This week I made some very fun and easy fairy tale costumes for my mini dolls and thought it would be fun to show you how easy it is to make your own. I love the mini dolls and finding fun ways to create play sets for them. These ideas can be adapted for any doll and would work very well with Monster High, Barbie and even your 18 inch Dolls.
To create this week’s craft you will need:
- Your Mini Doll
- Red Felt
- 12 inches of Ribbon
- A needle with thread
- Fun Foam in Pink, White Light and Dark Brown
- 4 sets of googly eyes
- A Brown or Black Mini Pompom
- A Ruler
- A black fine tip marker
- A pencil
- Scrap paper
- A Glue Gun or Glue Dots
- * optional stretch elastic cord
Step 1– To make Little Red Riding Hoods cape I used 1 square of red felt. Cut your felt to a square 8 inches by 8 inches.
Step 2- Fold the felt square over your dolls head as shown in the photos above.
Step 3- Fold a ¼ inch of that edge up and tuck the felt down around your dolls neck. This will become your dolls cape hood.
Step 4- Thread your needle. I used white so you could see where I made my marks but you should use red if you have it.
Step 5- Use your thread to secure the cape hood. A few stitches should secure it in place. Knot your thread and repeat on the other side.
Step 6– Next you will need to attach your ribbon ties. Cut the 12 inch ribbon in half and use your needle and thread to sew on your ribbon ties at the same spot you made your hood. Repeat on both sides.
Step 7– With your dolls hood tied-up; make a snip with your scissors for your dolls arms on each side. You may want to ask a grown up to help with this step.
Step 8– Trim the excess felt from the bottom of your cape as I have in the top left photo so your doll doesn’t trip. Your Cape is ready for play.
Step 1– To make the Big Bad Wolf Mask for your mini dolls you will need both colors of brown fun foam, two googly eyes and a pompom for the nose. You will also need a pencil and paper to create a face shape template for your mask.
Step 2– Draw a large Shape for your mask template on a piece of scrap paper and cut it out. I drew a shape that was twice as large as my dolls face.
Step 3– Trace your shape on your lighter fun foam and cut it out.
Step 4– Next cut a 1 inch wide by 7 inch strip from your fun foam. This piece will be used to hold the mask on your dolls head. *You could also use stretch elastic for this for larger dolls.
Step 4– Cut out the ear shapes for your wolf. I used dark brown for the ears and then cut smaller shapes out of the light brown and glued them to the dark. Add two dabs of glue or glue dots and attach your wolf ears.
Step 5– Glue your googly eyes into place
Step 6– Cut out white teeth for your wolf and glue them into place on your mask.
Step 7– Glue on your Wolf’s nose. Press the pompom into your glue or glue dot
Step 8– To get your mask to stay on your dolls head take the 1 inch by 7 inch strip you made in step 4 and use glue or a glue dot to attach one end to the inside of your mask as shown in the bottom left of the photos above.
Step 9– Add another dab of glue and create a circle, pressing the other end next to the already glued in strip. Let dry and then try on your doll.
Step 1– To make the pig masks you will need to cut out three similar shaped circles for the pigs faces from fun foam. I made a template out of scrap paper but you can also cut it free hand.
Step 2– Once your pig mask shape is cut out you will need to cut out six little triangle ears for your masks. Then Glue them on to the mask as shown in the middle photo above.
Step 3– Glue on your googly eyes
Step 4– Cut out the 3 pigs snouts. I used a small oval shape. Glue in the center of your pig masks.
Step 5– Use a fine lined marker to make the pigs nostrils and glue into place.
Step 6– Cut out three 1 inch by 7 inch strips of fun foam. Glue them into place on the back of your mask as you did in steps 8 and 9 of the wolf mask. Let dry and you are ready to play both Little Red Riding Hood and The Three little pigs!
Today I used my 5 American Girl mini dolls Rebecca, Ivy, Nellie, Cecile and Kit
The house in the photos is a great box I got at the Dollar Store last year around Christmas time. They had them at Halloween as well I need to get one this year. Be sure to keep your eyes out for them as well. They make great mini doll storage!
