American Girl GOTY 2010 Lanie Holland, Book Plots
So, we still don’t have any pictures And I finally tracked down the cover of the book (thanks to a super amazing reader) for Lanie, the American Girl of the Year (GOTY) for 2010, and we know the storylines from her books.

well,its seems cool,but does all she do is garden? then it would be pretty boring… i was hoping they would make one on global warming,divorce, or other things..but she still sounds really interesting.

oh and i think the gotywith divorced parents(2011? 2014?) should have a favorite song..that being “hey” by mitchel musso and she she should read the julie ag books & the dawn baby-sitters club books,so yeah,i really hope they make a new doll with a story like that. or one that wants to save animals(particularly whales,polar bears,igaunas and leopards & snow bears.) but would it be too much like kailey,then? probaly. oh well lol

They can only do so much before they start recycling ideas. Marisol was a good seller for them, and most of the target group wasn’t around for her, so i can see them doing another dancer in a few years.

i don’t like to collect, becuz i just like to buy the dolls,acessories,andoutfits i like,becuz why would you buy something u don’t want,ya kno? my cousin wantted everything in kaya’s collection so she made her mom(she’s so spoiled.) buy it all for her even though she does’nt even like mst of it.
i mean she wanted her whole collection,not like she actually likes it, she just wanted to have it.
I thought she was supossed to like the outdoors- as in camping. This girl sounds to much like Josefina.
Collecting doesn’t necessarily mean you buy dolls out of obligation to yourself. I bought the GOTY dolls and all of their outfits from 2006-2008. But then Chrissa came along. I wasn’t impressed. I could’ve just gotten her anyway for the sake of my collection, or I could’ve saved my money instead. I chose the latter.
And if she’s not Black, then l’ll be pretty annoyed at AG.
The camping deal was speculation on my part. To be honest, the Lanie book plots sound a little boring. But I’ll give AG a chance to impress me in January before I judge whether she’s worthy of my money!

The historical books are great. That’s how I got into American Girl.
Again, I think that was just the hopes of a few people on here. No evidence to prove anything yet.
I love Molly’s books. I read them over and over when I was little … Molly was my first historical doll and I got her story collection with the doll.

I must admit the book plots sound rather boring, but I’l wait and see. May buy her depending on what she looks like. I collect AG dolls and only get the ones I want. I saw Marisol with some accessories and stuff in perfect condition on craigslist for $150, but didn’t buy her because I don’t really like her that much. Same with Chrissa, I am not impressed by her. I don’t have Molly or Julie either because I’m not fans of them. I want Rebecca next!! Maybe Sonali, I don’t know though…can’t wait to see what Lanie looks like!!!

yes the books sound quite boring. :\ I don’t really understand how she teaches girls new things, or really anything about life execpt or gardens- which pretty much anybody can do… like Chrissa does. Well we will just have to wait and see.
So far she sounds incredibly boring to me. I just hope that the reason they are retiring # 21 is because Lanie’s hair will be short and curly.

I’m gonna go to see a Christmas Carol with my mom, my brother, my mom’s boyfriend and his son. Has anyone seen it yet? it looks good!! I am so exited for christmas! my mom got me a mini christmas tree and i put it up for my dolls. it looks uber cute!

Lanie might lack the normal family structure … that would be relevant and be something to supplement the whole backyard story. I’m interested to see where AG went with that.

I’ve been seeing Saba’s (Girls of Many Lands) picture everywhere when I look up GOTY 2010 on search websites, and she will be the new GOTY. I wonder why that is?
Also, to add to my comment above, I think that the books sound good, but why would the neighbor want to get rid of Lanie’s backyard? Are they joined, like without a fence in between, or something? I hope there’s a good motive for that.
My friend doesn’t have a fence, so Lanie might not have one either. I’ll probably get her anyway, GOTY dolls always cost more money on ebay after she retires.

Coolio! Her books sound a LITTLE boring, but I’ll give her a chance. IT’s funny because I know someone named Janie Holland LOL! I still think her hair with be braided, I don’t neccasarily (sorry for incorrect spelling!) mean a bunch of tiny braids, I mean even like two or four big ones. I don’t think it is stereotyping. I don’t think that if we give the African American girl braids, then people will be like: OMGoodness they think everyone who is African American of 2010 has braids! I think it will just be nice since it’s popular for 10 year old African American girls. Well, that’s my opinion and you guys have yours.
Madeline, 1 or 2 braids isn’t stereotyping, but more would be. There’s already stereotype of AA’s have a head of braids, and a doll with such would just be perpetuating such thoughts.

