll out your eggs first. Always work with your lighter color clay first so you avoid transferring color to your next project.  Roll small amounts of white or light brown clay between your fingers and over your work space to create doll sized eggs that are 1/2 inch long. Set them aside for baking.

Step 2- Work the silver or grey clay in your hands and roll out a snake shape  1/4 of an inch thick and 2 inches long. At one end of the snake shape use one of the Sculpey tools to make an indent that will be the base of your spoon, use your craft knife tool to shape the clay around the indent creating the sides of the spoon.

Step 3- Use your craft knife tool to add shape and detail to your spoon if you wish or use your craft knife tool to smooth out any rough edges. Repeat using remaining clay if you wish to have more then one spoon.

Step 4- Place your baking mat or oven safe paper on the baking tray and carefully transfer your “Eggs and Spoon” to your baking sheet. Bake your “Egg’s and Spoons” according to the directions on the side of your Sculpey clay. I baked mine for 30 minutes.

Step 4- Have an adult help you removed your tray from the oven and allow your clay Eggs and Spoons to cool completely. Once cool, get your doll ready to race! To help your doll hold the spoon you can use a tape loop on her hand and the back of the spoon, the egg should rest easily in the spoon.

Egg and Spoon Race Rules:

Each player has one spoon and one egg and they must race against their opponents from the start to the finish line with out dropping their eggs. If a player drops their egg they must retrieve the egg and start over. The first one to cross the finish line with the egg on their spoon wins!

I hope you enjoy making this craft and playing this Tea Time Classic game!
