Camp Doll Diaries - How to Make a Campfire Play Set

Ruthie and Stacy have had a great week at camp and are ready for the campfire and marshmallow roasting tonight. Here are two ways you can make your own Campfire Play Set for your dolls using items you may already have at home.

To create today’s Camp Doll Diaries Craft you will need:

  • Small sticks or twigs from outdoors or you can also use Cinnamon Sticks
  • A toilet paper tube
  • Scissors
  • Glue (dots, craft glue, craft stick or glue gun)
  • Tape
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Paper towel, white pompoms, craft foam squares or white packing peanut for the marshmallows
  • Felt, fun foam or paper in the colors of red, orange and yellow
  • Chopsticks or a longer thin twig for the marshmallow roasting sticks
  • *Two hair elastics to help your dolls hold their sticks
  • *You may also wish to color your marshmallows to make them look toasted you can do so by using brown and black markers

Camp Doll Diaries - How to Make a Campfire Play Set

Campfire one

Step 1- Assemble your supplies and use your ruler to mark the half way measurement of your toilet paper tube.

Step 2- Cut your toilet paper tube at your mark. This will now be the base of campfire one.

Step 3- Cut flame shapes out of your colored paper. You can make them all the same size or cut them in different shapes and sizes as I did.

Step 4– Use your glue to start adding your paper flames to your toilet paper tube adding more glue as you go, you will need to press and hold into place if you are using white craft glue as I did. You can also tape your flames in place. As the toilet paper tube is open in the center you can also glue paper flames inside the tube for a more “full” look. Let your camp fire dry.

Campfire two

Step 1– Assemble all your supplies. I used a few twigs I found outside my house. If you are using cinnamon sticks you can also follow these directions. Snap your twigs into 4-5 inch pieces

Step 2– Cut a piece of cardboard 4 by 2 inches

Step 3– Cut out “flame shapes” from your felt

Step 4– Run a line of glue along the edge of your cardboard. Press the first twig into place.

Step 5– On the opposite side of the cardboard do the same thing as step 4 then add a line of glue over each twig and add a twig on top.

Step 6- Layer your felt as shown in the photo’s above adding a dab of glue between them to keep them in place.

Step 7– Add a line of glue on the inside edge of one of the twigs and press your felt flames in to place.

Step 8– Prepare more felt flames as you did in step 6 and add them to your fire as shown above gluing them in place while you go.

Step 9– Continue adding more twigs or cinnamon sticks until you have a full looking fire. Cover as much of the cardboard base as you can. Let it dry.

Marshmallow Roasting Sticks

Step 1– Assemble your supplies. You can use chopsticks or a longer twig for the roasting stick. Both work equally well. Separate your chopsticks.

Step 2– Cut 1 inch strips of paper towel to create your marshmallow. On the pointy end of your stick tape or glue one edge of your cut paper towel and roll it up as shown in the photos above. Secure the outside edge with a dab of glue and let it dry. Skip this step If you are using a fun foam block, packing peanut or pompom. See step 2 a.

Step 2 a– If you are using a pompom as your marshmallow add a dab of glue to the end of your stick or chopstick and place the pompom on top, let it dry.

If you are using a packing peanut or square fun foam block, push the end of the stick through the peanut or square, you can secure with a bit of glue.

If you would like to make your Marshmallows look toasted you can color the ends with a bit of brown and black marker.

Once everything is dry it is time to try out your new Campfire Play Set. Use hair elastics to get your dolls to hold their sticks.
