A Life of Faith Dolls

There has been quite a bit of discussion in the comments section on other Doll Diaries posts about a line of dolls called A Life of Faith. The Life of Faith collection consists of five different 18″ dolls based on characters/stories from the 1800s with a faith based/religious belief system. Each doll has a series of books, a wardrobe and accessories.

One of our contributors, Lena, sent in photos of two of her Life of Faith dolls, Elsie and Laylie.

  2. Lily on June 8th, 2009 10:07 am

Not quite sure why anyone would spend $180 to get one off of Amazon . . .

  3. Anne on June 8th, 2009 10:13 am

Laylie is so pretty…but I agree w/ Holly.

  4. Lena on June 8th, 2009 10:18 am

Wow, I took some bad photos of them last night. Elsie’s eyes are really pretty, no buggy and creepy like they are in the second picture.

  5. Starr on June 8th, 2009 10:19 am

    I like Elsie’s dress!

  6. Lena on June 8th, 2009 10:22 am

Those dresses are very pretty. Elsie has two petticoats under there, that she came with. The green ruffles on the bottom on her dress are seperate and then she has a petticoat/underwaist too.

  7. sarah on June 8th, 2009 12:45 pm

hehehe, yes elsie looks a bit creepy in the photo, but I’ve seen them in person and they are really cute. There clothes are pretty, I’d say my fav doll is millie out of all of them.

  8. sallie on June 8th, 2009 1:27 pm

my favorite doll out of them is violet, ’cause she looks most like me. what color are her eyes? if they’re green, blue, or green/and/blue than that is my twin. speaking of twins, i have two more cousins! madeline
kay and gabrielle paige. so sweet. and look!!! mrgreen twins!!!

i wish i had a twin instead of a little sister.
so i was on you tube with my friend and we did american girl doll video
s, not sure if you want to hear what i saw, but if you do search evil doll that bites there’s a mouth click on it and look at related videos.
if you saw halloween II and you didn’t like that freaky eyeless dude guy than DO NOT DO THIS. you have been warned.

  9. Lena on June 8th, 2009 1:53 pm

  13. AG&FAN on June 8th, 2009 6:13 pm

CUTE!!! Dresses look like if they’re from victorian era, well, actually,I think they’re fancier,so it might be from long ago…(I’m not really into Life of Faith so I don’t know about it very well_

  14. SG on June 8th, 2009 8:15 pm

I have 3 ALOF dolls and I love them and their books. They are very pretty, high quality dolls and amazingly good books. I would recomend them to everyone!!!

  15. kylie on June 8th, 2009 8:25 pm

    i have violet!

  16. balletlvr425 on June 8th, 2009 8:49 pm

I LOVE My alof dolls! I have Millie,Elsie,Violet, and Kathleen. They are a great addition to my colllection of dolls! But they are much better quality in my opinion than ag dolls. And they are SO lifelike! They’re dresses are gorgeous.

But Elsie is from the civil war
Violet is elsie’s daughter……(when elsie grows up of course) and she’s after the civil war

Millie is elsie’s cousin, and her stories take place before the civil war

    Laylie was Millie’s temporary slave.

Kathleen was more in the great depression time. But shes notrelated to any other of the dolls.

Also they’re books are great! I love them. I think either Elsie or Kathleen is my fav doll…..but I LOVE millie’s books!

I could talk all day about my alof dolls! I love them so much and want to eventually get Laylie!

  17. balletlvr425 on June 8th, 2009 8:50 pm

go the alof.com to see their whole collection

  18. Lena on June 8th, 2009 9:00 pm

Actually, Elsie’s Antebellum, before the civil war. Violet is a real Victorian (unlike Sam), Kathleen’s great depression, and Millie’s 1830’s, as is Laylie.

  19. Caitlin on June 8th, 2009 9:44 pm

They are very pretty, but their dresses look a little too childlish and not terribly relative to their time periods….just too big and fluffy for me I guess!! I like Violet best, although Elsie is very pretty as well. I personally think Millie’s hair is too long!!! While I like Violet, I didn’t like many of her clothes. I just didn’t like the designs and colors used, and they were so expensive!! And no offense, but I found her “fancy walking outfit” or something like that atrocious!! The colors were awful. I think if they did it in better colors it would actually be pretty, but the colors were just horrenduous!!

Kathleen is very cute though, and I love her dress. The angle the promotional picture is taken at makes her look very baby-faced and adorable!!!

  20. Georgia on June 9th, 2009 2:23 am

I don’t have the doll but i love Millie’s books. I read the first one and then my dad bought me the next eight and i was finished within about a month!

  21. SG on June 9th, 2009 10:30 am

    Hey Caitlin!

What you were saying about the doll dresses, actually they patterned all their dresses off of real dresses from the time period they are from. Bright, bold, “wild” colors were “in” during the early Victorian years before they turned to more pale, subdued colors on toward the 1900’s. Ladies from aprox. 1840’s to late 1890’s wore hoopskirts, that is probably why the doll dresses are so poofy, much easier than making doll sized hoopskirts! And, in real life, their dresses aren’t as fluffy as the pictures make it look.

I have Elsie, Violet and Millie, and one thing I really like is that unlike AG, they have sculpted vinal bodies. Which makes their clothing fit better and they look more like 12-on up year olds instead of the boxy shape of AG dolls. Don’t get me wrong, I love AG too, I have mini Felicity and Sam, (My favorite!) but ALOF dolls are much higher quality, and their books are entertaining, enriching and enjoyable for older girls in my opinion. If you love AG, but want something slightly more advanced, look up A Life of Faith books.