My gosh, who cares about stereotypes like that? Yeah, a ton of African Americans do have lots of little braids and just as many don’t … there’s nothing wrong with the doll going either way. It would be normal for an AA doll to have little braids too. Really, there’s no need to read so deeply into everything.
Personally, I don’t want a ton of little braids because it limits what you can do with the doll’s hair. And AG wouldn’t go to the trouble because braided wigs like that can get very expensive.
I obviously care about that stereotype.

For the life of me, I still can’t completely figure out Mia’s hairstyle. I’ve gotten it to be passable from a distance, but it’s so complicated! It’s pretty … and pretty impossible to replicate.

Loryn, I’ve seen Christmas Carol, it was very well done. I liked the ghosts, they all had their good and bad qualities. The CG was wonderful. And I loved how it stayed true to Dicken’s original book so much.

This eco-friendly doll is GREAT idea especially because of global warming, i think it’s great american girl is uses this doll to make a stand for the enviroment and to get girls involved, i bet the contest this year will have to do with helping your community out when it comes to the enviroment and nature! Lanie sounds so cute, I think it would be so cute if she was hawian sorry for my spelling.

Everybodys talking about how boring her books sound about her gardening but don’t you guys get it, this doll isnt just gardening shes being eco friendly she could teach great lessons, and losing a garden can be a big issue, because we need parks and nature, dont look at her as just a gardening doll, but an eco friendly doll whos helping the earth!

The thing is, some people don’t want to be eco friendly. Personally, I love the idea. I have Multiple Sclerosis and am on an organic diet instead of taking actual medication for it. And guess what? Its helping. But the thing is, most of the target group won’t see the underlying message there and just think its boring.

I wasn’t stating what I think or believe personally. It’s a fact that global warming is a hot button partisan issue. Hence, some people would get upset if American Girl addressed it in a product aimed at 8-12 year old girls.
I felt the same way when I saw my cousin’s Nicki doll. She said that she’s taken good care of the doll’s hair. It looked like she took a brush to the doll’s roots and yanked down. She probably did.
My neighbors nickis doll hair is crazy frizzy and so messed up, its so sad, because otherwise the doll is in great condition.

AG doesn’t actually stay away from politics, several of thier books teach that supporting wars makes for “good” citizens, so I don’t think global warming would be somenthing they would necessarily completely avoid. I wouldn’t be surprised if she is eco-friendly that they do touch lightly on global warming and the like.
Lani, I know you’re referring to the Revolutionary and American Civil wars. Those aren’t relevant to a certain political party *today*. The wars were about being treated fairly and nothing more. The revolutionary war wouldn’t offend anyone today, would it? They were teaching history, not political standpoints.
I would be very, very, very, very, very, very surprised to see a doll that touches on global warming.
If they want a doll to plant a garden and enjoy critters and camping, more power to them. I’m banking on a few pets.
I have an idea about why her neighbor would threaten to take down her garden. It must be a shared space, like she lives in an apartment or the projects or something. Community gardens are really big in large cities because it may be the only green that one gets with blocks and blocks of skyscrapers and sidewalks.
I hope that doesn’t mean that she will be an AA from the projects, though. That would be very stereotypical! Plus, AG got a lot of flack for making a homeless doll, then earlier because Marisol moved out of a bad neighborhood, so I don’t think they would go there again. There’s not a lot of accessories for a poor doll, either. If they ever make Rebecca’s cousin Ana, she would just have her green dress and school outfit and maybe one more. So I think they would go the richer route and have her from a nice apartment.
I just hope it’s an apartment away from New York. There’s been too many dolls from New York, no fair! Chicago, perhaps? Or Atlanta?

Lena – and everyone else – you would really like the Chrissa books. I read them with my daughter and they are very good. The issue of Gwen being homeless is handled in a very caring but honest way.
I’ve been idling about reading Chrissa, and thought about taking them to Poland to read (really small town. No books in English. At all) but on your recomendation, I will take them.
My daughter was hoping there would be a third or fourth story in her collection. The other series she loved were the books on Nicki and Jess.

My point was that it would not surprise me if they DO or DO NOT bring up global warming or the like, not that they will.
Lani, politics that happen in the past are no longer relevent. You won’t see many people today arguing about weather or not we shoudl be part of Britain or that AA’s shouldn’t vote. But there are many people today who don’t believe in global warming, and if Mattel presents such a doll, they’ll get a lot of complaints.

