A true sign of summer when I was a kid, was all the neighborhood kids running around trying to catch fireflies after dark. Β Once you had caught them in what ever cup or jar you had on hand, you put a piece of fabric over the top so the fireflies could still breath and put the jar on your dresser or end of your bed so you could watch the fireflies continue to glow.

“It’s almost time for lights out,” said Kit.

“We have enough time to play a round of checkers,” replie Ruthie.

“Kit, have you seen my jar of fireflies? I thought I brought them in from our picnic earlier,” said Ruthie – halfway thinking out loud.

“Sure, here you go Ruthie, you just left them on my bottom bunk,” answered Kit as she leaned over to the bottom bunk and reappeared with a jar of bright yellow fireflies.

“Perfect!” said Ruthie!

To make the fireflies, I simply cut up a yellow pipe cleaner and placed a few of the pieces in Ruthie’s jar. I taped a few of the pieces to the side just to give it the look that the fireflies are flying around.
