A few weeks ago Natalie and her friends decorated flip flops with scraps of fabric tied around the straps, then last week I got an email from one of our readers, Katie, with a mini tutorial on making doll sized flip flops with fabric strips, soooo I decided these must be popular right now and decided to make a pair of Patriotic Flip Flops for the dolls.

Ruthie loves her new flip flops and they were really not hard to make at all!

Supplies needed to make the Scrappy Tie Flip Flops:

  • Fun Foam or cardboard – I used white Text-ur fun foam from Creative Hands and blue regular fun foam
  • A strip of cardboard or ribbon to go across the foot
  • Assorted ribbon and/or fabric scraps cut into 2.5″ long pieces
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue

Step 1 – Stand your doll on the fun foam and carefully trace her feet. You will need two pieces of fun foam or cardboard for each foot.

Step 2 – Cut out your four feet. I used the White Text-UR foam with the bumps for the bottom of the shoe and then put the blue foam on top of it.

I just happened to find some red and white duck tape floating around and thought it would might add a perfect splash of red for July 4th . I covered the blue foam with the duct tape and gave it a trim.

Step 3 – Measure your cardboard strip or ribbon so it is long enough to wrap all the way around your doll’s foot.

Step 4 – Glue one end of the strip onto the inside of the shoe base, add the top layer and then carefully insert the other end in between layers and glue.

I found this fun scalloped cardstock that I used for the strap of the shoe. I could have stopped there, but noooooo, I felt like the shoes needed something more.

Step 5 – Cut your ribbon and fabric scraps so they are about 2.5″ long.

Step 6 – Start tying alternating pieces of ribbon and/or fabric around the strap of the shoe. The more you can squeeze on there, the fuller the fluff will be and the cuter they will look.

Tada – Ruthie has new shoes! There are lots of different ways to make doll flip flops and you can get SO creative with them. (Here are more ideas from a post Karen did long agoΒ and one from Jen earlier this year)

Ruthie is ready for the picnic! Her headband was also made using a scrap from the Laura Kelly fabric I used for the tablecloth.

Are you ready for July 4th festivities? Are your dolls going to do anything fun?Β