If politics from the past are no longer relevant than why do you want an AA Goty so badly, any girl of color could do for diversity, but most people want to see an AA Goty because it only seems fair, largely due to past American politics.
You can keep acting like things in the past do not matter but they do and even if they say that Lanie is only concerned about conserving the planet or ecology, well why is that? Global warming, emissions, toxins in water and food, the ozone layer, so that whole issue is intertwined even if they present it with reusable shopping bags, bicycling instead of driving, farmers markets/gardens, etc.
I was just looking at Molly’s collection a minute ago and I noticed something strange. Molly’s school lunch set has a METAL lunch box. Girls in her time shouldn’t of had those kind, because I read in the Welcome to Molly’s World book that they had to give up metal for the army. I saw in the older lunch set she had a paper bag, so why did they change it?
I want an AA girl, but any girl of color will make me happy. What I don’t want is another white girl. The politics of the past do matter, but as we know which side won, Mattel can make a doll from that perspective. We don’t know who’s right about GW.
If you pay no attention to history, it will repeat itself. I’ve know a ressesion was comming for years. Why? I could see the same patterns that lead to the Great Deppression happening now. So don’t say I don’t care about history.
Like I said, eco friendly is one thing, but full on saying its because of global warming would get a lot of people angry.
Madeline, Molly had her sister’s old pre-war lunch box. if it was still good, they wouldn’t have just given it up. Same with her bicycle. If a family had a good bicycle, they wouldn’t give it up, especially when gas was rationed. As to why the change, the original set had 10 paper bags. Imaging how many they’d have to make to fill all the orders and replacements. It was easier to make a metal lunch box that would last.
well, I am always really excited for the GOTY. I was a little disappointed with Chrissa, but I really like Sonali. I think Lanie sounds interesting, and I think it would be cool if it was one of those community gardens, and Lanie lives in, like Greenwich Village in NYC or something. That would be cool!

The politics from the Revolutionary and Civil war eras are no longer relevant. The lessons learned from those wars are. *Lessons* are what need to be remembered. History really does repeat itself.
Case in point, American Girl handles every single topic they address in their books with upmost sensitivity because they cannot afford to upset people. Lawsuits, lawsuits, lawsuits. Sales are *always* a priority and they would never jeopardize that.

Lily, I don’t consider discussing to be squabbling, I enjoy having somewhat intelligent conversations. I’m home alone most of the time. I like being able to computer chat with you and Lena.
I’m not trying to be arguementative, I simply take a different stand on this matter. I think some of the confusion is that you still think I’m referring to the Civil and Revolutionary wars, I’m not.
I completely understand PR nightmares for AG, but the fact of the matter is that no matter what doll they introduce, someone, somewhere will be upset over subject matter or appearance. The “homeless” Gwen doll for instance.

I open my presents Christmas Eve too. Its a Polish family tradition, like Thanksgiving, with a 12 course meal (1 for each month), caroling, breaking little wafers and wishing good luck, and presents. And then we all go to mass before midnight and when it come, we all yell something like “the blessed one is born!”. Its hard to translate directly.

Because they had nothing better to do. Actually, if you look closley, its just another article complaining about AGs price. These are the same people who bought Wiis for 500$. I definatly see the logic in that (sarcasm)

The funny thing is, everyone was mad that Mattel wasn’t donating Gwen money to homeless shelters. Mattel reply? “Oh, we’ve been donating for years. We just saw no need to make it public.” That’s how it should be.

I have Irish, Scottich, and a little bit of Native-American Indian in me, but we don’t celebrate different holidays or do special traditions that have to do with that. I think that would be cool too, though. My friends are Christian-Jewish and we go to their house on Hannukah and it’s really fun.

Oh! We open presents from friends and other realatives on Christmas Eve too. We open the presents from “Santa Claus” on Christmas Day though (I have a little brother lol so yes, there is a santa in my house still). I asked for Sonali so hopefully I get her! =)

Kit changed a lot when her movie came out! her freckles skin tone and even hair. My sister has the original kit and my neighbor has the new one!
Kit changed earlier than that. I got mine in 2002, I think, and my neighbor in 2004. Hers has longer hair and darker freckles.

Oh, I just can’t wait to see Lanie! I am very surprised we don’t have any more information on her at all. I guess she won’t have a movie. That’s the reason we saw Chris (Chrissa) so early. Still, it’s odd to me we still have NO idea at all what she looks like. The author’s other books don’t really mean anything. Mia was thought to be Asian, because of her author’s other books and heritage. But look what Mia turned out to be. An opposite. I still hope though, that she will be African American. I think I am going to look in buying her. THAT IS, after I see her. Then if I don’t want her as much, I can use my saved money to buy another doll, or just save more money.

