Camp Doll Diaries Make Camp Benches

Today’s craft is actually one I did for last week, but somehow it just never made it on to the schedule! I used simple craft sticks to make a camp bench that can be used by the fire or at your outdoor amphitheater for the Talent Show. Once you make one of the benches, you will see how quick and easy they are and you can make camp benches for all your campers. Keep in mind that this is inspiration and there are more ways to make the benches than you think. Don’t worry about being exact either.

Supplies needed to make camp benches:

  • Craft sticks or popsicle sticks
  • Hot glue (regular glue will work but will take longer to dry)
  • Scissors

Step 1 – Place your craft sticks side by side to make a base. Your base needs to be at least 3″ x 6″ and depending on the craft sticks you use, you may need more than four sticks for the base.

Step 2 – Cut another stick in half and cut off the rounded tips.

Step 3 – Hot glue the smaller support pieces across all four sticks for support. Please get adult help when using the hot glue gun.

Step 4 – Cut 4 more sticks in half on the diagonal. These will become the legs of the bench.

Step 5 – Glue the first leg up against your support piece so that it makes the first half of an X.

Step 6 – Glue a second leg up against the support piece to make the second half of the X and put a little extra glue where the two pieces cross over for strength.

Step 7 – Repeat steps 5 & 6 until you have four sets of bench legs in place.  I used the four leg approach to give the bench extra stability. Depending on the size of craft sticks you use, you may or may not need four.

Molly is ready to sit on the bench at the campfire. Now all she needs is some popcorn and a few of her friends! I made quite a few benches and we will be using them as front row seating at the Talent Show.

You will have to do a little adjusting to get your doll to sit just right on the bench, but it can be done!

If you wanted to get creative you could paint or decorate your benches as well. If you don’t have the craft sticks, look around the house – you can make benches out of boxes from your favorite snacks, cardboard, scrap wood or even sticks from the backyard (depending on the kind of trees in your area.)