  22. priscilla on June 9th, 2009 10:45 pm

    i have kathleen,i love her!

  23. priscilla on June 9th, 2009 10:46 pm

they used to be made from another company.

  24. balletlvr425 on June 10th, 2009 9:59 am

    Hey Lena,
In Elsie’s books…..they take place before, during, and after the civil war. I know..I’ve only read the series about 5 times.

  25. Lena on June 10th, 2009 10:24 am

Yes, but they begin Antebellum, and she grows up Antebellum. You’re not the only one who’s read the series five times.

They used to be made by Breezy Point Treasures. Elise, Millie, and Violet’s neck stamp says it.

  26. Holly on June 10th, 2009 11:35 am

ive never read the series. just seen the dolls. r the books good?

  27. Lena on June 10th, 2009 11:45 am

Yes, they are very good. I definetly recoment them.

  28. Lena on June 10th, 2009 11:45 am

    *recomend*

  29. pioneerfan04 on June 10th, 2009 6:38 pm

i love how they somehow connect the 4 dolls from the 1800s– Laylie is Millie’s old slave, Millie is Elsie’s cousin, and Elsie is Violet’s mother. The only one that duznt cnnct is Kathleen. :( . i cain’t wait to get me my millie! haha lol country style jk!

  30. chrysanthamum on June 10th, 2009 7:48 pm

    they look so pretty.

  31. Lena on June 10th, 2009 8:15 pm

Pioneerfan, Kathleen’s grandma knew Elsie’s aunt Wealthy. So they do kinda connect.

  32. priscilla on June 10th, 2009 8:21 pm

do you think i should get laylie or elsie?

  33. priscilla on June 10th, 2009 8:30 pm

were elsie’s books originally longer and written by martha finley? because i have two elsie books called elsie dinsmore and elsie’s girlhood that aren’t available now.

  34. Lena on June 11th, 2009 7:56 am

They were still written by miss Finley, just heavily edited. because the originals had some bad stuff in there.

I say get Laylie, because her story is so sweet.

  35. Selena on June 11th, 2009 10:37 am

the old Elsie books are still good.. and they aren’t some thing everyone can read, you have to be able to understand it. They’re making books way to easy these days…

    ok, so anywho,

    1. sorry I haven’t been on!! swim team every day, then mother’s helper from 8 to 10 this morning and nxt week…

    2. where are we?? here??

  36. priscilla on June 11th, 2009 12:42 pm

selena,we are commenting here,on the rebecca lena’s pictures post, and all the new posts. lena, there is no bad stuff in the original books…

  37. priscilla on June 11th, 2009 12:55 pm

just to let you know,i won’t be on for a few days.

  38. Lena on June 11th, 2009 5:42 pm

Priscilla, the original books had their daughter/father relation ship be… weird. And there was plenty of anti-any thing that wasn’t presbyterian. The new books are toned down.

  39. Selena on June 11th, 2009 7:32 pm

oh ya, i 4got on Tues. I sprained my ankle. :( It hurts REALLY bad. And I have to do a 2 hr. swim team practice every day =( poor me, right?? *rolls eyes*

  40. Lena on June 11th, 2009 7:48 pm

Aww, poor Selena! I hope it gets better!

  41. balletlvr425 on June 12th, 2009 3:08 pm

wow lena……I was just making a comment. no need to get so upset.

  42. Lena on June 12th, 2009 4:21 pm

I’m sorry if I came off as mean, I didn’t mean to. But Elsie is Antebellum, I was correcting you on that.

  46. chrysanthamum on June 12th, 2009 7:12 pm

    what is antebellum?

  47. Lena on June 12th, 2009 7:21 pm

Porsper. Please, if you’re going to be quoting Spock, take the time to spell it… logicaly.

Antebellum: Ante = before, Bellum = war

Antebellum means before war, or before the civil war.

    Thank you Latin class.

  48. Lena on June 12th, 2009 7:22 pm

    *logically*

  49. balletlvr425 on June 12th, 2009 7:58 pm

  50. Selena on June 12th, 2009 10:11 pm

  51. Lena on June 13th, 2009 6:30 am

It means “fools laught at Latin language” (loosely translated)

  52. balletlvr425 on June 13th, 2009 8:38 am

    yep………what lena said

    Haha Selena

  53. balletlvr425 on June 13th, 2009 9:30 pm

I like latin because it is the base of most languages……so if you know latin words….a lot of the time you can figure out words other languages

  54. Lena on June 14th, 2009 7:14 am

Actually, not all European languages are based on Latin. Only Romani, Spanish, Portugese, Italian, and French are, and some English words are based on it.

Other languages were made by “uncivilized” tribes such as the Germans and the Slovaks (which make up what is now Czech, Poland, Ukrain, Russia, and all the counties in between)

You are right though…. I find myself often thinking about some English words, like insomnia, and giggling that I know where they came from, the Latin word somnus. Also, I noticed it helps me understand the many Spanish that live in my neighborhood, and is helping me much in learning Italian.

BTW I wasn’t trying to insult Germans and Slovaks, I just meant that’s how the Romans saw them, as uncivilized. I myself am Polish, and actually speak the language.

I only started this year, but my lesson’s are like this: they tell me some random trivia (like what languages are Romance languages) then my actual lesson (declensions, endings) then I do the lesson’s work. I get vocab every few lessons.

  64. Lena on June 15th, 2009 3:51 pm

These dolls are really cute… my friend has elsie, violet, and i think millie… the prices are pretty comparable to american girl, and the stuff seems to be quality.