I agree, Linda Marie. It would be really strange and not a good idea if AG released another girl right after Rebecca a doll that looked a lot like her. And besides, this is a figure of MY opinion, but based on the book plots and name, the Rebecca doll does NOT sound like one that would fit this character, No offense.
And I also agree with ellie, because no body should be angry if she isn’t African American. I mean, she’ll be great anyway, and people shouldn’t judge by how you look, it’s the personality that counts. I totally understand wanting her to be African American, because that’s how I feel, so does Lena, pioneerfan04, and some other people. (NO, I don’t need any comments back saying, “I am not judging the doll cause I wanna her to be African!!!) So, let’s just put a stop to whatever squabble there will be brewing and carry on with peace.
And LOL, girls, I have got to tell you guys about a dream I had about a month ago, I forgot to tell you.
It was like September or something in the dream, and people had very few information on GOTY 2010. BUT, there was apparently a mix-up with the September catalouge and the one for Jan. 2010, and my friend Meghan got the one for January on accident. Well, she apparently was the only one in the world who got this magazine, so I RACED up to her playroom, and when I flipped to the Girl Of The Year page, it was soooo dissapointing. ALL THE DOLL WAS WHAT THEY DID WAS JUST GOT A JLY DOLL AND GAVE HER A NEW NAME. IT WAS JLY 18, AND ALL THEY DID WAS GIVE HER A NEW NAME AND SAID, “OK THIS IS THE NEW GOTY DOLL 2010 GIRLS, HAPPY? And her accessories were worse. What they were were they were the same exact things as some JLY products but just they renamed it. Like they retired the scooter or whatever from the JLY line and gave it to GOTY, the exact same one, and called it, “Lanie’s Scooter”. And there was nothing new, not a movie or friend dolls or new products or anything! And scary enough, she had NO books. And her name was, “Girl of the Year 2010″, Not Katie or Lily or Lanie or any girl name. It was the nightmare for all AG fans, guys. I shudder to think about it.
And sorry, her name wasn’t Lanie in the dream, so it was “GOTY’s scooter” My bad.
And last thing, yes, she WAS African American, but she had no hairstyle and she was quite boring considering the outfit and hair.
I’d really like to see January catalogue,but I guess I like being suprised

Madeline, if you look closely in the books, Molly has brown eyes. I assume the doll was given gray to make her different from Sam, but in my 2007 copies of the books, Molly’s eyes are brown.

I’m a little disappointed with the My Twinn drawing. As it turns out, an adult collector won. I was really rooting for the little girls whose parents could never afford a doll like that for them.
Sometimes adult collectors cherish things and take care of things better that little girls do, so don’t be disappointed. Maybe she has kids of her own that would like the doll too.

Funny story. I’m on a yahoo group for My Twinn dolls and the person who won it announced that she won a free custom doll. From there, it was just a matter of asking her if it was the doll diaries drawing. I’ve been emailing her and she’s actually a really nice person.

I really do hope there’s a puzzle (but no spoiler). As neat as it is to see the new dolls ahead of time, it’s a lot more fun to see a brand new doll’s entire collection at once instead of bits and pieces of information spread out over months.
Back to homework. This week has been awful and I can’t wait for Christmas break (1.5 more weeks!) I failed two quizzes today (oops!) and I have a test tomorrow, a test Thursday, a quiz Thursday, and another test Friday.

We get out on Dec.18, which is a half day, and Dec. 17 is our big Christmas play (which, I do have a great part in, not to brag). Dec. 16, we go to the JAARS center. We are doing a Christmas party with the retired missionary seniors, so it’ll be fun and we’ll eat with them and do games and stuff and share the true meaning of Christmas, etc. So next week is a big fun Christmas week. Yeah.
For Christmas, I am asking for a Computerized Brothers Sewing Machine with Embroidery. I saw it at Costco, and it is #1 on my Wish List. I want to sew all during the week, not just on Tuesdays, when I go to my (sewing) teacher’s house.
I am also asking for AG stuff, not a doll, but stuff like Chris’s Craft Studio (My doll can “sew” with me LOL!) and my favorite outfit that I want is Ivy’s New Year dress for my Chinese-American girl Eva Grace.
Then I want books, especially Elsie books. Also for the doll, Elsie’s Blue Coat with the muff and hat. Have a great CHRISTMAS!

I took Kirsten’s braids out, but I am good with hair and can easily put the back. And I always have some water at the ready when i play with doll hair. But her hair is beautiful, and I’d definatly recomend taking it out if you can put it back in.
I like Chrissa’s story, but the doll herself is kinda blah.
AG likley won’t get other orders in at this time of year, so close to Chrissa’s retirement.
Megan, if you tell your friends, they will likley accept you for who you are. I still can’t tell right from left, and my friend mocks me about it, but I can tell he’s just doing it playfuly and really does care about me.
And I’m sorry, but e-petitions don’t work, and nothing will stop AG from archiving. I’ve actually been hearing rumors that Sam, Kirsten will return for the 25th aniversary (2011)
Hi, Megan! I’m sorry about you being bullied at school. That’s never fun. Speaking of which, you’ve been on all day but it’s a Thursday during the school week . . . ? At any rate, I’m glad to be home since I had two tests and two quizzes today.
Unfortunately, Kirsten will not come back in the near future. Instead, there will probably be two new historical dolls next year. As much as I like Kirsten, I’m excited to see the new dolls.
